INTERCHANGE OF STATES
The three states of matter can be changed by heating and cooling and during
this processfreezing, melting, evaporation and condensationprocesses take
place.
We will learn all the four process one by one:
Freezing– The process of a liquid changing into its solid state on cooling is
known as freezing.
Melting – The process of a solid changing into a liquid on heating is known as
melting.
Evaporation– The process of a liquid changing into its gaseous state on heating
is called evaporation.
Condensation – The process of a gas changing into its liquid state on cooling is
called condensation.

Solution – The solute and the solvent together
solute + solvent = solution
solute + solvent = solution
Substances that dissolve in water are called
For example - sugar and salt
Substances that do not dissolve in water are
For example – pebbles , husk etc.

Hydrogen and oxygen
are two gases. They
combine together to
make water which is

Substances that dissolve in water are called soluble substances.
Substances that do not dissolve in water are substances.

SOLUTION
Gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxidealso dissolve in water. Aquatic
animals such as fish, dolphins and crabs breathe in oxygendissolved in water
and breathe out carbon dioxide. Aquaticplants use carbon dioxidedissolved in
water for the process of photosynthesis
Note:
1. If too much salt is dissolved in water, nothing would sink in
it. The water in the ‘Dead Sea’ is so salty that a person cannot
drown in it.
2. Oil and petrol are liquids that do not dissolve in water. They
are lighter than water and float on water.
3. Joseph B Priestly invented soda water. He mixed water with
fixed air (carbon-dioxide), and found that the water had a
pleasant taste. He called this soda water.
ASSIGNMENT
I. Answer the following questions:
Q1.) Define: (a) Solute (b) Solvent (c) Solution
Q2.) Differentiate between evaporation and condensation
II. (A) Give the scientific terms for the following:
1. Ice changing into water.
2. Water vapour changing into water.
3. Water changing into ice.
4. Water changing into water vapour.
(B Rishabh has made a glass of ORS by using salt, sugar and water.
Now choose the correct answer from the words given in the bracket below:
