Based on observations made lastFriday (Sep 10) evening and Saturday(Sep 11), Gilimanuk Harbor was morecrowded by private cars. Even, thewhole area of parking lot at the harborlast Friday afternoon was filled by pri-vate cars. Such a condition was esti-mated to continue until Sunday. Thereason was that domestic tourists inBali would be back to Java. Mean-while, the traffic of motorbikes ranmore smoothly and no accumulationoccurred as on the previous days.Nyoman Gamia, one of the residentsof Jembrana admitted to intentionallycross with friends to meet one of the

UNIVERSAL or kahyangan jagattemple being very famous in NusaPenida, Klungkung, is the DalemPenataran Peed Temple. Its temple an-niversary coincides with Buda CemengKlawu falling every six months. By andlarge, the festivity takes place or nyejerfor five days. Similar celebration oc-curred on the recent grandiose anniver-sary whose peak ensued last Saturday(Sep 8). The anniversary processionlasted for five days and ended this Mon-day (Sep 13) morning. During thenyejer period, Hindu devotees fromvarious regions had adequate opportu-nity to say prayers.

Hindu devotees—living outsideNusa Penida—wishing to say prayersto Dalem Peed have to cross the sea.Crossing time required is approxi-mately 30 minutes from PadangbaiHarbor and approximately one hourfrom Benoa Harbor, Denpasar, by ship.Similarly, people can get there fromSanur Beach by riding traditional boator jukung. Devotees do not only wor-ship during the temple festival, but alsoon particular days with the purpose ofinvoking holy water in the series oflarge religious ceremony in the templesof customary villages.

There are four temple’s courtyardsgetting coalesced into the area ofPenataran Agung Peed. The templesconsist of Segara Temple located on thenorthernmost section near seaside.Segara Temple is used to venerate theLord Varuna. Few meters toward thesouth follows the Taman Temple sur-rounded by a pond. This temple is func-tioned as a sanctum of purification andthe abode of Ida Bhatara Ulun Danu.

It occurs especially to en-vironmental sanitation and the ob-jects becoming a tourist attraction. On the contrary, it lacks for attentionto sanitation in and aroundLembongan Island. These conditionsare worried to have an impact on thedecrease of tourist visits.

Complaints about the lack forconcern about the sanitation ofLembongan are not only deliveredby tourists, but also by tourism per-petrator and observer from local vil-lage, namely Made Senaya. “Yes,frankly speaking, I also regret it verymuch. Attention to sanitation inLembongan is very low,” he said lastFriday (Sep 10).

As a matter of fact, he said a num-ber of large cruise ships made moneyby selling the uniqueness ofLembongan, one of the three smallislands in the Nusa Penida, every day.At least, he said, those cruise shipsconveyed passenger amounting to300 tourists to Lembongan with afairly expensive rate. “Unfortunately, the contribution to Lembongan isonly IDR 1,000 per person. Dalem Peed Temple:A sanctum to invoke blessing and world’s safety

Meanwhile, in the west lies the RatuGede Temple as the abode of Ida RatuGede Mas Mecaling. Then, in the eastlies the Penataran Temple as the abodeof Ida Batara Lingsir or Ratu Mas.

Devotees generally start their pray-ing from Segara Temple, then resumedto Taman Temple, Ratu Gede Templeand end at Penataran Peed Temple. InSegara Temple lies a shrine with a hugefish effigy. Meanwhile, at TamanTemple also lies a shrine with palm fi-ber roof and surrounded by pond. Be-tween the pond and the shrine stands adividing wall. Similar shrine also ex-ists in the Ratu Gede Temple. To enterthe temple, there are three arched en-trance gates to choose from.

In the meantime, the Penataran Peedhas many shrines in a row on the eastside and north side. Somewhat to thecenter stands a big tall chamber build-ing. A Padmasana shrine exists in thetemple complex where it is situated innortheast facing to the southwest.

Coordinator of the temple priest ofPenataran Peed, Mangku Gede Mundraaccompanied by Jero Mangku Selametfrom Gianyar, said that devotees usu-ally invoked blessing or safety of theuniverse along with its contents. How-ever, there were also people begging tosharpen their spiritual knowledge.

“Devotees come to worship withvarious petitions, such as healthy, tran-quility, safety, blessing up to sharpen-ing spiritual knowledge and so forth,”Jero Mangku Selamet added.

Meanwhile, a lecturer at the HinduDharma Institute (IHDN Denpasar),Ketut Wiana, in his book entitledMengenal Pura Sad Kahyangan dan

Kahyangan Jagat (Introduction to SadKahyangan and Kahyangan JagatTemples) published by Pustaka Bali Postsays that Dalem Penataran Peed in NusaPenida is a temple to venerate the Al-mighty God as the creator and Purusha(cosmic male) and Prakriti (cosmic fe-male). Purusha poses the power of thesoul or spiritual power giving breath tolife in nature along its contents. Prakritidenotes material physical strength orphysical resources embodying into thereal strength of Purusha.

In Dalem Penataran Peed, Ida BataraDalem Peed is venerated in the Gedongshrine, while the shrine of Ratu GedeNusa is situated in different area, namelyin the western of Dalem Penataran Peedshrine. Shrine of Dalem Penataran Peedis located in the east, while Padmasanashrine as representation of Batara onMount Agung located in the north ofDalem Penataran Peed area. DalemPenataran Peed poses unification of theworship of Shiva on Mount Agung andGoddess Durgha or Goddess Uma inPuncak Mundi Temple. In short, DalemPenataran Peed is functioned for venera-tion of Shiva-Durgha and the worshipof king called Dalem Temple.

It is known as the Penataran Peedbecause the temple serves as the court-yard of Puncak Mundi Temple andworship of Goddess Uma-Durgha. Thetemple symbolizes the meeting point ofPurusha element of Batara on MountAgung and the Goddess Uma-Durghain Puncak Mundi. small. Hence, the sanitation manage-ment handled by local customary vil-lage is not maximal,” pointed outSenaya.

According to him, the manage-ment of the cruise ships should payattention to the sanitation, too. Atleast, they provided more contribu-tions to the region so the customaryvillage could prepare janitors. Or theycould directly get involved to the fieldby giving assistance in the form offunds or trash cans.

“By doing so, it will engender abalance and sustainability betweenthe making of money and participa-tion in maintaining the environmen-tal sanitation,” he said. Ideally,Lembongan should be clean as whatpromoted. He expected it would cer-tainly not disappoint the tourists vis-iting the island. Otherwise, it mightultimately decrease their visits.

More ironically, he said, therewere persons attempting “to sell”Lembongan by claiming a numberof land and objects in Nusa Penidaas their own. The promotion sale wasdone indirectly through the Internet. On that account, he invited all rel-evant stakeholders to promote thetourism of Lembongan Island. How-ever, the island should be kept as itwas. (kmb20)

line 19 cases. This shows how highspace using violations still are inDenapasar.

These cases weren’t the first timeanymore. Before, DTRP took actionto at least 335 building owners by giv-ing warning letters. An lately it’s notrare Peace and Order Agency (DinasTramtib) and Police Civil Service(SatPol PP) who’s also agency whocan confiscate businesses who arestepping out the Region Regulationsof Denpasar City. Head of DenpasarDTRP, Ir. Made Kusuma Diputra, MTsaid those warning letters were givenas they are not following the validregulations for example not follow-ing demarcation line, outside the greenzone or the city’s green open space(RTHK), also no building permits. This letter will be a first warning andif there are more violations, there’llbe more supervising, “If that from su-pervising a violation occurred therewill be a first warning letter.”

If this first letter is ignored, thenthere’ll be a second one. Then there’llbe a third one and goes through toTramtib Agency as well. Taking itdown action or other sanctions will bedone by Region Regulations regula-tors or in this case it’s Tramtib andSatPol PP.

It is admitted from the 335 casesthat happened all this time, at most itconnects to the building permits. Lotsof building owners don’t want to takecare of it so warning letters goes mostdue to building permits. More of it wasmost for demarcation line.

For the future, there’ll be an ar-rangement for buildings presentationin Denpasar City which means thosethat are on main routs were hoped touse Balinese ornaments. GENEVA – British Defense Sec-retary Liam Fox said on Saturdaythat Britain’s “battle against terror-ism” in Afghanistan was not the endof the global struggle, and the coun-try must be prepared to act elsewherein future.

Speaking to a meeting of the In-ternational Institute for StrategicStudies (IISS) think tank, Fox saidpulling British troops from Afghani-stan before 2015 would boost mili-tants everywhere, because only bythen would British forces, workingwith the U.S.-led coalition, haveachieved their security aims.

Fox told the gathering in Genevaof military officers and strategiststhat British defense planners con-ducting a review of military priori-ties had to take account of the possi-bility that its forces might have tointervene again elsewhere in theworld.

SYDNEY – Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard Saturday namedformer leader Kevin Rudd as her foreign minister, less than threemonths after she staged a sudden and ruthless coup against him.

edly left devastated by his lightningremoval from power, said he washonoured to take on the new role.

“There are national interests ofthis country which extend far be-yond the personal interests of anyindividual. That applies to me aswell,” he told journalists inCanberra.

Gillard has repeatedly defendedher decision to challenge the oncehugely popular Rudd, saying hisgood government had “lost its way”,and called a general election justthree weeks after taking power.

But Rudd’s sudden ousting —complete with his tearful farewellpress conference — cast a shadowover her campaign and Labor suf-fered a heavy backlash in the Au-gust 21 polls.

The election gave neither Labornor the opposition enough seats torule outright, leaving both partiescourting independents in a bid toform a government — somethingGillard’s Labor finally managed todo Tuesday after 17 days of fraughtnegotiations.

But the unlikely collection oflawmakers who allowed her to re-tain power have left her with a frag-ile 76-74 seats in her favour and thegovernment could be removed in abyelection prompted by the defec-tion or death of one MP.

As she reshuffled her cabinet,Gillard said the promises she had

made to secure the backing of thecountry independents had beenhonoured with the appointment ofSimon Crean as minister for re-gional Australia.

The prime minister said herdeputy Wayne Swan would con-tinue as Treasurer while SenatorPenny Wong will take on financeas she appointed some of thepowerbrokers who aided her coup

against Rudd to ministries.Bill Shorten was named as assis-

tant Treasurer and minister for finan-cial services and superannuationwhile Mark Arbib was given thevaried portfolios of indigenous em-ployment, sport and social housingand homelessness.

Conservative opposition leaderTony Abbott said the ministerialline-up rewarded “the plotters who

executed an elected prime minister.”“Today’s reshuffle promises a

continuation of unstable and incom-petent government,” he said in astatement.

“It delivers for faceless men, notthe Australian people.”

Australia’s new government isexpected to be sworn in by Gover-nor-General Quentin Bryce inCanberra early next week.

Kabul’s own army and policewould be sufficiently trained to as-sume adequate national security re-

2015, a point at which on currentprogress we expect to haveachieved our security aims, it wouldbe a shot in the arm to violentjihadists everywhere, re-energizingviolent radical and extremist Islam-ists,” he said.

“It would send a signal that wedid not have the moral resolve andthe political fortitude to see throughwhat we ourselves have describedas national security imperative.”

Fox’s remarks on the timing ofa withdrawal are in line with thoseof Prime Minister David Cameronand Foreign Minister WilliamHague. But the tone of his remarks, and his reference to the possibilityof future interventions, suggest amore accepting approach towardarmed missions overseas.

Concerns about the expensiveNATO-led Afghan mission havemounted as governments slashspending to rein in budget deficits, and as the death toll has risen. Junewas the deadliest month for foreigntroops in the nine-year conflict.

Archaeological researches in Balihave found a number of archeologi-cal heritages, which belonged to pre-historic and historic remains. Prehis-toric remains proved the earliest ofthe people’s life, started from hunt-ing and food gathering through culti-vation up to mastering the advancedtechnology. Such remains indicatedthe struggle and the achievement ofthe people’s life gradually, after adapt-ing and exploring their environmentits natural resources for their life, be-cause the nature was still quite dan-gerous. On the other hands, the re-mains also demonstrated the relation-ship of the prehistoric Balinese peopleto those who lived in Java, Sumateraetc, even to the South-East Asianpeople.

The most important of the prehis-toric live in Bali is the invention ofthe metallic technology along withthe megalithic tradition. During theadvance technology the Balinesepeople have produced several kind ofbronze goods for ritual purpose suchas kettledrums and for daily uses aswell such as axes etc. Mastering theadvance technology, Balinese peoplehave succeeded to develop stonemoulds in the village of Manuaba(Gianyar) for casting bronze kettle-drum. The human-mask decoration, showed a remarkable similarities tothe decorations of the huge kettle-drums found in the village of Pejengnot so far of the east of Manuaba, butthe stone moulds of Manuaba aresmall in its size.

It should be noted here that bronzekettledrums were not only found inBali, but also in Java, and EasternIndonesian Island. Another bronzemoulds made of clay were also foundin West Java, but not for producing

Archaeological heritage in Balikettledrums, but for making spear-heads, axes, etc. Regarding the hu-man-mask decorations, which werefounds on the kettledrums of Pejeng,on the stone moulds of Manuaba andon the number of the sarcophagi foundin Bali, was regarded as symbol of theleader’s or the ancestor’s spirits. Thepeople believed that the spirit, whowere abode on the top of the moun-tain or on the inaccessible place havethe magic power for protecting the liv-ing society. When Hinduism havespread widely in Indonesia, the peoplebelieved to the sacred mountain as theplace of the Hindu pantheons and theancestor’s spirit as well. Based on thisconception, then the people built theirtemples on the mountain area such asas Pura Besakih on the slope of MountAgung.

Along with the development of themetallic industry, the megalithic tra-dition increased not only in Bali, butalso in Sumatera, Flores etc. Severalkinds of megalithic remains werefounds there namely menhirs, dolmens, menhirstatues, stepped pyra-mids etc. It is a matter of facts that themegalithic tradition have strongly in-fluenced the people’s life and it is notsurprising any more that living mega-lithic tradition could be found until topresent day in Nias, Toraja, Bali andEastern Indonesians Islands. In Bali, the megalithic remains, exe the sar-cophagi are regarded as sacred monu-ments and functioned for worshippingthje Hindu Trinity, the local deities andthe ancestor’s spirit (Sutaba 1984).

Researches on the advanced tech-nology and on the megalithic traditionin Bali in particular, have made con-clusions that Balinese people havebuild their social organization headedby the leaders. The well organizations

have made favorable conditions formastering the advance technology. Then the social and cultural develop-ment became the solid foundation forfacing the new era when Hinduismarrived in Bali (Sutaba, 1930).

Bali have got Hindu-Budhis influ-ences nearly at the 9 century A.D. asProved by the finding of clay stuphikasand seals beared Budhis formula, nearthe village of Pejeng, Gianyar. Then apillar inscription was rediscovered inBlanjong Sanur (Badung) which men-tioned the name of the king KesariWarmadewa. This inscription wasoriginated from c.10 century A.D.Since this period, Hinduism wasspread widely in Bali and went deeplyinto the life of the Balinese people andthen survived until today. Having welldeveloped social organization and cul-tural life before the arrival of Hindu-ism, have led the Balinese people suc-cessfully modified the new elementsin accordance with their characters andbecame the new one beared Balineseidentity.

The wellknown king of Bali is acouple royal named king Udayana andhis wife Gunapryadharmapati (c.10 cen-tury A.D), then succeeded by their fami-lies. During the ancient history of Bali, anumber of temples were built nearly inthe whole island. In these temple sev-eral kinds of historical remains were pre-served e.g. statues, inscriptions etc. Asthe follower of Hinduism, Balinesepeople regard the temples including theremains in them as sacred monumentsfor worshiping the Hindu pantheons, the local deities and the ancestor’sspirit as well. This religious functionwas the responsibility of the Balinesepeople for keeping the monumentsin well conditions and the welfare ofthe living society. (BTN)

Among the delicacy of Balinese food with hotspices, in fact, Balinese community also retains easy-peasy snack but sometimes a bit harder. One of themis the bean of teep. Its tree resembles to that ofbreadfruit. However, its beans are far smallercompared to that of breadfruit. When its fruits haveturned ripe, they usually attract the presence of civet.Actually, this nocturnal cat is only interested to eat theflesh of fruit. Similar thing also happens to coffeebeans. Since the skin of beans is hard it cannot digestthem so civet could only enjoy the flesh. On the nextday, those seeds could be found at the feces of civet. All seeds remain intact. However, if people see theripe fruits first, they will not need to wait the coming ofcivet to pick them.

To process the beans, they are first cleansedthoroughly and dry under the sun. Afterward, theyshould be fried without oil but sand. When they havebeen finely cooked they can be enjoyed while relaxingor lazing. As the shell and beans are slightly hard, itmay take a bit long time to open and chew them. However, if they are indeed dry enough and cookedwell they must be easy to open and crispy. They aregood to consume as slow snack while chatting orwatching TV. (BTN/punia)

THESSALONIKI – PrimeMinister George Papandreou of-fered no handouts to austerity-wearyGreeks but gave some relief to com-panies struggling with recession ina main speech on the economy onSaturday.

Bound by the conditions of a110-billion-euro ($140 billion) EU/IMF bailout deal to rescue Greecefrom bankruptcy, his Socialist gov-ernment has imposed tax rises anddraconian salary and pension cuts tofight deficits, prompting strikes andprotests.

“We are fighting for the sur-vival of Greece,” Papandreou saidin his annual economic policyspeech at a trade fair in the northerncity of Thessaloniki. “Either we’llwin together, or we’ll sink together.”

About 20,000 peoplemarched through the city to protestagainst belt-tightening measures. Afew hundred youths tried to breakthrough police lines cordoning offthe venue and were pushed backwith tear gas in clashes that lasted afew minutes.

Papandreou said his govern-ment will continue pushing reformsand opening up sectors of theeconomy such as electricity andfreight transport and also overhaulloss-making state firms including

BEIJING - China’s inflationedged higher in August as thenation’s worst flooding in a decadedrove an increase in food costs andindustrial growth continued toquicken.

Consumer prices rose 3.5 percentin August compared with a year ear-lier, the National Bureau of Statis-tics announced Saturday. It was thehighest level in 22 months and asmall increase over July’s 3.3 per-cent.

Much of the increase was fueledby a jump in food prices, which roseby 7.5 percent because summerstorms and floods ruined crops anddisrupted shipping.

Overall, the country’s ConsumerPrice Index, increased 2.8 percentyear-on-year in the first eightmonths of 2010, said Sheng Laiyun, the NBS spokesman. The Chinesegovernment had set a target of try-ing to keep inflation within 3 per-cent for the year.

Sheng downplayed concernsabout rising inflation, saying:“There are factors fueling pricerises, but I think there are even morefactors reducing prices.”

Industrial growth acceleratedslightly to 13.9 percent year-on-yearin August from July’s 13.4 percentincrease as China’s recovery con-tinues.

“For the past three months, it hasfluctated between 13 percent to 14percent so it’s obvious that indus-trial operations have shifted fromfast growth to stable growth now,”Sheng said.

TAIPEI - A pact that will reduce tariffs on hundreds of products traded between Taiwan andChina took effect Sunday, a significant step for the Taiwanese president’s efforts to forge closertrade ties with Beijing.

car parts. Those products valuearound $13.8 billion, about 16 per-cent of the mainland’s imports fromthe island in 2009.

In return, Taiwan will slash du-ties on 267 Chinese items totaling$2.86 billion, about 10.5 percent ofthe mainland exports to the islandlast year. Among some of those prod-ucts are agricultural produce and tex-tiles.

The tariffs are to be eliminated inthree stages over the next two years, under the bilateral pact.

Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou has hailed the pact as necessaryto prevent Taiwan’s economicmarginalization as Beijing strength-ens its commercial ties to its Asianneighbors and has said it would helpreduce tensions between the islandand mainland China.

On Saturday, China’s Ministry ofCommerce highlighted the pact’sparamount role in stimulating bilat-eral trade exchanges.

“We believe the implementationof the pact will further promote ex-changes and cooperation in cross-strait trade and help cross-straiteconomies develop together,”Spokesman Yao Jian said in thestatement on the ministry’s website.

Taiwan and China split amid civilwar in 1949. Beijing continues toclaim the island as part of its terri-tory and threatens to attack if Tai-wan moves to formalize indepen-dence.

After taking office in May 2008,Ma has moved to improve relationsbetween the sides to boost Taiwan’ssluggish economy and avoid pos-sible cross-strait conflicts.

Greek PM offers some tax relief, but no handoutsHellenic Railways (OSE).

“I ask all the country’s pro-ductive forces to join us, to supportthis great change,” he said.

Bowing to calls from thebusiness world buckling under adeepening recession, he said hewould speed up relief for corpora-tions by bringing forward plannedcuts in retained earnings tax to 20from 24 percent in 2011 instead of2014.

But he avoided concretepledges to a restive public that hastaken to the streets in sometimesviolent protests this year, reluctantto displease international lenders orrisk the next installment of the loandue in the last quarter.

“We are still at the start ofour effort. I don’t want to make bigpromises but I understand the diffi-culties poor pensioners face,” hesaid. “I will ask the finance minis-ter to do his best depending on howrevenues go.”

Despite the harsh measures, opinion polls show his Socialistparty ahead of the conservative op-position. A poll by Kappa Researchfor To Vima on Sunday, showed theSocialists would win 29.1 percentof the vote versus 21.3 percent forthe conservatives if elections wereheld now.

Last October, Papandreoucapitalized on a wave of anger at

scandals to trounce his conservativerival, Costas Karamanlis, whobroke the tradition of making gen-erous promises at the Thessalonikifair and told Greeks he wouldfreeze public sector salaries, even-tually losing the election.

But huge deficits inheritedfrom the conservatives plungedGreece into a debt crisis that shookthe euro zone and internationallenders stepped in to rescue thecountry in exchange for tough fis-cal measures.

Consumption has been hit aspublic sector wages were cut by 15percent, pensions by 10 percent andvalue added tax increased by 4 per-centage points to 23 percent. Theeconomy is set to contract by 4 per-cent this year and unemploymenthit 11.6 percent in July from 8.6 theyear before.

Declining consumption ishurting state revenues and threat-ening targets to cut the deficit to 8.1of GDP this year from 13.6 percentin 2009.

“The market is pretty wor-ried about whether the governmentwill find the golden medium to kickstart the economy and secure therevenues that are missing,” an Ath-ens-based analyst said. “Only ifthey manage to find this golden me-dium, will the country be able toget out of this tunnel.”

China’s inflation edges up,driven by food costs

All 39 industries saw year-on-year growth in August, with textilesup 11.6 percent; chemical materi-als and products up 12.9 percent;general equipment manufacturingup 20.1 percent, and transportationequipment manufacturing up 16.6percent, Sheng said.

Analysts expect inflation will re-main in check, with the food pricespike expected to have only a tem-porary effect. Overall, China willcontinue to see a modest slowingin industrial growth by year’s end.

“On closer examination, under-lying inflation remains subdued, and in the details the growth datapoints to a continued slowdown inthe months ahead,” said Tom Orlik,an analyst in Beijing for Stone &McCarthy Research Associates.“We see little in the August data tochange the narrative of slowinggrowth and fading inflation in thefinal months of the year, or to sparka policy response from the govern-ment

China’s power generation in Au-gust rose 12.6 percent from a yearearlier to 390.3 billion kilowatt-hours, Sheng added.

Meanwhile, retail sales of con-sumer goods hit 1.257 billion yuan($185 million) in August, markingan 18.4 percent rise year on year.Sheng said the increase in consump-tion in August was mainly attrib-uted to better-than-expected autosales.

Investment in factories and otherfixed assets also increased, reaching14.1 trillion yuan ($2.1 billion) in thefirst eight months this year, a year-on-year increase of 24.8 percent.

Legend admitted that he washomeschooled for part of his early life, before entering public school. As agifted student, he later was “put in atrack where you’re cultivated and in-vested in,” which is not afforded to moststudents.

He went on to graduate from an IvyLeague college. “I was an exception tothe rule at my school, but that doesn’tmean the system works, it just meansin that very small subset the systemworked, which is not nearly enough,”Legend said.

Most others “don’t have that same

“If a film punctures through thatdisconnect, then people feel like it ispossible and they can fix our schools,”he said, lamenting that 1.2 million kidsdrop out of school in America everyyear. But the problems “have becomeso extreme that these sort of incremen-tal changes are no longer going to doit,” he said. “We have to make funda-mental changes.”

LONDON – John Travolta was onto something. Women are mostattracted to male dancers who have big, flamboyant moves similar tothe actor’s trademark style, British scientists say in a new study.

Kris McCarty and colleagues at Northumbria University and theUniversity of Gottingen in Germany asked 19 men aged 18 to 35 whowere not professional dancers to dance in a laboratory for one minuteto a basic drum rhythm. They filmed the men’s movements with a dozencameras, and then turned those movements into computer-generatedavatars so the study could focus on moves, not appearances.

Scientists then showed the dancing avatars to 37 women, who ratedtheir skills on a scale of 1 to 7. According to the women, the bestdancers were those who had a wide range of dance moves and fo-cused on the head, neck and torso.

The research was published this week in the journal, Biology Let-ters, a publication of Britain’s Royal Society. It was paid for byNorthumbria University.

Study: Flamboyant male dancing attracts women best“In principle, it is possible to break down the motion patterns that

are informative and attractive to women,” said Rufus Johnstone, areader in the evolution of animal behavior at Cambridge University. He was not connected to the research. Johnstone said there were simi-larities between animal mating rituals and what happens in moderndance clubs.

“There are lots of cues females use when choosing a mate, like apeacock puffing out its tail,” he said. “Dancing for humans couldsignal whether a male is fit because it requires the expenditure of a lotof energy.”

Nick Neave, an evolutionary psychologist at Northumbria Univer-sity and one of the study’s co-authors, said women may subconsciouslyjudge how fit a man is by the fluidity of his dancing. He said theirresearch was likely subjective and different cultures would have dif-ferent measures for what constitutes good dancing.

Neave advised bad dancers to improve their core body moves. “Themovements around the head, neck and trunk were the most impor-tant,” he said. “The good dancers had lots of different movementsand used them with flair and creativity.” Johnstone said men who arebad dancers shouldn’t despair.

“Among animals, courtship rituals are very important when thereare very obvious physical displays,” he said. “In humans, I suspect itis much more complicated and may come down to more than whetheror not a man is a good dancer.”

“It’s a luxury art that was practisedat the table of every European court andthere are so many different forms be-cause the courts competed over whohad the most beautifully dressed table,”Ilsebill Barta, scientific consultant at theImperial Furniture Collection, told AFP.

The art of folding paper and fabricgoes back centuries — the first recordeduse of folded napkins in Europe was in1529 — and did not originate in Asiaas commonly believed. But this tradi-tion has all but disappeared.

“I am very happy that we can spreadthis knowledge here, because it has ac-tually been completely lost: Mr Sallashas revived it,” noted Barta.

There are eight folding techniques— including fans, rolls and lilies —which Sallas used as keys to decode thehistoric works.

Ancelotti played down his team’s flyingstart to the season, which has seen them openup an early four-point lead over perennialtitle rivals Manchester United. “It meansnothing,” Ancelotti said. “We’ve started bet-ter than Manchester United, but it will be along race. I said last year that the race is onlydecided at the end of the season. I will saythe same this year.”

Manchester United missed the chance tokeep the pressure on Chelsea after Evertonscored twice in stoppage time to scramble a3-3 draw against Sir Alex Ferguson’s menin Saturday’s early game at Goodison Park.

United had appeared to be cruising to vic-tory after goals from Darren Fletcher,Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov had can-celled out Steven Pienaar’s first half opener.

However a late header from Tim Cahilland shot from Mikel Arteta gave Everton animprobable share of the points to leaveUnited four points behind Chelsea — andFerguson fuming. “Football can do that toyou,” Ferguson said. “In a game of a com-pletely comfortable position we’ve thrownit away - simple as that. We had chances tobury Everton and we didn’t do it.”

LONDON – Chelsea maintained their perfect start to the Premier League seasonon Saturday as a dramatic injury time fight back saw a Wayne Rooney-less Manches-ter United throw away victory at Everton. through Johan Elmander on the stroke of halftime after good work by South Korea inter-national Lee Chong-Yong. Moroccan inter-national Chamakh restored Arsenal’s leadhowever, capitalising on good work fromskipper Cesc Fabregas.

Bolton’s task was made harder when GaryCahill was given a straight red card for a wildlunge on Chamakh before goals from AlexSong and and Carlos Vela sealed the points.Wenger meanwhile said Arsenal’s refusal tobe unsettled by a physical Bolton team wasproof of his team’s growing resilience.

“We have had two games, at Blackburn andtoday, which we certainly would not havetaken six points from two years ago,” Wengersaid. “The players can handle these situa-tions.” At Eastlands, Manchester City’s fal-tering form continued as they were held to a1-1 draw by Blackburn Rovers.

A dreadful mix-up between England goal-keeper Joe Hart and Kolo Toure saw City fallbehind, Nikola Kalinic sneaking in to putBlackburn 1-0 up.

However City got back on level terms earlyin the second half when former French inter-national Patrick Vieira netted a vital equaliserfor Roberto Mancini’s multi-millionaires.City boss Mancini refused to blame Hart forhis blunder.

“This is a fluke, it can happen in footballbut I hope after today we finish making giftsto the opponent. It can happen. Joe Hart is agood goalkeeper,” Mancini stressed.

The 32-year-old Carvalho scored his firstgoal in Madrid colours on 48 minutes to en-sure a winning home debut for Mourinho fol-lowing a disappointing 0-0 draw at RealMallorca on the opening day of the campaign.

Carvalho, who has played for Mourinho atFC Porto, Chelsea and now Real, had a simpletap-in for the winning goal after being set-upby Cristiano Ronaldo.

“The Barcelona defeat is a surprise but it ispart of football and the important thing wasthat we won,” said Ronaldo. “We didn’t playfantastically well but at this stage winning isthe crucial thing.” The victory took Real a pointabove champions Barcelona. Mourinho madefour changes to the starting line-up againstMallorca handing first league starts to Germaninternationals Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira.

Ronaldo was expected to be out for anotherfortnight with an ankle injury but the Portu-guese winger made a miraculous recovery tostart. Ronaldo had the first real opening of thematch on 20 minutes latching on to a pass fromthe lively Ozil but his low shot was well saved.A flat goalless first half saw jeers at the half-time whistle from the unhappy home fans. However, three minutes after the break, Realgave Mourinho his first goal as coach.

Karim Benzema crossed for Ronaldo wholooked certain to score but goalkeeper Ricardoblocked well. Ronaldo reacted quickly, how-ever, to poke the ball to Carvalho for an easytap-in.

Champion Klitschko knocks out Peter to retain titlessecured his 49th knock-out and55th victory in his 58th fight ashe enjoyed the second win of hiscareer against Peter, who turned30 on Saturday.

Klitschko had been due to boxIBF mandatory challengerAlexander Povetkin, but when theRussian pulled out of the fight,

Peter stepped in, but he rarelythreatened the champion.

With Peter tiring in the laterrounds, Klitschko finally brokefree of the Nigerian’s holding tac-tics and landed a flurry of puncheswhich rocked the African and ul-timately left him on the canvas.

“I did everything I could for the

win, I tried to go in to get it earlier. It didn’t happen, but eventually wegot it,” said Klitschko. “He cost mea lot of energy and he definitely de-serves a round of applause.”

This was the third t ime aKlitschko has beaten Peter as el-der brother Vitali beat the Nige-rian with an eighth-round knock-out in October 2008, two roundsquicker than his younger sibling,to win the WBC heavyweighttitle. “I am proud of my brotherand believe he is the better boxer,”said Wladimir when asked abouthis slower win.

Having started out by using hissuperior reach to keep Peter atbay, Klitschko landed a strongleft-right combination in the sec-ond which rocked the Nigerianearly on. The opening rounds weremarred by plenty of holding asPeter struggled againstKlitschko’s obvious reach andheight advantage.

The Ukrainian champion seemedwilling to wear down Peter and nei-ther fighter landed any punches ofsignificance.

Klitschko was put down threetimes when the pair last met in At-lantic City in September 2005 in anIBF eliminator when the 34-year-old survived the onslaught to earn

a unanimous decision over 12rounds. There was no such dramathis time as the challenger took amore conservative approach andPeter resorted to holding tactics, especially in the later rounds.

Peter was labouring by the endof the sixth round, but managed tocatch the champion with a goodright hook. Klitschko stepped up thepace in the seventh and looked forthe knock-out he had promised inthe fight build up.

Peter called a break in the fightearly in the round when he took the10 seconds allowed to re-tape hisgloves, but Klitschko wasted notime to keep up the pressure on thechallenge with a series of tellingpunches.

By the eighth, Peter’s face wasshowing signs of the punishmentKlitschko was dishing out and hisleft eye was starting to close as thereferee Robert Byrd kept warninghim for holding.

In the tenth, Klitschko finallybroke free of Peter’s holds to landthe punches which left the Nigerianflat out on the canvas before beinghelped to his feet.

With 27 knock-outs in 34 wins,Peter was WBC heavyweight cham-pion from 2006 to 2008, but thiswas the fourth defeat of his career.

FERNANDO Alonso has conceded that, despitebeing allowed to keep his controversial victory in theGerman Grand Prix, he needs to finish in the top threeat Monza to keep his title ambition on track.

The Spaniard, currently 41 points off top spot, will startfrom the best possible position for Ferrari’s home grandprix, having claimed the Scuderia’s first pole since Interlagos2008, and is confident that the F10 will be as competitive inthe race as it proved in qualifying. Team-mate Felipe Massaunderlined the car’s potential by taking third on the grid infront of the tifosi, sandwiching McLaren’s Jenson Button, who needs a good result as much as Alonso.

“I think we need a podium minimum to remain in thefight,” Alonso confirmed, “There is not a big pressure, abig stress, about winning the race or winning the nextfew races but, at the same time, we know we cannot af-ford another DNF or another bad result. We must try to

he was never able to demonstrate ifhe would have been able to hold offOgier despite his road position.

“Obviously I never thought wewould go so well after the flu andthe fever and everything - I felt ter-rible at the start of the rally,” saidSolberg. “But the car worked reallywell and I really had a good feelingfor everything. Unfortunately we hadthis problem with the car. But I’mreally happy.”

Both works Fords had also beenin the thick of the battle for victoryduring a thrilling weekend, but bothwere denied by mechanical prob-lems. Jari-Matti Latvala recoveredfrom a Saturday afternoon driveshaftbreakage - which happened just af-ter Solberg’s penalty had given himthe lead - to chase down Dani Sordoand reclaim third from the CitroenJunior driver with four stages to go.

Mikko Hirvonen fared worse, though. He started today second be-hind Solberg and poised to challengefor the lead, only for a differential prob-

He finished behind championshipleader Sebastien Loeb, who was outof sorts all weekend and finished53.3s behind team-mate Ogier infifth. be consistent and try to be on the podium minimum.“If we can win the race, it would be great, but what

we need is consistency, something that we didn’t haveso far in the championship. For that reason, we are notfighting now for first position, but tomorrow we have agreat chance to get a strong result and we will see whereour opponents finish.

“I think, this season, one of our strongest points hasbeen race pace, not so much qualifying, so I don’t havetoo many worries about the pace [on Sunday]. We justneed to do a good start, a consistent pace in the first stintand also when we fit the prime tyres. We know how de-manding Monza is on the mechanical side of the car -we saw some problems on the car yesterday for manyteams, and we saw another problem this morning fortwo or three teams - so it is not an easy race to finish.Let’s try to have everything under control [and see] ifwe can and try to finish the race with the maximum pointspossible. Obviously, we’re in the best position possibleto avoid any risk at the start, but you never know.”

With drivers within the same team taking differentapproaches to qualifying and the race - notably Buttonand Lewis Hamilton at McLaren - the outcome of theirstrategies could prove to be the key to the result, butAlonso is optimistic that Ferrari will be more competi-tive that it proved at Spa.

“Yesterday, I think the maximum number of lapseverybody did was around eight or nine so, after ninelaps, nobody knows how the tyres will behave for any-one,” he noted, “We just need to remain calm and doour race and see what happens in the end.

“Obviously, Spa was a disappointment. We were nottoo quick there, so part of the disappointment of thebad result were concerns about our pace, about our levelof competitiveness. Now though I think we are muchmore focused and much more confident in our latestdevelopments on the car.
