Why Hofstra?Hofstra University has a long tradition of welcoming international students to its campus. International students attending Hofstra enjoy all the benefits of the American system of higher education in a selective, private, campus community that values diversity and promotes cross-cultural understanding.

We currently enroll international undergraduate students from 50 different countries. Located on Long Island, New York, Hofstra offers students easy access to the cultural center of the world — New York City. Students benefit from the wide array of internship opportunities in New York City and take advantage of the many museums, Broadway shows, concerts, etc. Hofstra’s suburban campus is easily accessible, near two major airports (John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia International Airports) with abundant public transportation.

What does a liberal arts education mean to me?

Office of Multicultural & International Student Programs The mission of the Office of Multicultural & International Student Programs is to contribute to the development of a multicultural and globally aware campus community by supporting, celebrating, and guiding the international and multicultural student communities at Hofstra. Furthermore, the office provides educational programs for the larger campus community on a variety of cultural, global, and social justice issues.

The Office of Multicultural & International Student Programs sponsors a variety of events and offers many services, including:

v International Student Orientation.v Immigration-related programs that provide an overview of optional and curricular practical

training.v Visits to local museums and New York City attractions.v Programs geared toward international student life and success, such as “Adjusting to Life in

the United States” and “Academic Success in American Higher Education.”v Hofstra Career Center events, which help prepare international students to find employment

after they graduate. These events include “Workplace Culture in the USA” and “Applying for an H1B Visa.”

v International Education Week, which highlights Hofstra’s international student community.

Academics Hofstra University offers more than 140 undergraduate program options through the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; Frank G. HOFSTRA COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES (HCLAS) is organized into four divisions – the Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathmatics, Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Programs. All Hofstra students choose from a variety of liberal arts core classes, each designed to complement their program of study. Students may also choose to add a minor or a second major. The FRANK G. ZARB SCHOOL OF BUSINESS is one of only 10 percent of business schools in the United States with dual accreditation for its programs in business and accounting from AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Students gain hands-on experience at the Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, where they have access to the same data, analytics and software used by finance professionals. The LAWRENCE HERBERT SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION boasts one of the largest noncommercial broadcast studios in the northeastern United States, as well as the Hofstra NewsHub, our converged newsroom and multimedia classroom.

The SCHOOL OF EDUCATION emphasizes programs for students whose goals include teaching, administrative policy, and fitness training. This school utilizes Hagedorn Hall, one of the most technologically advanced classroom buildings in the United States, housing a distance learning lab, flexible classroom spaces, a dedicated advisement office, and a doctoral dissertation study room. The SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE combines and expands the Engineering and Computer Science departments to develop a curriculum that emphasizes high-tech research, practical work experience and interdisciplinary study, integrating resources and faculty from other parts of the institution, including the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and the Frank G. The SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES AND HUMAN SERVICES brings together the fields of rehabilitation, counseling and therapy, physician assistant studies, speech-language pathology, audiology, public health and health management. Campus LifeHofstra has a vibrant campus — with hundreds of cultural and social events, 200 student clubs and organizations, and a competitive NCAA Division I athletic program. Housing & DiningHousing is available for international students. Hofstra has 37 residence halls, featuring many different living arrangements. Twelve-month housing is available for students who will stay in the United States during the semester breaks. Hofstra’s campus is located in Hempstead, New York, in a suburban neighborhood. On a clear day, you can see the New York City skyline from the top floor of our library. The climate of Long Island is affected by four seasonal changes. The temperature varies from a high of 32 degrees Celsius during July and August to a low of minus 2 degrees Celsius in January and February. Take a virtual tour or schedule a campus visit at hofstra.edu/visit. We recommend campus visits during the September or January semesters so that you may experience our campus while classes are in session. English Language Program Students who meet Hofstra University’s admission requirements but have not demonstrated English language proficiency may be invited to enroll in the English Language Program (ELP). Sessions are offered in the summer and fall. Upon successful completion of ELP course work and demonstration of English proficiency, students transition to a degree-granting program at Hofstra University.

Hofstra University offers two levels of ELP courses, Beginner (available in the summer) and Advanced (available summer and fall).

Once they have successfully demonstrated English language proficiency, students are considered fully matriculated. There is no other requirement for full admission and no need for the student to file a separate application for admission to the University. Students who successfully complete the Advanced Level may, upon the recommendation of the ELP director, enroll in additional upper level classes, but they are not required to do so as a condition of their continued status as fully matriculated students. Admission Hofstra University is a selective institution. However, there is no minimum score or grade point average to be considered for admission. Hofstra’s admission committee reviews applications individually and places additional emphasis on the applicant’s essay and letter of recommendation.

To demonstrate English proficiency, the SAT, ACT, TOEFL or IELTS may be submitted. The SAT or ACT are not required for admission, but must be submitted to be considered for an academic scholarship. Native speakers of English must submit the SAT or ACT. Our fall 2013 applicants’ scores reflected the following:

Please note that Hofstra awards credit for A-level, Abitur, the IB Diploma, AP credits, etc. Advanced standing and collegiate-level credits may be awarded based on students’ performance on these exams and certain other upper-secondary school certificates. Students should send score reports to the Office of Admission for evaluation. An official evaluation of a student’s secondary record is often helpful in this process and can be provided by organizations such as World Education Services (WES, wes.org).

What financial aid might an international student receive?

International students are eligible for academic merit scholarships. Please note that an SAT or ACT score must be received to be considered for an academic scholarship. Need-based aid is not available for international students.

Ready to apply?Hofstra accepts international applications through our website — hofstra.edu — or through the Common Application (commonapp.org). The following checklist will help ensure that all the necessary items are completed and/or submitted:
