schemes of BCS
1. Outcomes relevant to patients
2. Systematic and explicit method
3. Recommendations:
1. Based in the best available evidence
2. Based on the quality of evidence and other factors,
such as patient values
3. Easier to understand
4. Linked to Cochrane reviews: easier

Accreditation-Guideline
1. Accreditation should be linked only to
evidence based recommendations
2. The link between accreditation and
guidelines will require:
• A dynamic guideline continously
updated
• To define priority areas for updating
A modular structure of the
guidelline will facilitate:
1. Its linkage to the corresponding
requirement for accreditation
2. To plan its updating
3. To desing its implementation and to
monitor its impact
Databases and cancer registries
1. Must be linked
2. A minimum data set should be
established in order to allow an
adequate monitoring
A question arises:
• Should the 5th Edition of the European
Guidelines change it aims and structure
because of the accreditation requirements?

Take home message
• Breast cancer services in the EU should be
consumer oriented.
• Let´s collect information, generate evidence
and accredit services with this aim.
“Start by doing what is necessary,
then what is possible,
and suddenly you will be doing the impossible”
