Since its foundation in 1927 it has concentrated on the production, refinement and sales of cheese. Today, Hochland also supplies the food industry and catering sector with product concepts especially developed for customers in all desired forms. The group offers all major cheese varieties to national and international markets. Hochland cheese is sold in over 30 countries and its name is synonymous with quality and ongoing product innovation. With a workforce of more than 4,200 at 11 productions sites, Hochland generated a turnover of roughly 1.3 billion Euro in 2014, which makes the group one of the largest manufacturers and refiners of cheese in Europe. Hochland began doing business in Eastern Europe early on – and was instantly successful. In Poland, Romania and Russia, Hochland is market leader in the field of processed cheese and cream cheese and the best-known cheese brand in all relevant segments. Having operated in Poland since 1990, the group founded Hochland Polska Sp. z o.o. in 1993 and in 1995 put its own production plant into operation in Kazmierz, near Poznan. Together with the sites of Baranowo and Wegrów, Hochland today has three plants in the country which manufacture processed cheese, soft cheese, cream cheese, hard cheese and sliced cheese. CHALLENGE Constantly seeking to expand its international presence, Hochland started to deliver its products to the South African market in 2014. With the aim of establishing a reliable and efficient supply chain from its Polish production sites to this country, the company was looking for an international logistics partner to provide high-quality temperature- controlled seafreight transport on a door-to-port service level. Africa being a new destination for Hochland, the ideal logistics provider needed to have extensive experience in this particular region and, in addition, to offer a global network with sufficient shipping capacity. Further key factors were the ability to handle temperature- and time-sensitive food shipments both by seafreight (for regular traffic) and airfreight (in case of urgent ad-hoc traffic). For Hochland, a market leader in the field of processed cheese products, Kuehne + Nagel designed and implemented a forwarding solution, including seafreight and airfreight shipments, to establish a reliable and efficient supply chain from its Polish production sites to the South African consumer market.
