Instant Challenge for Rising Stars Teams

• All teams will have a time scheduled for their Instant Challenge at the Regional Tournament on February 20th

• Team Manager helps appraise their own team• All competitive teams do an Instant Challenge• Good practice – no score – positive feedback• Better prepares team when they move to the Elementary

level and compete• Lots of fun• Helps improve team in all areas• Since teams are not scored, and if you know you will not

be showing up, please let us know

What is an Instant Challenge?

• Secret…teams take pledge of secrecy• Types – creative problem to solve

– Performance based– Tasked based– Combination

• Timed event - 5 to 8 minutes• Usually has materials, might make props,

imaginary props, could be silent

How to Practice Instant Challenges

• “Perfect Practice makes Perfect”• Practice DI skills

– Brainstorming, critical thinking, creativity, communications, collaboration, improvisation, presentation, story telling, problem solving, material use and management

• Simulate tournament conditions– Secret, keep time, no advance notice, score

• Always debrief

When to Practice Instant Challenges• When the team needs a change of pace• Older teams practice at least 25% of meeting time• Enroll your team in our Winter Workshop

Tournament Day and IC• Each team is scheduled

for their central challenge and for their Instant Challenge

• Half of the teams do IC first

• Half do IC after their Central Challenge

• IC Check-In is located in a special place – follow the purple signs

• Teams check in 15 minutes prior to IC time – only ONE team manager and no spectators

• Teams escorted to holding room, then to IC room, and then to Cool Down room

• During IC, the TM will be an appraiser
