A B O U T T H E I N S T I T U T E
The International Institute for Population Sciences(IIPS), Mumbai, formerly known as the DemographicTraining and Research Centre (DTRC) till 1970, wasestablished in July 1956 under the joint sponsorship ofSir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India and theUnited Nations. It serves as a regional center forTraining and Research in Population Studies for theESCAP region.
IIPS holds a unique position among all the regionalpopulation centers. It was the first such center started,and it serves a much larger population than any of theother regional centers. The Institute is under theadministrative control of the Ministry of Health andFamily Welfare, Government of India.
Institute had conducted many prime surveys likeNational Family Health Survey (NFHS), District LevelHousehold Survey (DLHS), Assessment of National RuralHealth Mission (NRHM), YOUTH in India Project, GlobalAdult Tobacco Survey (GATS India Project), ResearchIntervention on Sexual Health Theory to Action (RISHTAProject), and Nutrition Surveys and Longitudinal AgingStudy in India (LASI).

It is my great pleasure to introduce InternationalInstitute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai whosehistory goes way back to 1956. IIPS has been recognizedas Deemed University considering its wide contributionto the field of demographic and health research,teaching and training. The Institute is able tosuccessfully blend cutting edge research with teaching,with the help of a set of accomplished members offaculty having a multidisciplinary background. Thestudents are equipped in dealing with large datasets,use advanced quantitative and qualitative techniquesand learn how to interpret the results for better policyand program interventions. Our students excel in thefields of Population Sciences and Biostatistics. Ourcollaborations with international organizations such asUNICEF, UNFPA, WHO etc. as well as with world’sleading universities help us to groom and expose ourstudents in the emerging areas of population studiesand health research. A B O U T T H E C O U R S E
The two years (full-time) Master degree course isdesigned to provide high level of understanding ofpopulation sciences including an in-depth knowledge ofthe linkages between population and various socio-economic, health and environmental factors. EveryIndian student is awarded Govt. of India fellowshipworth INR 100,000/. The students of this course areequipped with technical knowledge and being providedwith rigorous hands-on training on various statisticaland analytical software such as STATA, R, SPSS, GISand Spatial analysis, GeoDa, MORTPAK 4, Spectrum,AtlasTi, ANTHROPAC and NVIVO by end of the course.Students also take up various certification courses likeTABLEAU, MySQL, Python and many more. ThisProgram requires successful completion of 21 mainpapers in the area of Population Studies andDemography, optional papers and a dissertation.Students are also trained in Research Methodology thatinvolves the successful completion of a projectinvolving fieldwork

Competent in Research & Fieldwork: The studentshave conducted primary data collection and analysispart of the coursework. Students also presentdissertation paper for completion of the course
Strong Demographic Skills: The course structure ismainly focused on modern Demographical andPopulation Sciences and Techniques. Students arewell equipped with theoretical knowledge andempirical training. The emphasis on quantitativeanalysis enables students to develop bettertechniques for statistical analysis, inferential analysis,and other tools essential for effective decision making.
The students are also equipped with qualitativeresearch techniques and are enabled to monitor andevaluate policies and programs.
Analytical Skills: Students are competent to handlelarge scale datasets like Census, NFHS, NSSO, analyzethem and deduce conclusive results. All students aretrained to work in groups an deliver presentationswithin stipulated time.
Equipped in relevant Statistical Software: Theprofiles of the students are well supplemented withprofessional training in software skills like R, STATA,
SPSS, MORTPAK, GIS, Nvivo and others.
