The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research educational activities that complement other formal training programs in the mission areas of the NIH Institutes and Centers. The overall goal of this NHLBI R25 program is to support integrated programs thatprovide courses for skills development and hands-onresearch experience in blood research science lasting up to six months. The intent of this program is to increase the number and skill sets of investigators who enter the field of blood research and to provide specialized training that is not readily available at every academic institution.

Eligible participants will be graduate students, medical students, postdoctoral fellows, or early career faculty. This short-term intensive education experiences program will be ideal for an investigator who must learn new techniques that are not offered at his/her home institution in order to further their research, but who cannot feasibly move to a new institution and begin a new fellowship.

Qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens or have been granted permanent U.S. residency.

The U of MN program can facilitate training for up to three applicants per year. The length of the training will be determined by the applicant’s educational goals and the amount of their time available to commit to the program.

Trainees will be expected to have measureable outcomes from this experience and will be asked to develop goals as part of the training process.

Depending upon the individual trainee’s needs, temporary housing can be arranged and stipends may be available. Travel to a relevant national meeting to present anabstract derived from the training may also be provided.

Who is eligibleto participate?

What type of trainingis being offered?

How many trainees can be accommodated?

What else should I know about this opportunity?

Six modules have been designed to meet theneeds of this program:

1) Manufacturing of Clinical Cell Therapies2) Preservation of Cells3) Hematopoietic Stem Cells4) Immunotherapy5) Transfusion Medicine6) Blood and Marrow-Derived Stem Cells for Non-Hematological Diseases

Program scholars have enjoyedtouring the University of MinnesotaHealth Apheresis Unit, the AmericanRed Cross North Central Blood Services, and the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match headquarters. Scholars are asked for input so training can be customized to their interests.

“The program has given me a new perspective onthe impact of cellular therapies and the opportunityto see facilities that operate at points along the celltherapy pipeline.” - Program Participant
