Seminar Overview
Seminar Leader’ s Profile
Temporary overvoltages are common to power networks and systems. However, it is paramount for electrical power
engineers to reduce the number of outages and preserve the continuity of electricity service and supply. It is therefore
necessary to direct special attention towards protection of transmission lines, substations, power plant and equipment
from the major causes of overvoltages in power networks and systems such as lightning and switching overvoltages.
This seminar provides attendees with an overall understanding of issues or damages that overvoltages on the system
may cause to plant and equipment, as well as a practical appreciation of the various methodologies employed to
reduce such damages. This seminar will cover important aspects relating to insulation coordination including
principles of insulation coordination, methodologies used, identifying insulation strength, causes of overvoltages and
mitigation of hazardous overvoltages. Further, this seminar will also focus on numerical analysis, modelling and
implementing insulation coordination steps and techniques, which involves application of a set of quantitative
procedures including:
¨ Analysis and modelling of the operating voltage under normal conditions
¨ Selection of rated impulse withstand voltage of plant and equipment
¨ Calculation and modelling of temporary overvoltages, switching overvoltages and lightning overvoltages
using empirical calculations and transient software modelling
¨ Design, location, and selection of surge arrestors
¨ Mitigation methodology including shielding of overhead lines and substations
Hence, achieving the best possible technical and economical design for protection of persons and equipment
Malcolm is currently a Technical Principal at SMEC (Snowy Mountains Engineering Corpora-tion). He is a recognised specialist in Substation Design, Insulation Co-ordination and Earthing of Power Systems, both in Australia and internationally. Malcolm provides post-graduate professional development training on topics associated with power systems, with specific reference to Substation Design.
With over 40 years working experience in the electricity transmission and distribution industries. During this time , Malcolm has personally investigated and managed the risks as-sociated with substation design, insulation co-ordination, earthing, lightning protection and interference. He has been involved in design, mitigation and implementation of insulation co-ordination schemes associated with Australia ’ s electricity transmission and distribution networks. Malcolm has held various responsible positions in the Electrical Engineering discipline, consulting, design, project management, maintenance of power systems and has a special interest in studies for network connections, insulation co-ordination, power system augmentations, detail design, layout and refurbishments, covering primary, secondary and protection systems.
Malcolm has worked on projects for the power generation, transmission, distribution, traction, mining and heavy industries in a variety of commercial project and design management roles, with primary responsibility for substation design, installation and commissioning and has practical knowledge and experience working with LV, HV to EHV systems, renewables and switchgear systems, with extensive experience in electrical substation design, protection systems, HV cabling designs, transformers, NER/X ’ s , capacitor banks and reactors, PLC ’ s , frequency drives and large motor control systems.
Malcolm is a Member of the Institute of Engineers Australia, a Chartered Professional Engineer, a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland. He holds a Master of Engineering Science (Power Supply Engineering).
¨ Principals and Methodology of Insulation Co-ordination
¨ Essentials of Insulation, an overview of Testing of
Plant and Equipment ¨ Impact of Overvoltages caused by Lightning,
Switching and other mechanisms ¨ Characteristics of various components of
Overvoltages ¨ Shielding and Protection of Overhead Transmission
Lines and Substations ¨ Travelling Waves and Transients ¨ Surge Protection and Selection of Surge Diverters ¨ Insulation Coordination Transient Modelling- with
modelling examples ¨ Example calculations
