Our Focus: Mental Health• When traumas happen in developing countries, mental health and the psychological trauma is often overlooked

• For most children, once their physical wounds are healed, mental wounds still remain

• After disasters children are usually left without parents and necessary emotional

support

• The lack of mental health treatment can impair

education and skills to cope with loss

Page 5: INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S DAY 2013

Culture• In certain cultures, children are

ostracized for mental health problems

• Mental health is not a priority when funding is provided

• Mental health problems are not regarded in a lot of cultures or believe that those who have it

are ‘bewitched’

• Consequences of war, prolonged conflict, natural

disasters, AIDS, and substance abuse all add to the emotional

burden of children

Page 6: INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S DAY 2013

Why?A disproportionately large percentage of the "burden of disease", as

calculated by the World Health Organization (WHO), falls in the category of "neuropsychiatric conditions in children and adolescents"

Page 7: INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S DAY 2013

Global Health Series in the Lancet

Mental health disorders interact with other health conditions to make the burden of illness worse

“There can be no health without mental health.”

There is insufficient funding

WHO believes 1/5 of all children (<18) suffer from a mental health disorder

Page 8: INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S DAY 2013

What can WE do? Donate to non-profit

agencies that provide mental health programs as well as aid

Help in the de-stigmatization of disorders through education campaigns

Aid in research that provides culturally-relevant psychological treatments

Every child deserves to smile
