I. INTRODUCTION
In past few years, home automation, remote control
and monitoring systems have seen a rapid growth in
terms of technology. A review of these systems
based on existing technologies and also proposes a
GSM based controlling and remote monitoring
system [1]. This system has simple features
designed with the objective of minimum power
consumption using sensors for controlling lights,
fans and other appliances which are controlled via
SMS using a GSM module [5]. Using the public
GSM networks, a home automation system has been
proposed, designed, implemented and tested. The
design of a standalone microcontroller that can
monitor and control home appliances locally using
built-in input and output peripherals is presented.
Remotely, the system allows the home owner
monitoring and controlling the house appliances via
the mobile phone set by sending codes in the form
of SMS messages and receiving the appliances
status. The GSM modem provides the
communication media between the homeowner and
the system by means of SMS messages [6].
This system mainly focuses on the controlling of
home appliances remotely and providing security
when the user is away from the place. The system is
SMS based and uses wireless technology to
revolutionize the standards of living. This system
provides ideal solution to the problems faced by
home owners in daily life. The system is wireless
therefore more adaptable and cost-effective [6]. The
HACS system provides security against intrusion as
well as automates various home appliances using
SMS [6].
The paper is organized as follows. Section II details
the proposed system architecture. Section III
discusses hardware design of proposed system.
Section IV describes results and in Section V
discusses on the conclusion.
II. SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE
If homeowner forgot to turn OFF lights (any
electrical equipment), gas or water valve then either
he has to come back and turn OFF the appliances or
he has to tell neighbours to turn OFF the appliances.
It’s very time consuming. And for some reasons
both conditions are not possible then it causes
power consumption. Sometimes power is cut-OFF
from MSEB or load shedding is going on and
homeowner forgot to turn OFF the switches. When
power supply is turn ON from MSEB, in the
absence of homeowner, wasting of power supply
takes place. We have to stop power consumptions
like this.
As shown in Fig 1, with the help of GSM based
system we can overcome the above disadvantages.
We can monitor and control the home appliances. If
anyone appliance remained ON, this system will
inform us about that appliance. It will also give us
status of all the appliances. If homeowner want to
turn ON any appliance anytime, it’s possible with
the help of this system [6]. Home automation is
adopted for reasons of ease, security and energy
efficiency. Home automation may include
centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating,
ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, and
other systems, to provide improved convenience,
comfort.

III. THE HARDWARE DESIGN
A.SENSORS
1. LPG SENSOR
High sensitivity to LPG, iso-butane, propane Small
sensitivity to alcohol, smoke, fast response Stable
and long life Simple drive circuit are the important
Features of LPG Sensor. We recommend that
calibration of the detector in terms of fo 1000ppm
of LPG concentration in air. When accurately
measuring, the proper alarm point. For the gas
detector should be determined after considering the
temperature and humidity influence. They are used
in gas leakage detecting equipments in family and
industry, are suitable for detecting of LPG, iso-
butane, propane. This sensor has a high sensitivity
and fast response.
Structure of MQ-6 gas sensor is shown as Fig 2,
sensor composed by micro AL2O3 ceramic tube,
Tin Dioxide (SnO2) sensitive layer, measuring
electrode and heater are fixed into a crust made by
plastic and stainless steel net. The heater provides
necessary work conditions for work of sensitive
component. The enveloped MQ- 6 have 6 pin,4 of
them are used to fetch signals, and other 2 are used
for providing heating current.

Sensitivity Characteristics:
Fig.3 shows the typical sensitivity characteristics of
the MQ-6, ordinate means resistance ratio of the
sensor characteristics. Ordinate means resistance
ratio (Rs/Ro), abscissa is concentration of gases. Rs
means of the sensor (Rs/Ro), Rs means resistance in
different gases; Ro means resistance of sensor in
1000ppm LPG. All tests are under standard test
conditions.

2. LIGHT SENSOR
LDRs or Light Dependent Resistors as shown in
Fig.4 are very useful especially in Light /dark
sensor circuits.

Normally the resistance of an LDR is very high,
sometimes as high as 1000 000 ohms, but when
they are illuminated with light resistance drops
dramatically. Fig.5 shows the typical electrical
characteristics of the LDR.

3. DOOR SWITCH
Safety Door Switches detect when mechanical
guards or covers are closed. They are available in
models using either mechanical or non-contact
detection, and operation with special keys or
actuators is possible [3]. Door switches are as
shown in Fig 6.
Fig.6 Door Switch
IV RESULTS
Firstly if we want status of our used devices, send a
message “CHECK” to GSM modem. Then GSM
Sends back the status of all the devices to our
mobile as shown in Fig 7.
When LDR’s resistance decreases in dark, then bulb
glows ON, if we want to turn OFF the bulb then
send a message “BOFF” to mobile through GSM
modem. If we want to switch ON the bulb then send
a message “BON” to the GSM modem as shown in
Fig.8.When a gas leakage happens then resistance
of gas sensor increases up to 255, and then GSM
modem sends message on our mobile that “Gas
leakage” as shown in Fig.9.
Fig.7 All Devices Status
Check fan’s status directly on power supply pin to
microcontroller. If the voltage 0, it indicates that fan
is off. If we want to turn ON the fan, send
message“FON” to GSM modem through mobile &
for turn OFF the fan send message “FOFF” to GSM
modem as shown in Fig.10. Door switch gives the
status of door. It will tell us that the door is close or
open.

IV. CONCLUSION
GSM based security system helps in safe guarding
life and property. It is compact in size, hence
beneficial for places with shortage of space. The
cost of the system is cheap. This system is accurate
and gives precise results. The system can be
reprogrammed as it makes the use of
reprogrammable microcontroller.
