1. Introduction

This guide describes the system requirements and installation procedures of standalone versions of

software package WellWhiz major release 3. Standalone versions of WellWhiz are licensed with a

dongle or with a standalone license key that is connected to your computer. This document does

therefore not describe the system requirements and installation procedures of WellWhiz with a

floating network license. For details about licensing, see section 3. Licensing.

It is recommended that you install WellWhiz on a Windows 7 64 bit version machine. Full

recommendations with regards to computer specifications are included in the next section.

If you have a problem which the troubleshooting section at the end of this document does not

answer, please contact WellWhiz support.

More information on the software package can be found on www.wellwhiz.com. WellWhiz is a

product from Fracture Technologies Ltd. For more information about Fracture Technologies Ltd. ,

see www.fracturetechnologies.com.

2. System Requirements

Please note that even though WellWhiz 3.X has been successfully installed, tested and run on

systems with minimum system requirements this guide is based on using the recommended

requirements. The Windows and installation steps shown in this guide are shown when using a 64 bit

version of Windows 7. The Windows and installation steps on other operating systems may vary

slightly. If WellWhiz is installed on Microsoft Vista, installation issues specific to Microsoft Vista are

described in Docs/Installation issues with Vista.doc.

WellWhiz is a computationally demanding piece of software and hence it is strongly recommended

to utilise a computer with recommended requirements or better. Please make sure that the graphics

card specifically has good OpenGL compatibility for use with Java 3D.

Minimum System Requirements

1) Minimal 2.0 GHz dual core main processor

2) Dedicated 3D-display hardware, with at least 16 MB of graphics memory

3) 2+ GB of system RAM

4) Windows XP or younger

5) 2+ GB of free disk space

6) MS Excel

3. Licensing

This document describes installation of standalone versions of WellWhiz 3.X. With standalone

licenses there are two options:

A license for a single computer alone: This is the simplest of all options, but with this option WellWhiz can only be used on the computer that was used for generating the licensing information (or hostid, see 6.1 Apply for License). Furthermore, if some of the hardware of the computer is replaced such as the hard disk drive, the license might no longer work.

Licensing using a dongle: a dongle is a USB stick with a hardware key that must be physically inserted in a free USB slot of your computer when the software is going to be used. It requires the installation of driver software. However, with this option, the WellWhiz license is not limited to a specific computer, but to the dongle. So in this case WellWhiz can be installed and used on more than one computer.

The third option, a floating network license is not described in this document. With this option, one

can check out a WellWhiz license from a pool of licenses from a network license server. For a

floating network license send an email to WellWhiz support and request the network version of this

installation guide. Contact details of WellWhiz support are provided in section

4. Downloading WellWhiz

1) First check your system. For this, click with the left Mouse Button on Start, with the right mouse button on Computer and select Properties at the bottom of the context menu. In the top section, the Windows version is shown, in the System section, the system type is given. These installation instructions assume that the system is a 64 bit version of Windows 7. If this is not the case, you may proceed, but take into account that the Windows shown may vary slightly from the one shown in the guide, and if your system is 32 bit, one of the Windows will not be shown during the installation of CMG (IMEX). In addition, check if the installed memory is 2 GB or more. If installed memory is less than 2 GB consider installing WellWhiz on a different machine.

2) Open website http://www.wellwhiz.com

5. Software installation

In this section, the CMG, WellWhiz and (optionally) dongle driver software is installed. In next

section, section 6. License application and installation, the WellWhiz and CMG(IMEX) license

administration is handled and subsequently installed.

If installation doesn’t proceed as described in this section, refer to section 7, Troubleshooting. This

section contains solutions to some common problems. If that doesn’t help, please send an email to

WellWhiz support. Details of WellWhiz support are given in section

5.1 Extract installation

Extract the folders and files from the downloaded two compressed (zipped) folders and extract the contained WellWhiz-release-reprise folder to your desktop. The two compressed files both contain a folder with the name WellWhiz-release-reprise.3.4 or similar name. By extracting to the same folder (e.g. Desktop) the folders will be merged as intended. Note: Ensure both the folders are extracted in the same folder and once completed the folder WellWhiz-release-image-reprise.3.4 should contain a folder named CMGL. With older Window versions, you may need to install an unzip program such as WinZip or 7z in order to do so, with new Windows systems, you can do a right click, and select Extract All.

Double click on the extracted WellWhiz installation folder (WellWhiz-release-reprise.3.4) to produce

a Windows Explorer window. The explorer window will show a list of subdirectories, a support file

with the extension .dll, and a list of enumerated Windows batch files with extension .bat. Software

installation is carried out by executing the following steps. Apart from the last step, each step starts

with executing a Window batch command. The steps and associated Window batch commands are

listed here:

1) Install WellWhiz (1_Setup_WellWhiz.bat)

2) Install CMG(IMEX) (2_Setup_CMG_Programs.bat)

3) Optionally, install the dongle driver (3_Setup_Dongle_Driver.bat)

4) Check Installation (4_Check_Setup.bat)

5) Restart computer

Each batch command opens a Windows command window with the customary black background.

Leave this command window open until the command executed in the command window has

finished completely. When the installation command has finished, Press any key to continue … is

shown and the command window may be closed. Activate the command window (i.e. click on the

window to make it active), and press in any key.

6. License application and installation

6.1 Apply for License

If a dongle license is required, please make sure you the dongle was inserted in a free USB slot of

your computer. If not, do so now, and restart the computer. If alternatively a standalone computer

license is required, but a dongle is inserted in a USB slot, make sure the dongle is removed from your

computer. The license will be specifically for the dongle if a dongle is inserted in your computer.

1) Locate and double click on 5_Apply_For_License.bat. The following window will appear.

2) Fill out all requested details, and click on Save to Text File and save this file to a temporary

directory.

Note: If using a dongle please confirm the dongle number is included in the host id

information screen (red box).

3) Email the created and saved HostID text file to [email protected] requesting

the type of license for WellWhiz.

4) The license file will be submitted to you by email (filename.lic) and once received the installation of the file can be continued.

6.2 Install License

Note: When installing a dongle license it is again important that the dongle is inserted in an USB slot before the computer was turned on.

1) When receiving the license file by email save the file on a know location. Please note that the file might be required in the future and hence it is strongly recommended to keep a copy in a different location. The license file is a file with a .lic extension.

2) Click on Start | All Programs | WellWhiz 3.X | Install license with the right mouse button

and choose Run as administrator and the following window will appear.

Note: It is not always necessary to run the Install License utility as administrator, but if you

don’t in some cases you may come across a “permission denied” error.

Note: There are other ways in which to install a license, but the way it is described here, is the

most assured way of installing a license.

3) Press (1) Load license file and use the browser that appears to navigate to the license file that was provided. The license file location will become visible in the top bar.

4) Press (2) Install license. The following window will appear.

10) If the line at the bottom of the screen looks like what is shown here, licensing works. Congratulations! WellWhiz is now successfully installed, please restart the computer.

11) To run WellWhiz select Windows Start | All Programs | WellWhiz3.x | WellWhiz 3.x 64bit. Note: if instructions on how to use WellWhiz are required it is recommended to run the WellWhiz tutorial (Help | Tutorial in the WellWhiz program), or from the manual located in the software or in Windows Start | All Programs | WellWhiz3.x | WellWhiz 3.x Help.

The WellWhiz-release-reprise folder with the installed release from your desktop can be deleted. It is recommended to retain the zip file for future installations of the package. We also recommend reading the included or provided release notes for your installed version.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem 1: I can not see the Install License utility file in the WellWhiz folder

Solution: On 32bit OS versions, the Install License utility is sometimes located in the Windows Start | All Programs | WellWhiz3.x | Absolete folder.

Problem 2: My dongle license does not load after selecting the license file

Solution: If after you start WellWhiz, you fail to load a license and your license requires a dongle, make sure that the dongle was in the computer before you restarted the computer. You cannot check out a license if you insert the dongle after you restarted the computer.

Problem 3: The help file in the software is showing blank screens

Solution: If the accessing the help manual via Help | Manual in the WellWhiz program, or from Windows Start | All Programs | WellWhiz3.x | WellWhiz 3.x Help fails, the help file can also be found in: C:/Program Files (x86)/WellWhiz3.x/manual/HTML/ WellWhizManualWhole.html, if C:/Program Files (x86)/WellWhiz3.x/ is the location where you installed WellWhiz. You can open this path in a browser.

Problem 4: You cannot connect to the Reprise License Server Administrator webpage.

Solution: If you cannot connect to the Reprise License Server Administrator webpage, this usually means that an older version of the Reprise License Administrator server is installed. As explained in the following window:

Page 22: Installation Guide WellWhiz 3 - Fracture Technologies

Installation Guide WellWhiz 3

22

You can then start the Reprise License Administrator by typing in: http://localhost:9000 instead of the usual: http://localhost:5054. Note: If you indeed have got an older version of the Reprise License Administrator, some buttons may be missing from the webpage in comparison to the windows shown in the guide.

Problem 5: If you use big datasets, you can run into a Java heap memory exceeded error.

Solution: WellWhiz runs usually with a heap space of 800 MB. You can increase this number by copying ww64.bat of your WellWhiz installation directory into a personal folder and replace in the line: set XMX64=800m 800m with a larger number, e.g.: set XMX64=2000ms If your system contains 4 GB, it is here safe to use 2000m. Note: you can also adapt ww64.bat in the installation directory, but for that you need administrator privileges.

Page 23: Installation Guide WellWhiz 3 - Fracture Technologies

Installation Guide WellWhiz 3

23

Problem 6: WellWhiz cannot find Microsoft Excel.

Solution: If WellWhiz was unable to find Microsoft Excel, proceed as follows: 1) Start WellWhiz. 2) Select File | Options… and then the File Locations tab. 3) Use the Browse button right from the Spreadsheet Invocation label to search for Microsoft Excel, or fill the absolute path of Microsoft Excel directly in the input field right from the button. 4) Press on the Test locations button. If all locations including the spreadsheet program are found, the Not yet tested label changes into Files have been verified, else an error is produced. Note: If the installation directory of CMG(IMEX) is the recommended C:\Program Files (x86)\CMG, WellWhiz searches for Microsoft Excel in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office, C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office10, C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office11, C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12 and C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 in the order given. If Microsoft Excel is not in any of those paths, you must use the solution in order to specify the path yourself.

Problem 7: The WellWhiz console reports: PROBLEM: Cannot find simulation results. Re-run the simulation, but you just did a simulation.

Solution: This error may be due to long file or pathnames. CMG(IMEX) like most Windows programs limits path names to just 260 characters. So it may happen that when appending the suffix _results.txt for the results file to the WellWhiz dataset, this limit is exceeded. Limiting the length of path names is then the obvious solution, but the following trick is easier to implement: 1) Left click on Windows Start and open with cmd.exe a Windows command shell in the Search programs and files box. 2) Type then in the Windows command shell the command:

subst h: C:/_your_/_very_/_long_/_path_/_name_/ with h is a drive letter that is not already in use by the system. You can then refer to your very long path name with just the drive letter h, in essence sidestepping the whole issue. Note: If you restart your computer, the drive substitution is erased. If you want to keep the drive substitution after a restart, create a batch file with the substitute command, and paste a shortcut to that batch file to Windows Start | All Programs | Startup.

Page 24: Installation Guide WellWhiz 3 - Fracture Technologies

Installation Guide WellWhiz 3

24

Problem 8: WellWhiz stops suddenly overnight due to unknown reason.

Solution: It may happen that RLM license server stops overnight. If you possess administrator priviledges, you can prevent this from happening by adapting services.msc. 1) Left click on Windows Start and type services.msc in the Search programs and files box. 2) Click with the right mouse button on CMGL RLM Services, 3) and select the Recovery tab, and set the failure options of each failure to Restart the Service:
