INSTITUTION FOR METROPOLITAN TRANSFORMATIONCALGARY ALBERTA5000 m2 mixed public interface
parti
the institite for metropolitan tranforma-tion is a multi-use arts facility that seeks to promote an understanding of the city through arts and culture. the program, form, and site strategy are intended to establish a connection between the site’s beltline neighbourhood and the down-town core to the north.
the program is arranged based upon a hierarchy of public-private, with most programmatic spaces addressing both the “front” (the street) and “back” (the CPR train tracks & downtown) of its site. the public program includes a bookstore, art gallery, theatre, and a full-service res-taurant. the institute also features research and support spaces, including offices, conference rooms, and a library.
the form and visual aesthetic of the building are based upon the idea of “post-industrial ruin,” making reference to the history of the site and its location on the CPR line. raised on a plinth and featuring facades with unique personali-ties, the institute seeks to create a 21st century streetscape and transform the urban fabric of its 10th avenue location.
