The global logistics industry is estimated at roughly EUR 5.4 trillion, or 13.8 % of the global GDP Source: Communication from the Commission on ‘freight transport logistics in Europe, the key to sustainable mobility’ [COM 336 final]
Weastflows (west and east freight flows) – an INTERREG IVB North West Europe (NWE) project funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) – aims to improve and enhance freight logistics across an east-west axis in the NWE region. The project brings together experts from all sectors of the freight transport industry to work towards connecting supply chains in the region with the wider freight network across the rest of Europe and Asia. Through a combination of freight mapping, innovative technology and a drive to promote sustainable logistics, Weastflows has the potential to generate a step-change in the industry. This will help deliver economic, social and environmental benefits to communities and businesses in North West Europe.
The Weastflows project
Project footprintThe Weastflows project
An overview
An agent for change
Project partners will explore current freight logistics practices in North West Europe, identifying challenges in and opportunities to improve freight flows and encourage more sustainable transport methods. ICT and telematics solutions will be investigated and introduced to optimise efficient supply chains and help improve collaboration within the freight industry.
Connecting with the world
Weastflows will consider how to connect the supply chains within North West Europe with the wider freight network. It aims to create a global framework for more coordinated freight distribution. This will help deliver stronger transport links that extend deeper into Southern Europe and across to Asia, particularly China.
Sharing knowledge
As a strategic initiative, Weastflows will share learning and best practice with other relevant projects and industry organisations as well as public planning and transport authorities to influence their future thinking. Knowledge will also be shared with private sector businesses to encourage innovation and sustainable economic growth.

CONNECTIONS TO THE REST OF EUROPE, ASIA AND THE FAR EAST
• Transport buyers seeking to enhance efficiency and introduce sustainability into their supply chains
• Transport suppliers looking for guidance to operate more sustainably and as assistance to implement the latest ICT systems to deliver efficiency gains
• EU, national, regional and local policy makers wanting to improve their transport networks, encourage modal shift and work towards the ambitions of the EU 2050 Transport White Paper
• ICT professionals wanting to identify the latest thinking relating to ICT and freight transport
• Academics investigating research papers detailing North West European freight flows and interested in opportunities for collaboration
• Local communities seeking to benefit from a more balanced and sustainable freight transport network, reduced congestion, improved air quality and job creation
• Other, related EU projects through exploring synergies, opportunities and sharing knowledge
Weastflows will benefit:
The Weastflows project
Weastflows in focus
Infrastructure
Understanding current and planned freight transport infrastructure is key to identifying future opportunities for sustainable and more efficient supply chains. We will analyse freight flows by transport mode and freight type and extend this work to define and pilot sustainable gateways.
Sustainable multi-modal logistics
Multi-modal supply chains involve the carriage of freight by more than one transport mode and can include road, rail, inland waterway and shipping. We will examine, in detail, road based supply chains and identify if a multi-modal option is a realistic and sustainable alternative.
ICT and telematics
The adoption of intelligent ICT and telematics solutions within the freight network will help drive efficiencies and sustainability. We will pilot best practice applications and create web portals for freight, track and trace facilities, route planners and a system that encourages more sustainable road haulage.
Sharing knowledge
Project findings, reports and conclusions will be made available to all interested parties including transport buyers and suppliers as well as those responsible for transport and space planning and policy. Weastflows observers will disseminate project information across the wider industry both within Europe and farther afield to Asia.
Activities include:
Freight transport infrastructureMapping roads, railways, waterways and coastal facilities to understand current and future capacities and opportunities.
Green freight corridorsIdentifying, testing and promoting sustainable, multi-modal supply chains for moving freight.
Sustainable logistics gatewaysDefining and creating sustainable entry and exit points within EU member states comprising road, rail and maritime links.
Research on freight flowsExamining existing freight flows to identify and encourage sustainable alternatives.
Optimising supply chains through ICTUsing ICT to identify and plan more sustainable supply chains and encouraging private sector use.
ICT systemsResearching ICT systems, creating a knowledge base and testing best practice within a defined pilot area.
ICT pilot projectsDeveloping and implementing a number of innovative ICT pilots to drive sustainable freight transport.
Research on related EU projectsResearching relevant freight logistics projects within the EU and beyond and exploring synergies and new opportunities.
Project evaluation and impactMeasuring the benefits and impact of Weastflows to the economy, society and the environment.
Modal shift using ICTUsing ICT to model sustainable alternatives for existing supply chains and implementing pilots to demonstrate real benefits.
Efficient port operationsPiloting a port based web portal to provide real time cargo information and track and trace facilities.
Intermodal rail hubA pilot project to create a multi-modal freight exchange facility adjacent to a UK distribution park.
Intermodal ICT route plannerDeveloping and testing a route planner enabling sustainable, multi-modal journeys to be constructed.
Freight track and trace systemsUsing track and trace ICT systems to identify and encourage more sustainable transport modes.
The project focuses on four key areas: infrastructure, multi-modal logistics, ICT and telematics, and knowledge sharing. Each area comprises a series of activities ranging from mapping infrastructure to identifying and testing more sustainable and efficient supply chains.
