Objectives
To contribute to human capacity building and strengthening of academic
teaching and research in tropical and subtropical countries by providing the
opportunity to acquire the “Dr. sc. agr.” degree (Ph.D.).
The specific objectives are to train outstanding persons from Africa, Asia and
Latin America in research, academic teaching, international policy and in
institutional management and to prepare them for leading positions in their
home countries.
The management objectives of the programme are as follows:
a) Excellent performance and personality of PhD students
Selection of best candidates with excellent level of Master degree
very high proficiency in English language
Outstanding personalities with reference letter of Alumni
Experiences in employment at home
b) Efficient supervision
Organized and structured programme at the University of Hohenheim to
insure proper handling and supervision
PhD thesis work and examination restricted to maximum of 36 month
Supervisor will visit PhD student during his home leave and data
collection
Cooperation with local institution and local supervision
c) Excellency in reasearch work, discussions and publications
Team work on similar topics especially mixed with European PhD
students
Ttraining for preparation of posters and presentations and in scientific
writing
Participation in workshops, symposia and conferences
Target Groups
Primarily lecturers and researchers from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Preference is given to agricultural economists, but related disciplines may
also be considered.
Since 1991 a total of 95 PhD students with DAAD
scholarship have participated thereof 82 have finished
up to January 2012 and 13 are in the ongoing
programme

The structure of the international PhD programme
Resources and facilities
DAAD provides
PhD scholarships including a maximum of
eight months for language training, course
work and preparation of research proposal
and PhD scholarship with a total of 34 month,
air tickets and survey costs, travel cost of
supervisor, funding of participating in
workshops and excursions, contribution to cost
of publications, e.g. PhD thesis
Funding of overhead cost of the management of the programme
and re-invitation of Alumni to Hohenheim for a maximum of
three month every third year
Universität Hohenheim provides

PhD research on a topic related to home country
Participation in international conferences
Strategic planning for future carreer at home country
Alumni network and a comprehensive re-invitation program
Office space and equipement
All facilities of a university including social and cultural environement
