The evolution of computer technology occurs at an unprecedented rate, empowering organizations today to work smarter than ever before. According to Moore’s Law, the number of transistors that can be placed on a chip doubles every two years. Hence, every couple of years, microprocessor-computing power is significantly enhanced, along with other components, such as security and productivity.

It is possible for organizations today to be excessively cost-conscious, especially when they look at their IT department micro perspective.

Any IT supported organization, which spans all enterprises today, wants and needs to deliver superior value to the company, but when IT focuses on calculating costs rather than delivering business value, it can end up shortchanging the organization. This micro focus raises organizational costs while depriving the company of the business value delivered by wise IT investments.

There are two primary reasons to upgrade - technological and business. The key objectives of a PC refresh for any enterprise would be:

1. Increase in failure rates as components reach the end of their “design life”

2. The rising cost of supporting older PCs

3. Independent software developers phase out support for applications installed on older OSs. Network and printer drivers are also affected. As organizations purchase new peripherals, it will become more difficult to find supported drivers for PCs with older OSs

4. The inability of older hardware to support newer software. More complex applications are demanding faster processors, further supporting the need for a PC refresh

5. Increased security of newer OS

6. The need for Mobility. Businesses today need a mobile workforce which research has shows increases user productivity by up to 41%.

7. Productivity and application enhancement

8. Increased productivity due to operating system improvements

9. Increased productivity due to new or improved applications

10. Improved network security and device management

11. Better end-user and customer satisfaction

12. Reduced support calls balanced against costs

13. Utilize new technologies where strong business needs exist

Keeping these factors in mind, enterprises would be much better served and enjoy a more cost-effective solution by acquiring newer, more capable systems rather than extending PC refresh cycles.

Shorter PC Refresh CyclesHigh on productivity. Low on TCO.

~ Intel processor numbers are not a measure of performance. Processor numbers differentiate features within each processor family, not across different processor families. See http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/ for details.

1 Performance based on select industry benchmarks, game titles, and multimedia creation applications. Actual performance may vary. See www.intel.com/performance/desktop/extreme/ for additional information.

2 Intel® Turbo Boost technology requires a PC with a processor with Intel Turbo Boost capability. Intel Turbo Boost performance varies depending on hardware, software and overall system configuration. Check with your PC manufacturer on whether your system delivers Intel Turbo

Boost technology. See www.intel.com/technology/turboboost for more information.

3 Intel® Hyper-Threading technology (Intel® HT technology) requires a computer system with a processor supporting Intel HT Technology and an Intel HT technology-enabled chipset, BIOS, and operating system. Performance will vary depending on the specific hardware and software

you use. For more information including details on which processors support Intel HT technology, see www.intel.com/info/hyperthreading.

4 Performance measure based on SiSoftware* Sandra* 2009 memory test, comparing the pre-production Intel® Core™ i7 processor to the Intel® Core™2 Extreme processor QX9770.

5 Based on SPECint_rate_base2006* scores. Results have been based on internal Intel analysis and are provided for informational purposes only. Any difference in system hardware or software design or configuration may affect actual performance. See

www.intel.com/performance/desktop/extreme/index.htm for additional information.

6 Performance based on ImTOO* v1.0.92 build 0704 and Adobe* Premiere Elements 4 test results, comparing Intel® Core™ i7 processor to the Intel® Core™2 processor Q9650 and Q9450. Actual performance may vary. See www.intel.com/performance/desktop/index.htm for more

information.

7 Intel® Active Management Technology (Intel® AMT) requires the computer system to have an Intel® AMT-enabled chipset, network hardware and software, as well as connection with a power source and a corporate network connection. Setup requires configuration by the purchaser

and may require scripting with the management console or further integration into existing security frameworks to enable certain functionality. It may also require modifications of implementation of new business processes. With regard to notebooks, Intel AMT may not be available

or certain capabilities may be limited over a host OS-based VPN or when connecting wirelessly, on battery power, sleeping, hibernating or powered off. For more information, see www.intel.com/technology/platform-technology/intel-amt/.

8 Up to 5x better performance with optional Intel® Next-Gen Wireless-N technology enabled by 2x3 Draft N implementations with 2 spatial streams. Actual results may vary based on your specific hardware, connection rate, site conditions, and software configurations. See

www.intel.com/performance/mobile/index.htm for more information. Also requires a Connect with Intel® Centrino® processor technology certified wireless n access point. Wireless n access points without the Connect with Intel® Centrino® processor technology identifier may require

additional firmware for increased performance results. Check with your PC and access point manufacturer for details.

9 System performance, battery life, power savings, high-definition quality, video playback, wireless performance, and functionality will vary depending on your specific operating system, hardware, chipset, connection rate, site conditions, and software configurations. References to

enhanced performance including wireless refer to comparisons with previous generation Intel technologies. Wireless connectivity and some features may require you to purchase additional software, services or external hardware. Availability of public wireless LAN access points is

limited. Wireless functionality may vary by country and some hotspots may not support Linux-based Intel® Centrino® processor technology systems. See www.intel.com/products/centrino/index.htm and www.intel.com/performance/mobile/benchmarks.htm for more information on

performance, wireless, power savings and energy efficiency.

10 Intel® Stable Image Platform Program (Intel® SIPP) - Check with your PC vendor for availability of platforms that meet SIPP guidelines.

11 Performance gain claim based on TPC-E Benchmark running Intel® Xeon® processor X7350-based platform vs. Intel® Xeon® processor X7460-based platform results September 2008; configuration details above. Reduced Platform power claim based on vConsolidate Benchmark on

VMware ESX Server results; configuration details above. Comparison between Intel® Xeon® Processor 7400 and 7300 Series based on vConsolidate benchmark result measured on VMware ESX Server v3.5.0 by Intel Corporation in September 2008.

12 Virtualization performance gain claim based on vConsolidate benchmark running Intel Xeon processor 7350 vs. Intel Xeon processor 7460 results September 2008; configuration details above.

13 Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT), Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel® TXT), and Intel® 64 architecture require a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, enabling software and/or operating system, device drivers and applications designed for these features.

Performance will vary depending on your configuration. Contact your vendor for more information.

14 64-bit computing on Intel® architecture requires a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, operating system, device drivers, and applications enabled for Intel® 64 architecture. Processors will not operate (including 32-bit operation) without an Intel 64 architecture-enabled

BIOS. Performance will vary depending on your hardware and software configurations. Consult with your system vendor for more information.

15 Intel® vPro™ processor technology in 2007 DASH implementation is based on draft DASH 1.0 specifications.

16 Enabling Execute Disable Bit functionality requires a PC with a processor with Execute Disable Bit capability and a supporting operating system. Check with your PC manufacturer on whether your system delivers Execute Disable Bit functionality.

Energy prices are continually rising, which translate to a corresponding increase in the

energy costs associated with an organization’s IT assets. IT buyers will need to consider

computing platforms that can provide higher performance levels at the same or lower

energy envelopes.

‡Taking SYSmark* 2007 Preview to represent an accurate mirror of an end user’s real-life

activities, organizations can adopt this workload in an energy efficient performance

measurement methodology. The results of this methodology should report out delivered

performance at a given level of energy cost, communicating both performance and the

energy cost of delivering that performance.
