Introduction Definition of Terms

Thank you for your purchase of the KrellKAV-300r Stereo Receiver with TheaterThroughput. The KAV-300r gives the audio-phile an exceptional-sounding, two-channelmusic system in a convenient package that canstand alone or easily be integrated into a multi-component system. The tuner combines strongreception and quality sound with transparentfunctioning and can be operated through thefront panel or the remote. Six programmabletuner presets allow instant selection of yourfavorite AM or FM stations. The FM mute andhigh frequency blend features also let you con-trol background and between-station noisewhen selecting FM stations with weaker broad-cast signals.

The Theater Throughput feature simplifies theintegration of an audio/video surround soundprocessor into your system. The remote pro-vides convenient operation of-the KAV-300rand other Krell KAV components.

This owner’s reference manual contains impor-tant information on placement, installation, andoperation of the KAV-300r. Please read thisinformation carefully. A thorough understandingof these details will help ensure satisfactoryoperation and long life for your KAV-300r andrelated system components.

Following are the definitions of key terms usedin your owner’s reference manual.

CONFIGURATIONS

Theater ThroughputTheater Throughput is a Krell configuration optionthat allows the signal from a surround preamp/pro-cessor to pass through a Krell preamplifier or inte-grated amplifier with no gain, for integrated vol-ume and balance management of Krell hometheater systems.

INPUT AND OUTPUT CONNECTIONS

BalancedA symmetrical input or output circuit that hasequal impedance from both input terminals to acommon ground reference point. The industrystandard for professional and sound recordinginstallations, balanced connections have 6 dBmore gain than single-ended connections andallow the use of long interconnect cables.Balanced co0nections are completely immunetoinduced noise from the system or the environ-ment.

Single-endedA two-wire input or output circuit. Use care whenusing single-ended connections as the groundconnection is made last and broken first. Turn thesystem off prior to making or breaking single-ended connections. Single-ended connectionsare not recommended for connections requiringlong cable runs.

Placement

Before you integrate the KAV-300r into yoursystem, review the following to properly placeyour component. This will facilitate a clean,trouble-free installation.

For installations inside cabinetry, extra ventila-tion may be necessary. The KAV-300r requiresat least two inches (5 cm) of clearance on eachside and at least two inches (5 cm) of clearanceabove to provide adequate ventilation. TheKAV-300r does not require a special rack orcabinet for installation. For the dimensions ofthe KAV-300r, see Specifications, on the backcover.

The KAV-300r is not particularly hum-sensitive.Other components may be placed on or aroundthe KAV-300r, as long as the ventilation gridsremain unobstructed.

NoteSome televisions and fluorescer~t lights generatehigh levels of AM radiation, which can interferewith AM reception. Electro-magnetic radiationfrom some radio receiving and transmittingequipment (such as televisions, video recorders, digital equipment, and computers) can alsocause noise and interference.

Place the KAV-300r as close to the speakers aspossible. Run long balanced interconnect cablesto the receiver and keep speaker cable lengths toa minimum. Speaker cable adds impedance tothe load the amplifier must drive, regardless of thecable gauge.

AC POWER GUIDELINES

The KAV-300r has superb regulation and doesnot require a dedicated AC circuit. Avoid con-nections through extension cords or multiple ACadapters. High quality 15 amp grounded ACstrips are acceptable. High quality AC line con-ditioners or filters may be used if they aregrounded and meet or exceed the component’spower supply rating of 400 VA.

Power Cord

The KAV-300r should be operated only with thepower cord supplied. Please contact yourauthorized Krell dealer, distributor, or Krellbefore using any devices designed to alter orstabilize the AC power for the KAV-300r.

Optional Configurations

CONFIGURING THE KAV-300rFOR THEATER THROUGHPUT

To simplify the integration of an audio/video sur-round sound processor into your system, set anyKAV-300r input (S-1, S-2, S-3, or B-l) to operateas a unity gain stage. Krell calls this configurationTheater Throughput. When you configure aKAV-300r input for Theater Throughput, theKAV-300r volume and balance controls aretransferred to the audio/video surround soundprocessor, for integrated volume and balancemanagement and ease of operation. As long asthe KAV-300r input is configured for TheaterThroughput and connected to the audio/videosurround sound processor’s input configured forTheater Throughput, all KAV-300r volume andbalance adjustments are made through the sur-round sound processor. When you disengagethe KAV-300r input from Theater Throughput, the volume and balance controls revert to theKAV-300r.

How to Activate an Inputfor Theater Throughput

IMPORTANTAlways turn off the source component beforeyou configure any input for Theater Throughput.

1. Turn on the KAV-300r power using the powerbutton (3).

2. Press and hold the button for the input to be.

configured for Theater Throughput, for threeseconds.. The Theater Throughput LED (14)illuminates.

3. Use the corresponding input on the backpanel to connect the KAV-300r to youraudio/video surround sound processor.

IMPORTANTMake sure that the source component is a sur-round sound processor. Other source compo-

nents should not be connected to an input con-figured for Theater Throughput. Doing so canresult in excessive and possibly damaging vol-ume levels when the source is played. Alwaysturn off the source component before you con-figure any input on the KA V-3OOr for TheaterThroughput.

How to Disengage an Inputfor Theater Throughput

How to TroubleshootSystem Noise

Questions and Answers

AC grounding becomes critical when connect-ing high performance audio components. Whenyou mix and match audio components, eachwith its own ground potential, a low frequencyhum may occur in one or both speakers. Thisoften occurs when connecting new componentsinto a system.

If a low frequency hum emanates from thespeakers when you place the KAV-300r intothe system, follow these simple troubleshootingsteps before contacting your authorized Krelldealer, distributor, or Krell.

1. Check all input and output connections, making sure they are of sound construction. With the receiver off, remove the intercon-nect cables, then turn the receiver on. If thehum disappears, turn the receiver off andreinsert one of the interconnect cables. Turnthe receiver back on. If the hum reappearswith one or both interconnects inserted, there may be a defective cable. Have theinterconnect cables checked before pro-ceeding.

2. If the interconnects prove to be sound, youmay be experiencing a ground loop. Pleasecontact your authorized Krell dealer, distrib-utor, or Krell for suggestions on how tosolve this problem.

See Placement, on page 3, for information aboutelectromagnetic radiation that can cause noiseand interference.

Q. When I turn up the volume on the KAV-300r,there is a loud hum from the loudspeakers; whatcould it be?

A. Hum can be caused by several different dis-turbances. Check to make sure all cables intoand out of the KAV-300r are sound and makingproper contact. Also make sure there are nopower supplies or hum inducing components ontop of or directly below the KAV-300r. Anotherpossible source of hum could be a ground loop inthe system. Please contact your authorized Krelldealer, distributor, or Krell for suggestions onsolving this problem.

Q. When I select the B-1 input on the KAV-300r,one channel seems to have less gain than theother. Is something wrong with the preamplifier?

A. First check the balance LEDs. If the balancehas been set off center, the red balance LEDs leftor right of center remain illuminated after theadjustment. See Balance Keys (4F), on page 12.

Next, check the input cables. Locate the channelof the system that appears to have less gain.Switch that channel’s input cables. If the problemnow appears in the other channel, the cable isdefective. If the problem remains in the originalchannel, check the KAV-300r output Cablesusing the ’same procedure. If the difference ingain is not cable related, call your authorizedKrell dealer, distributor, or Krell.

Q. When I use my surround sound processor, where should I set the volume on the KAV-300r?

A. The volume level control on the KAV-300r isnot active in Theater Throughput mode. Whenusing the KAV-300r Theater Throughput feature, system volume control is regulated by your sur-round sound processor. See. Configuring theKAV-3OOr for Theater Throughput, on page18.
