The inclusion of nanoscience in the conservation and restoration science has recently been attempted and seems to be the future breakthrough in the world of Cultural Heritage.

The creation of new materials starting from precursors proposes future opportunities for industrial, as well as environmental application, due to their interesting properties of essential importance from the Cultural Heritage preservation point of view.

Concept and project objectives

Participants Introduction Description Conclusions10

The multidisciplinary research project is directed tothe development of innovative environmental friendly materials aimed to the protection of immovable Cultural Heritage assets.

The materials will be applicable for the protection of different inorganic mineral substrates providing multiple added functions:- consolidation,- self-cleaning,- anti-microbial effect.

Page 12: Institute of Building and Architecture Laboratory of Geotechnics

Participants Introduction Description Conclusions11

The first layer will provide consolidation of the historical material.

The second layer will serve for its efficient protection.

Additionally, the novel materials as a whole will possess good water vapour permeability.

Participants Introduction Description Conclusions12

The project combines:

- scientific knowledge for the development of new materials,- engineering experience in the production of materials,- conservation/protection institute expertise,- the in situ application and monitoring on selected historical buildings.

The historical site1:Fortress of Bac, Serbia(currently on UNESCO Tentative list).

Bac is known as the oldest medieval fortress in Vojvodina, which was built in 1338-1342.

The fortress was built on a small island which originated from a meander of the river Mostonga, located on the left bank of the Danube.

It has been in ruins since three centuries ago.

The historical site 2:Dornava Manor, Slovenia.National heritage of great significance.

The baroque manor with its gardens was built around1700 for the Sauer family.

The manor house complex, together with the park, is situated very close to town Ptuj.

The building itself dominates the locality, rising up abovefields and meadows.

Creating new materials within the HEROMAT project can be used not only in implementation of architectural monuments restoration, but also in the construction new buildings.

Implementation of the project will significantly expand themarket for new building materials and create new enterprises for their production.

Conclusions:

1. This project will contribute to the strengthening of the argument for future support of this field of research, considering that Cultural Heritage is a non-renewable resource, which needs to be preserved for future generations.

2. The main objective is to participate in the protection of the pearls of our culture with a new set of knowledge gained from the HEROMAT project.
