TWO MEN allegedly killed aman by attacking him with asharp weapon at Swargate BusDepot area during an attemptto rob him.

Police identified the de-ceased as Nagesh Dagadu Gund(37), a resident of Tuljapur inOsmanabad district. His friendKamlakar Ghodke (29) lodgedan FIR in the case at Swargate po-lice station.

Assistant Police InspectorAmol Rasal said Gund, whoworks as a driver for private vehicles, came to Pune from

Osmanabad for his work.The complainant said he was

about to pick Gund up fromSwargate area on Thursdaynight, but two people attackedhim around 11.15 pm. Police saidthe assailants wanted to rob him, but when Gund resisted,they attacked him with a sharpweapon, and fled the spot, leav-ing him injured.

A police team took Gund toSassoon Hospital after Ghodkeinformed them, but he died dur-ing treatment.

Two unidentified personshave been booked under rele-vant sections of the Indian PenalCode, and a search to ascertaintheir identities is on.

DOCTORS HAVE urged peoplenot to unnecessarily undergoexpensive chest CT scans anduse them as a screening tool todetect Covid-19.

“A CT chest scan has been in-creasingly used as one ofthe firstinvestigations of diagnosis forCovid-19. Unfortunately, thereare limitations as CT findings —though sensitive — are not spe-cific for Covid-19,” said DrJitendra Oswal, deputy medicaldirector of Bharati Hospital.

Antigen and RT-PCR testsare freely available and are thegold standard for diagnosis ofCovid-19, he said. “For sometime now, people have been un-dergoing CT scans on the rec-ommendation of their generalpractitioners. The scan should

be limited to diagnosing Covid-19 only in certain patients,”Oswal added.

Various other pathogens andnon-infectious causes can alsolead to similar CT findings as seenin Covid-19 pneumonia, accord-ing to Dr Oswal, who urged thata chest CT should not be used asa screening tool for Covid-19.

There are at least 1.81 lakhCovid-19 cases in Pune district, ofwhich 31,886 are active caseswhile the death toll is 4,222.

Dr Sujata Rege, an infectiousdiseases consultant at BharatiHospital, said it had become a

cause for concern as anyone withfever was being recommended aCT scan as the first modality fordetecting Covid-19. Not only arethe tests expensive but there is ex-posure to radiation, experts said.

“Also, this may delay the di-agnosis,” Rege said and pointedout that at the Bharati Coviddedicated hospital, where morethan 2,000 patients have beentreated since April, the protocolwas towards a judicious use ofthe chest CT scan.

Patients who are suspectedCovid-19 cases based on clinicallaboratory epidemiological andX-ray findings but test negativeon consecutive RT PCR should geta chest CT done, Oswal said. Iftypical findings ofbilateral, basaland peripheral ground glassinginfiltrates are seen, these patientsneed to be isolated despite a neg-ative PCR report, he added.

Mangeshkar Hospital, saidCovid-19 starts as an upper res-piratory infection and then goeson to involve the lower respira-tory tract — so in select cases, ifthe PCR is negative after the fifthday of illness and is a clinicallysuspected Covid case — then achest CT scan can be a sensitivetool to diagnose.

Meanwhile, a report in theMay edition of the Journal ofAssociation ofPhysicians of Indiaexperts said even if the chest CTmight be a diagnostic tool withhigh sensitivity, RT-PCR still re-mains the gold standard diagnos-tic test for Covid-19.

According to experts likeOswal, a chest CT can also be usedin hospitalised patients with se-vere Covid-19 disease for diag-nosing sequelae like fibrosis andsecondary infections. There is aneed to judiciously use availableresources and provide appropri-ate timely care, Oswal said.

THE CRIME Branch of Pune CityPolice arrested a Tanzanian na-tional with possession ofcocaineworth Rs 3.3 lakh on Friday.

Police identified the ac-cused as James Hillary Ausi(27), native of Mwanza inTanzania, who is currently re-siding at Kondhwa Budruk.

Police inspector Vijay Tikoleand assistant inspector BapuRaykar of the Anti-NarcoticsCell of the crime branch nabbed

James on the Kondhwa-Yevalewadi Road while he wason his two-wheeler.

Fifty five grams of cocainewere recovered from him, po-lice said. Along with this, hiscell phone and a two-wheelerwere also seized. He was ar-rested under the NarcoticDrugs and PsychotropicSubstances (NDPS) Act. An FIRin the case was lodged atKondhwa police station. Policeare investigating to find outwhere James procured the co-caine and to whom he wasplanning to sell it.
