Origin of Internet

• In 1962, J C R Licklider of Massachusetts Institute of Technology envisioned about internet, a concept that was termed as “Galactic Network”.

• By 1968 along with the help of Lawrence Robert 1st functional Internet Network was invented.

Internet in India

• Internet hit India in the late 1980’s although it was deemed only for researchers & scientists.

• In August 1995, VSNL introduced commercial Internet access in India.

• After which numerous ISP ( Internet Service Providers) entered the market like Mantra Online, DSL, Satyam, Hathway, MTNL, etc…

Some Do’s & Don’t for safe browsing

Do’s • Always have an anti-virus software installed on your computer. ( AVG & Avast)• Always update your anti-virus software regularly• Always supplement your security system with a firewall, anti-adware, anti-spyware and

malware programs. • Whenever making any password for your emails or online account create a password

consisting alpha-numeric characters and should be easy to remember. Also make a note of it and keep it personal with you.

• Change your passwords atleast once in 3 months.• Always use internet as a tool and not as a weapon.• Always update yourself with new internet services provided by various banks,

institutions and Government as it will make life simpler.• Always create 2 email id’s.• Always have a unique folder for internet data downloaded created on your Hard-Disk

on another drive or partition where windows is not installed.• Clear your internet temporary files to avoid pile of temporary junk files slowing down

your system and occupying unnecessary space.

Don’t• Never share any personal information with anyone anonymous online.• Never share your passwords.• Never open any email attachment from the user you are not aware of.• Never open any attachment without scanning. (as 65 % of the viruses are

spread through email attachments)• Never share your credit card number with anyone unless its an authentic

source• Never click on a link in an email to take you to a website and enter

personal details either in the email or website• Incase of any online transaction with a credit card always look for a secure

digital certificate presented by a particular website. (e.g. Secure Socket Layer SSL)

• Don’t keep the net connection on when not required for a longer time.• Never post or upload any personal content or photographs • Never upload any of your friends photographs or content without their

consent• Never download any files showing un appropriate file formats as they will

usually be infected with virus

Health Issues by using internet on computer for prolonged time

• Addictiveness and confiding yourself to a virtual world.• Lack of physical activity.• Lack of social interaction.• Loss of emotions and expression• Electrical field radiation (E field)• Magnetic field radiation (H field) • Cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) / repetitive Strain injury –

i. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - This disorder occurs when the nerves that run through the wrist joint, get trapped by the inflamed tendons around them. You get feeling of numbness, loss of sensation or needles pricking.

ii. Tendonitis - inflammation of the tendon like the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Usually occurs in the wrist and forearms.

iii. Computer Vision Syndrome

iv. Adverse Mechanical Syndrome (AMS) - disorder occurs where the nerves that run down the arm become contracted and possibly compressed. Its the result of muscle spasms in the shoulders and elsewhere

Stress free Internet Browsing on Computer

• Always opt for right chair and table for the computer.• Avoid placing the monitor opposite a window to avoid

glare.• Select right choice of keyboard for prolonged typing.

(Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboards)• Always have a palm rest • Maintain an upright posture• Take breaks at regular intervals and look out of your

window and take a fresh breath• Keep your computer as well as surrounding area clean

to keep you lively

Always maintain a distance of 60 – 80 cms from the computer monitorAlways adjust the brightness and contrast of your monitor according to your convenience and the nature of work you do on the computer. E.g. for data related work keep the brightness low where as for graphical work keep the contrast and brightness level moderate or higher for less eyestrain while working over the minute details.Always calibrate your monitor and printer color profiles for accurate color production output.
