INGLES SUPERIOR, 2016 1 Intermediate 1 – Extra Practice – Chapter 1 Agreement and Disagreement To agree with statements, there are three main things to consider: 1) If the original statement is affirmative, respond with “so.” If the original statement is negative, respond with “neither.” 2) If the auxiliary or main verb is a BE verb, respond with a BE verb. If the auxiliary verb is CAN, respond with CAN. If the verb does not have a specific auxiliary verb and is not a BE verb, respond with a DO verb. 3) Make sure the verb you respond with matches the tense of the original—past, present or future. Example: A: I like hiking. B: So do I. The original statement is affirmative = so. The main verb does not have an explicitly stated auxiliary and is not a BE verb = DO auxiliary. The original statement is in the present tense = do. To disagree with a statement, simply take the opposite of the auxiliary verb . Example: A: I am going to go hiking. B: I'm not. Since a BE verb is the auxiliary in the original statement, simply negate the BE verb in order to disagree. 1. Match the sentences. 1. I am a professional athlete. ___ 2. I can't go horseback riding today. ___ 3. Yesterday, I wasn't in class. ___ 4. I don't like to go camping. ___ 5. Last week, I went scuba diving. ___ 6. I can sail very well. ___ 7. Not the best place for a vacation? The largest island in the world is Greenland, located near Canada and Iceland. Greenland's name makes people think that it is green, but most of Greenland is covered in ice. How did it get its name? Well, a man was sent to the island as a punishment for a crime. He had to live there, but he wanted other people to join him, so he named it Greenland. He hoped the name would get people to move there! Despite the size of the island and the several smaller islands nearby, most of the population lives in small areas on the coast, where there is no ice. Most of the people of Greenland are fishermen, but there are also a large number of scientists who visit to study the different aspects of the cold weather. Greenland also has the largest national park in the world, which is located in the northeast corner of the island. However, despite its size, its name, its friendly people, and its importance for science, not many tourists visit Greenland. Yes, you guessed right: most people think it is too cold for vacations.

Adverbial Clauses

A clause is a group of words that has both a subject and a verb. There are two types of clauses. An independent clause can stand alone and form a sentence by itself. A dependent clause cannot form a sentence by itself. A dependent clause must be accompanied by an independent clause. Adverbial clauses work like adverbs, describing the time, place or manner of the verb. 1) If the dependent adverbial clause is in the simple present tense, the independent clause is in the present or future tense. Examples: When a bride gets married, she usually wears a white dress. (both clauses are in the simple present) After the wedding ceremony finishes, we are going to go to a party. (In the example above, the subordinate clause is in the simple present tense, and the main clause is in the future.) 2) If the dependent clause is in the past tense, the independent clause must also be in the past tense. Example: Before the wedding started, we got ready. (both clauses are in the simple past) **Note: When both clauses of a sentence are in the simple present, the sentence is stating a general fact or repeated action. Once, while Tyler was riding his bicycle, he fell off and broke his arm. Veronica drove him to the hospital. Her second son is Collin. He's eight. He was playing soccer when he ran into another player and sprained his ankle. Veronica drove him to the hospital. Her third son is Charlie. He's six. Charlie fell down the stairs and cut his head. Again, Veronica drove to the hospital. She asks her sons to be more careful and pay attention, but they are very energetic. She worries that they will hurt themselves. They run around the house, and she's afraid that one of them will crash into something and get a black eye. She's also afraid that one of them will trip over something and hurt his legs, arms, or head. The only time Veronica rests is when the boys are sleeping. Sometimes she wishes that she had daughters instead of sons! Not very energetic daughters, of course.
