Academic Integrity across
Europe and Beyond
Discussion
this room
At Your Institution…• Who decides whether a student is guilty of an academic
integrity breach?
– Plagiarism, inappropriate collusion, exam cheating,…
• Who decides on the penalty applied to students for an academic integrity breach?
At Your Institution…• What would happen if a student was found guilty of
plagiarism in their assignment or final project/dissertation?
• Is there someone a teacher can ask for an advice?
What Would You Do?• Written exam
• Any communication is explicitly forbidden
• You catch Alice showing her exam to Bob
• Bob is copying from Alice’s exam
What Would You Do?• Written exam
• Any communication was explicitly forbidden
• You don’t notice any communication or cheating during the exam
• When you are correcting the tests, you find out that two tests contain same mistakes
• You know that their authors sit next to each other
What Would You Do?• Team project (three students)
• After turn in the project:
– You accidently find out that one student didn‘t participate in the project
– The other two did his part instead of him because they didn’t want to get worse evaluation
What Would You Do?• Final thesis (bachelor or master) that you are supervising
• Student has already officially turned in his thesis
• The thesis is checked by an anti-plagiarism system
• The system notifies you about 20% match in the thesis
• You can see that all copied paragraphs are properly cited
– except for few sentences without any source
Should it Be Unified?• Should be the approaches in such situations unified in some
extent?
European Network for Academic Integrity
Vission, current and future steps
European Network for Academic Integrity

• Student effort in Europe is unified by ECTS
• Absolutely no unification in matters of academic integrity
• Huge difference between countries of Europe
• Only few European universities are members of ICAI
• (Probably) lack of confidence of European authorities/academics in “people behind the ocean”
