INTERNATIONAL DRESS UP DAY TOMORROW FRIDAY MARCH 15.

This is a Junior School Council initiative – their Term 1 fundraiser to cover the cost of the new recycle bins they organised as well as purchase some additional games for classes to use inside on hot or wet days.

You could be a soccer player from Brazil, a Mexican with a sombrero, an Aussie in t shirt and shorts, royalty from England, and lots more– these are some of the ideas JSC students discussed at their meeting on Tuesday. Please bring a gold coin donation.

THERE WILL BE A SHORT PARADE AT 9.10am on the BASKETBALL COURTS – where each grade will parade around the court. Please feel welcome to join in the fun.

Friday is the National Day of Action against Bullying. JSC thought this was a good idea to feature a celebration of different cultures and nations in a message of tolerance and co-operation.

As a registered school in this initiative, our classes have been and will be involved in activities associated with the National Day of Action against Bullying. A very important focus for discus-sion and action for all.

START OF TERM 2 – Two day week

I draw your attention to the very unusual start of term 2 which is fast approaching.

Term 1 finishes Friday April 5.

Monday April 22 is Easter Monday

Term 2 commences Tuesday April 23

Thursday April 25 is ANZAC DAY holiday

Friday April 26 is a Student Free Day at Sherbourne –

staff will be involved in First Aid training. Effectively the only school days that week will be the Tuesday and Wednesday. Please note on your calendar. If there is sufficient interest the CAMP AUSTRALIA Out of School Care program will run that day. We need at least 18 children to attend for the program on Friday 26 April to make it viable to run.

Please let Tiffany, our Camp Australia Co-ordinator, know in writing if you and your children would like this service on Friday April 26 as soon as possible.

Thank you

SCHOOL COUNCIL

Next Wednesday March 20 at 7.30pm will be the first meeting of our new School Council. This will take place in the staffroom. It is also our Annual Reporting meeting – where our 2018 Annual Report will be presented. This is a public meeting – all are welcome. School Council will endorse the Annual Report once approved and it will be posted on our website.

SPS CROSS COUNTRY

SPS CROSS COUNTRY Wednesday March 20 Blair Reserve

Our school Cross country is a very special annual Sherbourne event. Students will depart from school walking to Blair reserve just after 9.00am. We encourage students to wear their House colours Freeman – Red, Lewis – green, Perkins, yellow and Moneghetti blue. Students must wear a hat and carry their drink bottle and some snacks with them. Students requiring asthma medication or other medication MUST carry it with them to Blair Reserve. There is a First Aid officer on site. We will need lots of parent helpers and supporters.

Students may wish to bring a small back pack.

We commence with the Junior school races – Preps run 1 lap, Year 1s run 2 laps and Year 2s run 3 laps of the “oval” course.

Year 3-6s run the 1 km track which involves running beyond the oval, up the hill behind the footy oval and back around the kindergarten. We need lots of parent helpers to make this course safe and supervised. The event cannot run without sufficient parent supervisors.

The Prep -2 students stay to watch the running of the Year 3 race before walking back to school. We will also require parents to walk with the classes to and from school. They will return in time for lunch. If you can help for the morning please let the office know. THANK YOU!

It promises to be a fabulous morning. Please make sure you have completed your consent on Compass.

Office of E Safety

It is very concerning when young people have been exposed to any content that scares them or plays on their emotions, like those reported via the Momo Challenge. Although it has now been widely reported and exposed as a viral hoax, the Momo Challenge is not the first, nor will it be the last, online “challenge” or phenomenon to target our children with potentially harmful consequences.

Our research shows 81% of parents hand their child an internet-connected device by the age of 4, so active parental engagement and oversight of a child’s online activities is critical from the start, to help ensure they are prepared for what they may encounter. As young people often do not have the maturity or judgement to cope with confronting content online, it’s important to guide and instil critical reasoning skills, so they are aware that not everything they see or receive online is real.

We encourage parents to co-view, co-play, ask questions about the games and apps they are using, and let them know you are there to support them if they are upset or uncomfortable about anything they see online.

Five top tips to help limit your child’s exposure to harmful content online:

1. Engage in your child’s online activities – ask what apps, sites and games they’re using and make sure they’re age-appropriate

2. Use parental controls on devices to help limit what your child is exposed to

3. Let them know not everything they see online is real or true.

4. Help them report and block upsetting content they see on social media sites or apps.

5. Let them know they can come to you about anything upsetting they see online, and contact Kids Helpline if they need further support.

Parents who are concerned their child may be susceptible to self-harm should be aware of the signs to look out for and know where to go for help – see more info here:

SCHOOL PRIDE OVAL UPDATE

We are very excited the new sign in Outlook Crescent announcing the works is a positive sign of progress!

We should be able to publish a timeline shortly. Please be aware the Fernside Avenue staff carpark will turn into the Workers compound for the duration of the project.

This will be a minor inconvenience – more for staff - for a great gain for our school.

We will keep you posted with further developments.

STUDENT LED PROGRESS MEETINGS

This term our student led progress meetings will take place over 2 days, Tuesday March 26 and Wednes-day April 3 running from 3.30pm until 7.00pm on both dates.

Some classes will be enabled to run from 2.30pm on one of those dates. Bookings on Compass will open this Monday March 18 and close on Friday March 22. The booking system has been revised by Compass and seems a lot more user friendly this year.

The focus of these meetings is to discuss the progress of your child, recent assessments will be shared and goals for future learning. Meetings will run for 15 minutes and will include a 5 minute parent and teacher only time, the opportunity to talk without your child. Please do not wait until these meeting dates to share other important information with your teacher such as anxieties or worries your child shares with you, shared parental arrangements, any questions. Contact via email, written note or in person is easily arranged and really valued.

There will be alternate arrangements made for 1/2K class and additional dates/times set for 1/2M this term.

At our last Assembly we have a visit by Mondo from Mondo Recycling. We were told we are doing a great job recycling our old clothes, shoes, bags, linen at Sherbourne through our clothing bin in the Outlook Crescent Car park. Here is Mondo with our Junior School Councillors, Environmental Captains and school leaders – so many of our students working towards reducing our impact on the environment.

NUDE FOOD DAY

The Environmental Captains would like us all to do our bit towards reducing waste next Thursday March 21 by packing our lunch in containers and trying to use no packaging. There’s a challenge for us all! We will report back on how we go.

Olivia and Ella.
