Page 5: Institution

How well known are the production companies for both the high-budget

and low-budget film? KING KONG

One production company for King Kong is Universal Pictures which is a very well known production company which is why the film did so well and also shows that the film is high budget as a company that big would only produce it if they knew it would do well and help them as a company.

THE PURGEOne of the production companies which produced the film was Blumhouse which isn't that well known and is known for its horrors, because its not the most well known company like another company involved which was universal pictures maybe this is why it didn’t cost a lot to make and also why It didn’t produce as much as King Kong.

Page 6: Institution

List the differences between the high-budget film and the low-budget

film in terms of the institutions. KING KONG AND THE PURGE

• Different genre • Different target audience type

• King Kong made a lot more money than The Purge• Although one production team was the same the

other companies were different.

Page 7: Institution

What other films has the production company made? Were these as

successful? Why/why not? KING KONG

• E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 1982 • Jurassic Park 1993 • The Secret Life of Pets 2016 • Despicable Me 2

All these films are very well known and have a very high budget and all cost a lot to make but all of them also produced a high amount of money.

THE PURGE• Unfriended • Split• Sinister

The films produced by Blumhouse all have the genre of horror. As it only does one genre this means people can already tell that the film is a horror which does help its popularity out but its not as popular as it has a smaller target audience which is why the film didn’t do as well.

Page 8: Institution

What genre of films does the company usually produce? Is this important when considering who could produce your film? Why? KING KONG

When I looked at what kind of films were made from the production company like universal pictures I found that they didn’t really have a genre but the films that they had produced were all films that family's would watch together. It is important to have a film company that suits your film as when people see the company they can automatically tell what the genre may be and if you have a film company producing your film that doesn’t match then people may not want to watch it as they may not think it will be as good as the other films that they have produced as they are not used to working with that sort of genre.

When I was looking at what type of genre Blumhouse produce I saw that they produced horror films which overall look successful and popular among horror fans. If Blumhouse was to ever produce a film that wasn’t horror I don’t think it would do that well as people wouldn’t be able to recognise it as one of their films and therefore people who are interested in their films wouldn’t watch it and it wouldn’t get the audience that see their horror films as they wouldn’t know or just wouldn’t be interested. This is the reason why it is very important when considering who could produce your film.

THE PURGE

What audiences do each of the institutions aim to appeal to? Is this

reflected through their film choice, or does this vary?

KING KONG

The audience that King Kong and the other films that have been produced by Universal Pictures are mostly for family's of all ages. Although some are horror. The most popular and successful ones are the family ones. This is a very big audience as it can be watched by anyone of any age young or old. All the films the company has produced show this and have succeeded in appealing to family's which shows that it works and the films that they produce to have similarities as they all appeal to the same audience.

I know that the audience for The Purge is for people over 15 and for people who are interested in horror films. From the production companies you can see that all Blumhouse films are targeted at the target audience and that every film is the genre of horror. Blumhouse is known for its horror films. The company produces films that the audience would love and know will get them popularity and will grab the audiences attention.

THE PURGE

Page 10: Institution

Which institution do you feel outperforms the other and could

claim to be more successful, considering your research? Overall I would say the institution that I feel outperforms the other is the

Purge and the company Blumhouse. Although the film didn’t make as much money it still made a really impressive amount compared to its

production budget and it really shows how having a production that fits the genre of the film is very important as it promotes it to their certain

audience and if it is shown to the wrong audience then it wouldn’t appeal to them and people wouldn’t go and see it. As the genre of The Purge was horror having a production company that works with horror really was a massive advantage to them and really made sure the right audience was being targeted. I was very impressed with how successful

the film turned out to be. Other films produced by Blumhouse were also found to be very successful and also made a good profit for small budget

films which is why I think that overall it performed the best out of the both high and low budget film.
