The third piece in this group of five, Empress Of The Pagodas (Laideronnette, Impératrice Des Pagados), was inspired by the tale written by Madame d’Aulnoy and tells the story of an ugly girl surrounded by little statues on pagodas who come to life and play music as their Empress enters the water to bathe. She has only a green serpent as a friend. In the original story, the two are eventually transformed into a beautiful princess and handsome prince. In the score, Ravel writes above the music, “All of a sudden, the miniature porcelain nodding dolls began to sing and play instruments; some had lutes made of walnuts some viols made from almond shells, because the instruments had to be accommodated to their size.” The original suite was written for four-hand piano for the children of family friends. The orchestration, which was done the following year, remains the most frequently heard today. Ravel uses the pentaton- ic scale to evoke the oriental flavors as well as using a dominance of quartal melodic and harmonic writing. Students will love the techniques he used for coloristic effects. Tremolandos are abundant and dynamics are woven throughout. Phrasing will be easily attained with the specific hairpin crescendo/ diminuendo directions. A recording of this piece can be downloaded at www.kendormusic.com. DEBORAH BAKER MONDAY Deborah Baker Monday has 34 years of string teaching and conducting experience which is reflected in her well-crafted compositions and arrangements.
