Around the world the incidence of International marriages has increased dramatically in recent years. we assume that International marriage statistics are 1.indicative of awider trend2.and that love3. romance and 4.family have indeed gone global.

As the example above have shown this does not just mean that an increasing number of people from different cultural, national, racial or linguistics backgrounds enter into an intimate relationship.

It also means that discourses of love, romance, gender, and sexuality have become enmeshed with cultural discourses.

Cultural is made relevant in the Emotional lives of many people and has come to inflect love and desire.

Love makes the world go around

In a blog post about an encounter between a japanese-Western couple and homeless Japanese man in Tokyo, Takahashi (2010) reports how the man takes exception to the English practice of saying ‘I Love You’ in romantic contexts.

They (= Western men) say ‘I love you, I love you’ and the (Japanese) women love it. It’s stupid. If love is there , you don’t have to say it.

Love and marriage have obviously different meanings in different cultures and the expression of love, romance, and desire differs across culture

The global romantic system is undergirded not only by material inequalities, but also by ideological ones where romantc love has come to be seen as morally superior to other forms of love and care.

Kojima (2001) analyses the mail order bride industry as a system for the global division of reproductive labour. Web –based personal ads typically include a closed list of attributes (age, physical measurements, ethnicity, religion, smoking status, and so on), plus a photo ,and two or more open-ended section where the advertiser can describe themselves and their desired other.

The first part, input, looks at what partners bring with them into the relationship. The second level, transformation one, looks at what happens when relationships begin to form (from stranger through acquaintance, on to the development of a relationship)--this would be the development stage. The Third level of transformation assumes relationships are formed or forming and problems of some sort arise. What does/can the couple or the friends do to resolve the differences? This would be related to the maintenance stage. "Output" variables might include things like a "third culture," relational satisfaction, the ethnicity of children, effects on society, etc.
