Dee McConnellProgram Leader, Lifelong Learning Institute [email protected]

The Harper College Lifelong Learning Institute is a program for seasoned, and not-so-seasoned, adults who enjoy learning for fun. At LLI, the thirst for knowledge never ends, with classes and programs that nourish the mind, body, and soul. Learning new subjects and being socially involved adds to a sense of well-being, a complex combination of physical, mental, emotional and social health factors. Well-being is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction. In short, well-being could be described as how you feel about yourself, your life and your social interactions. It adds comfort and longevity to your life. The LLI experience builds friendships and social interactions with others who live in the spirit of learning and personal growth. In addition to engaging classes, LLI participants enjoy a variety of campus activities such as intriguing speakers, music venues, a state-of –the-art library and much more. Our instructors offer a wealth of knowledge from their diverse backgrounds. Their distinguished careers in academia, writing, politics, cultural anthropology, mindfulness and many other fields afford them the knowledge and expertise that lends itself to superior subject matter. No test or other forms of evaluations are involved. The pressure of a traditional classroom is nonexistent; learning is made fun. New friends and unexplored knowledge await you at LLI. Come join us and indulge in the mind-elevating and well-being experience of LLI. Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose. Lyndon B. Johnson

■■ ARTMARC CHAGALL: POET, DREAMER, ARTIST, ECCENTRIC Marc Chagall, poet, dreamer, artist, eccentric, was one of the most original and imaginative geniuses of 20th-century art. He was born in Russia in 1887, studied painting there and later worked in Paris, where he was strongly affected by the Avante-Garde movements. He spent several years in the United States, then returned to France where he was a citizen. His art always remained true to his romantic and personal naive expression based on themes of village life, music, love, the Bible, and Jewish Folklore. Chagall received countless honors, including the Grand Medal of The Legion of Honor and an exhibition at the Louvre. PAINTING BY AMERICAN ARTIST 1930’S The aesthetic climate of the 1930s Great Depression, Its turbulent economics and political unrest will be explored through a number of paintings by American Artists. The Fall in America refers to what was commonly known as the Stock Market Crash of October 29, 1929. It is also described by some as a fall from innocence. The 1930s was a surprisingly creative period, as the nation’s artists sought to find and interpret what Modern Art in America might be. PARIS: THE CITY OF LIGHTS: HISTORY, ART AND ARCHITECTURE Known as the City of Light, Paris, France was founded around 250 BCE and can be traced back to a Galic tribe known as the Parisil who settled an island in the River Seine known today as the Ile de Cite. The city was captured by the ancient Romans and later its Left Bank became known as the intellectual district while the Right Bank became known for business. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, Paris became known as a center of art, architecture, and science. Today the beautiful city is home to over 2 million residents and is renowned for its monuments, gardens, museums, lights and mass tourism. PHILADELPHIA’S NEW BARNES ART MUSEUM Dr. Albert Barnes became an art collector and assembled one of the world’s most important holdings of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and early 20th-century private collections of art. Though he was often criticized by art historians and other collectors for his audacity and for creating his own ensembles in his own home according to his own taste and sense of aesthetics, he invited his guests, other collectors, and art historians to view them and learn from them. The collection was moved from his home about 7 years ago to the new landscaped 4.5-acre site in Philadelphia on Ben Franklin Parkway and is open to the public. THE GUEST WORKERS TO CITIZENS: TURKISH MINORITY IN GERMANY It has been almost 60 years since the first guest worker recruitment treaty went into effect. In these six decades Germany evolved into a multicultural society and today about three million Turks are calling Germany their home. The integration of the Turkish community has not been without its problems but especially the young and the well-educated seem to manage the transition from Guest Workers to Citizens quite well. WHAT WE ARE LEARNING FROM YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Americans can take pride in the initiation of the national park concept. Since it’s legal beginnings with the introduction of Yellowstone National Park in 1872, Americans have had to deal with issues that have become a national concern and triggered ongoing political conversation with regards to wildlife management. Conservation and recreation have often come into conflict. We will discuss the history and the current state of key issues that we are working through and learning about in our nation’s first national park. THE LIFE IN EAST GERMANY: ACROSS THE BORDER Since the fall of the Berlin Wall three decades ago, Historians have dedicated themselves mostly to East Germany’s political system and its oppressive instruments such as the secret police STASI. But although East Germany was a totalitarian state, there were still 16 Million people who were living a more or less normal life. Join German Historian Anette Isaacs for a compelling exploration of daily life in East Germany, its food and culture, education, consumerism (or the lack thereof!) and everyday items that were giving the GDR its identity and made it so different from its big capitalist sister, the Federal Republic (West Germany). THE PRESIDENCY OF HARRY TRUMAN A compromise choice for Vice President, Truman was pulled onto the international stage with little experience and no preparation. And yet during his nearly two full terms in office he faced every problem head on, made momentous decisions in a collegial manner, acted both tactically (e.g. Berlin airlift) and strategically (e.g. NATO), and when faced with a constitutional crisis (i.e. MacArthur’s challenge to his Presidential authority) made the correct decision in the correct way. Truman faced more significant challenges while President than any other President (except Lincoln). Our appreciation of him grows every year. This is a 2 part class running 5/23/19 and 5/30/19. ■■ HISTORYTHE 27- AMENDMENTS OF THE U.S. CONSTITUTION Over 11,700 proposed amendments have been introduced in the U.S. Congress. Only 27 have been adopted. We have corrected oversights and omissions (e.g. how many terms a President may serve), we have responded to social pressure (e.g. granting women’s suffrage), we have clarified delicate situations (e.g. how do we determine if a President is unable to serve) and in one case reversed a mistake (cancelling prohibition). We all know the first 10 as The Bill of Rights but the stories behind all 27 are fascinating and important. Join Professor Gary Midkiff for a study of our constitutional amendments. CHICAGO’S GOLDEN AGE OF DEPARTMENT STORES For decades, Chicago was home to some of the nation’s grandest department stores. Clustered mostly along a mile-long stretch of State Street, stores like Marshall Field’s, Carson, Pirie, Scott, Sears, Wieboldt’s and Goldblatt’s set new standards for retail innovation, customer services and visual display. Generations of Chicagoans trekked to these stores for holiday shopping, celebrations, and fun.
