I. Brief History of the Company
Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) was
established on November 28, 1928, by an act of the Philippine
legislature and approved by then Governor-General Henry L.
Stimson by means of a merger of four telephone companies under
operation of the American telephone company GTE. Known as Act
3436, the bill granted PLDT a 50-year charter and the right to
establish a Philippine telephone network linking major points
nationwide. However, PLDT had to meet a 40-day deadline to start
implementing the network, which would be implemented over a
period of one to four years.
By the 1930s, PLDT had an expansive fixed-line network and
for the first time linked the Philippines to the outside world
via radiotelephone services, connecting the Philippines to the
United States and other parts of the world.
Telephone service in the Philippines was interrupted due to
World War II. At the end of the war, the Philippines'
communications infrastructure was in ruins. U.S. military
authorities eventually handed over the remains of the
communications infrastructure to PLDT in 1947, and with the help
of massive U.S. aid to the Philippines during the 1940s and
1950s, PLDT recovered so quickly that its telephone subscribers
outpaced that of pre-war levels by 1953.
On December 20, 1967, a group of Filipino entrepreneurs and
businessmen led by Ramon Cojuangco took control of PLDT after
buying its shares from the American telecommunications company
GTE. The group took control of PLDT's management on January 1,
1968, with the election of Gregorio S. Licaros and Cojuangco as
chairman and president of PLDT respectively. A few months later,
PLDT's main office in Makati City (known today as the Ramon
Cojuangco Building) was opened, and PLDT's expansion programs
begin, hoping to bring reliable telephone services to the rural
areas.
PLDT was permitted to operate during Martial Law. During the
1970s, PLDT was nationalized by the government of then President
Ferdinand Marcos and in 1981, in compliance of then existing
policy of the Philippine government to integrate the Philippine
telecommunications industry purchased substantially all of the
assets and liabilities of Republic Telephone Company, becoming
the country's telephone monopoly. Under this monopoly, service
Page 3 of 27
expansion was severely curtailed or practically nonexistent. In
the Martial Law years people would apply for phone service only
to wait for years and years on end behind an impossibly long
application backlog. It is not unheard of for people and small
businesses back then to barter for a single telephone line in the
black market for tens of thousands of pesos. The incumbent Prime
Minister Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore referred to the situation when
visiting the Philippines during the term of President Fidel V.
Ramos. He said, albeit in jest, “In the Philippines 95% of the
population has no telephone, while the remaining 5% are waiting
for that dial tone.”
In 1986, after President Marcos was overthrown, the company
was re-privatized as Ramon's son, Antonio "Tonyboy" Cojuangco
assumed post as PLDT chief. By 1995, with the passage of the
Telecommunications Act and the subsequent deregulation of the
Philippine telecommunications industry, the company has been de-
monopolized. Later that year, Hong Kong-based First Pacific
Company Ltd. acquired a 17.5% stake in PLDT making it the
majority owner of the conglomerate. The company's CEO Manuel V.
Pangilinan became the new conglomerate's President replacing
Cojuangco, who assumed post as Chairman until 2004, when
Pangilinan became his successor.

PLDT’s Corporate Office is currently located at Ramon
Cojuangco Building, Makati Ave. corner Ayala Ave., Legaspi
Village, Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines 1200.
II. Summary of the OJT Experience
Our first day of training consisted of our OJT supervisor
explaining the different services of PLDT provided by our
division. We were part of the Router Team of the ESRM Division of
PLDT. It was our responsibility to troubleshoot, configure, and
sometimes install routers depending on the client. After a brief
refresher course on basic router configuration, they made us
practice on spare routers in the office. During the following
days if there was a client that needed a router installation, we
were the ones to apply basic router configuration including
assigning the IP address, setting the router up for remote
access, and the basic route to Central Office (CO). After more
Page 5 of 27
time, we were assigned to make connectivity tests called ‘Test
OK’ or ‘TOK.’ TOKs’ were ping tests by remotely accessing the
assigned router to the client router to verify connectivity and
are requested by calling our division. Sometimes, if there is no
connectivity between the routers, we will troubleshoot the router
so that full connectivity is achieved. We also tested some
routers to confirm that they are in working condition.
The Router Team of Division ESRM is in charge of the
configuration, installation, and troubleshooting of routers.
There are different brands of routers that are being used which
are Cisco, Huawei, and Tellabs. Cisco routers were the most easy
to use because we were familiar with using them. Tellabs routers
were easy to pick-up because its configuration commands were
similar to Cisco commands. Huawei were the most difficult to
understand because the commands are different from anything else.
The most used routers were Cisco and routers can either be
provided by the client or by PLDT. All of us interacted with the
clients to provide the needed service. The Router Team is also

part of company projects and sometimes assists the other division
if they can. They utilize CLI screenshots to email to the clients
to prove connectivity.
The employees are assigned to projects and according to those
projects they need to deal with communicating with the clients.
Employees with the higher position can assign lower position
employees to certain projects. ESRM has different teams and
depending on the project more than one team can be assigned to
it. Teams and divisions work together to provide the best
service. Some higher level employees can make direct hires while
others can only make recommendations.
PLDT can help build a strong career in data communications and
network management. The tasks performed by the OJT required basic
networking knowledge. PLDT can also offer sponsorship for
certifications like CCNA and ITIL certifications
The OJT trainees in PLDT are briefed about the company’s services
and then assessed on their knowledge regarding duties that will
be assigned to them.

I find it that the PLDT work environment is a good place to work
without much restriction about the personal work space of the
employees. The location of the office is easily reached whether
commuting or not. The equipment in use is modern and not outdated
and is always in good working condition. The employees are really
helpful when you ask for help. The facilities also include a
canteen, clinic, and basketball court for employee use. In
general, I find that PLDT has a suitable work environment and the
facilities are nice to work in.
Regular duties and responsibilities of an OJT Trainee
in PLDT ESRM Division:
To accept phone calls from our designated work
area and perform the appropriate task for the
situation.

To ensure complete client connectivity by helping
troubleshoot client connections that is currently
down.
To apply basic router configurations before router
installation at client sites.
III. Assessment of the OJT Program
Explaining about personal learning, I have learned and
realized that whatever, where ever you work one always needs to
have positive attitude for better performance, this helps to gain
self-confidence. I have learned to be extrovert; communicative to
the co-workers, earlier, as I was a bit introvert being less open
communicative with others. I have realized that one should trust
the team members as trust influence your involvement and maintain
the creativity within the team members. While working in team, I
also came to realize one factor which maintains the team
chemistry and combined effort is mutual respect among members.
At the work environment, I got a good opportunity to see how
people work in team and how they put their synergized effort for
better outcome. I learned from my supervisor that if you are at
Page 9 of 27
work, you should learn to respect client’s time so I learned to
be punctual.
I develop strong work ethics from my training, which is very
important for an employee, which also define their interest in
their work along with their skills. I also learned to depend on
others, as it is very important for a team member to depend on
other team member, to successfully accomplish assign goal. In my
earlier stage of training, I was to extend self-dependent on
towards my work , and as result I tried to do every task without
coordinating with team members others, but later I realized how
wrong I was.
At PLDT, I found everyone to be honest, polite along with
good work ethics. All my knowledge that I have learned at class
turned out to be managerial tools and now I have learned to use
these tools efficiently and effectively as per requirement.
I believe my experience at PLDT will surely guide me in my
future career. I am grateful and proud to have trained at a very
good company and well-known like PLDT.
There are a lot of benefits and advantages that I have
acquired when I had my training at PLDT. The following are the
benefits and advantages:
Gain work experience and transferable skills
Be able to experience a prospective career path
Gain practical experience, by applying methods and theories
learned in classes
Network with professionals in my field, for references and
future job opportunities
Develop new skills and refine others
Gain confidence in my abilities
I believe that life is a learning experience and being able
to understand my own strengths and weaknesses can help me to be a
better individual in my future career that I will choose to do.
Knowing myself and what I can do, can help me to understand and
overcome my weaknesses.
One of my greatest strengths at work that I possess would be
my positive mindset towards my work. When I am assigned certain
task or when I am performing a task, I always perform with a
positive attitude, which boost up my confidence level and
increases my productivity. I think I have always considered about
myself is that, I am a human being and no one is perfect. But I
always believe with my positive mindset that one can be nearly
perfect, for which one should be always motivated and interested
inconstantly improving one’s skill and knowledge.
