watch GUIDEWATCH GUIDEaRtIStIc DIaLS
This month’s guide is all about the dial. From the art of enameling, hand guilloche, gem-setting or painting, the technique and craftsmanship behind the elegant dial reminds us that some of the most beautiful timepieces, even today, are completed painstakingly by hand. We invite you to take a look at the next few pages, featuring a variety of timepieces and their extrordinary dials. These are true works of art.
LOUIs VUITTON EsCALE WORLDTImE
An automatic LV 106 caliber developed and assembled by the La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton manufacture powers this piece with functions that include a world time with disc display. The 41mm case is featured in white gold and the dial’s city disc is hand painted by craftsman from the manufacture.
TE8 méTIERs D’ART II
PICCADILLY PRINCEss ROYAL COLORs
The pocket watches made by John Arnold for King George III inspired this timepiece. It is a limited edition of eight pieces. Each watch is hand engraved by the brand’s master engraver. The pattern is composed of complex geometrical elements giving a three-dimensional effect.
This ladies’ cocktail watch is bedecked with a variety of stones reflecting the colors of the rainbow. In gold, the watch comes to life when 225 stones, 66 different color diamonds with ten different cuts, are hand set on the dial, case and bracelet. No two examples of this timepiece are alike. The watch is powered by a quartz movement displaying the hours and minutes.

This timepiece celebrates the film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II,” in which michelle Yeoh stars. The visual scene depicted is of a tiger and dragon clutching the tourbillon movement. The figures are carved in red gold entirely by hand, hand-finished, and micro painted. This is a limited edition of 20 pieces.

An example of the art of marquetry, which uses wooden mosaic techniques, this 42mm platinum watch represents a Cuban musician plucking the strings of his guitar. The colors represent the flag of Cuba and the guitar has an open sound hole to reveal a tourbillon.

ASK THE EXPERTASK THE EXPERT
PROFESSIONALAdviceThere are just about as many ways to define
one’s watch collection as there are collectors. But even the most seasoned among us can use a little advice now and then. We’ve asked high-profile individuals in the watch world how they would advise the avid collector in the process of building a watch collection. Here are their responses.
Xavier Nolot CEO Of AudEmARS PIguET NORTH AmERICA
SebaStieN

CarloS roSillo CO-fOuNdER Of BELL & ROSS
The best advice I can give is to travel to Switzerland to visit our factory or any other factory of the brands you are interested in because there is no better way to feel what it is about – this is the real thing. my advice would be document, read, learn and travel—and talk to us.“
I always pay attention to uniqueness of a product and uniqueness means to have something technically and aesthetically unique, where the product was really thought through… I think a product keeps its value if both aspects are fulfilled. I personally would avoid mass products.“
Choose selectively. Probably go for limited editions and the more limited it is the better. The quest of every collector is to have a unique watch…“

Kari voutilaiNeN fOuNdER Of vOuTILAINEN HORLOgERIE d’ART
I am not a collector as such, but I like watches and I have a few watches. When you buy something, you should buy it for yourself and buy what you like… Then I think it is best to educate—to read on the internet, in magazines and old books—to get more information. The more we know, the more we are able to pick out the collection.“
“
JulieN SChaerer mANAgINg dIRECTOR Of ANTIquORum gENEvA
I would recommend to anyone, whether it is for a $500 or a $500,000 watch, to not be afraid to do your bidding. Just know the exact commission rates and how much you have to pay in the end. It is a great tool to be able to look at a lot of pieces and get a great overview of what is out there.“
“FraNCoiS-Paul fOuNdER Of f.P. JOuRNE
my advice is to choose a piece that you like the most and for which you have the most affection. Preferably it is not a too-expensive piece so you can try it, wear it, be convinced, be comfortable and then come back for more complicated pieces.““
JourNe
miChele SoFiSti CEO Of guCCI TImEPIECES & JEWELRY
It is very difficult because the watch must match your personality somehow, and I think it is the same for everybody—for ladies or men. It doesn’t change.““
JeaN-Claude biver CHAIRmAN Of LvmH WATCHES
Buy what you like and buy what you can afford, because all the rest is speculation. Buy with your eyes, your heart and your money.““
hamdi Chatti vICE PRESIdENT Of WATCHES & JEWELRY LOuIS vuITTON
Like with everything you buy, you need first to like it and like to wear it often. I think you need as well to intrigue your friends.““
viNCeNt duPoNtreue fOuNdER Of BREvA
thierry CaSiaS CREATIvE dIRECTOR Of BuLOvA
It depends on the collector… If you are open-minded and interested in new watches, I would probably try to have one of each complication in a display you like. If we are talking about minute repeaters or tourbillons or whatever, there are a lot of choices on the market.“
I think that when it comes to collecting, the monetary value shouldn’t be as important as the emotional value. If the piece speaks to you and really appeals to you on an emotional level, I think that is most important.“
“
“maNuel emCh CEO Of ROmAIN JEROmE
I think that in the end what is most important is to collect what you feel emotionally connected to and whatever pleases you. don’t collect by thinking, collect with the heart and not with the brain.““
GeorGeS-heNri meylaN mELB HOLdINg (HAuTLENCE ANd H. mOSER)
I collect a few things, but only because I have, how we say in french is “cœur,” because in your heart you like this. I like old cars, I like old watches – I am not a big collector – but I have a few old watches that are very special things coming from the region where I was born, and some of them have the same name as my family name.“
