    • Recycling and Waste Centres, theWaste-to-Energy Facility and theVancouver Landfill

    • Tipping fees and policies set toreduce waste and increaserecycling

    • Critical services provided in a fairand affordable manner

    • Facility locations minimize traveltime and GHG emissions

  • MAXIMIZING WASTE REDUCTION AND RECYCLING

    3

    • Priorities: Waste prevention, re-use and recycling prior to recovery

    • Recycling system includes public and private infrastructure

    • Recycling depots ahead of scales:• North Shore, Coquitlam• New United Boulevard and Central

Surrey facilities (under development)• 2021-2025 capital plan includes funding

to develop recycling depots at North Surrey and Langley

    Option Tonnage Small Load Waste

    GHG Benefit Example

    Interim Processing Strategy

    60,000 tonnes per year

Up to 20,000 tonnes CO2e per year

    Longer Term Option

    120,000 tonnes per year

Up to 85,000 tonnes CO2e per year

  • CLIMATE BENEFITS

    • GHG emission reduction targets won’t be achieved without new programs

    • Processing small load waste will result in reduced GHG emissions while planning for longer term

    • Cement plants, biomass plants, district energy systems, and forest industry use of alternative fuels reduce GHG emissions

  • CLIMATE ACTION COMMITTEE

    8

    • Supported use of alternative fuel to displace coal if possible, to yield greatest emissions benefit

    • Asked about emissions control systems and metals recovery process

    • Noted importance of considering transportation distances to processing facilities in the procurement process
