(Required of all applicants seeking a Student or Exchange Visitor Student Status)
It is necessary that the information requested below be provided since very few students receive financial support from the university andimmigration regulations severely limit or prohibit employment in the United States for students holding non-immigrant status (F-1, J-1).
Because Wayne State University is a tax-supported institution, most financial aid funds are reserved for legalresidents of the United States. Normally, graduate students from abroad are eligible to apply for scholarships, fellowships, and graduate assistantships only after having demonstrated exceptionally good academic progressduring the first year of their graduate study. However, some departments award graduate assistantships to foreignapplicants at the time of admission; please consult with the chair of the department to which you are applying. Most assistantships do not cover costs for an entire calendar year. Proof of additional funds from other sourceslisted below may be necessary before a certificate of eligibility for a student visa can be issued. A non-resident is expected to provide funding for the first year of study (two semesters or eight months and afour-month summer period) in addition to all transportation, housing, and miscellaneous costs.
