ZEE NEWS - JUNE 2015 PAGE 3Thanks Kathy. I am sorry that I was
unable to be there (at the banquet for the check presentation),
however I am sure Pam did an awesome job. I
just wanted to say how much I appreciate everything that Zonta
has done for the Center. Being selected as the Charity to receive
the proceeds of the Spring Fashion Show was an honor.
I also wish to thank each and every lady of Zonta on the efforts
to educate the community of Human Trafficking and to battle to end
this. Kathy, you were part of the group of ladies that put together
the power point presentation, I am still using that today. I know
our goal was to get into every
school in Findlay and Hancock Co. I know that we have a very low
success rate of getting into the schools. I believe that in time we
will get into ev-ery school in our community. This reminds me of
the late 90’s when texting was just becoming the fad, myself and
Kristen Johnson ( Then Juvenile Prosecutor ) created a presentation
to give to the kids regarding sexting and inappropriate conduct via
text messaging. We were met with the same
resistance, and look at the problem today and we have schools
calling asking for this presentation.
But I did not give up, I decided that I would do presentations
to whomever would listen to me, I did not care if it was a group of
2 or 20 I would talk for as long as they would listen and show that
power point presentation. I look at it as I am still getting the
word out, sparking conversation which
has led to other groups calling and asking to hear the
presentation. I have given the presentation to our area law
enforcement. Now you want to talk about a tough audience, wow. But
I gave the presentation and answered any questions that they
had.
So is it making a difference? Has this partnership helped at all
concerning Human Trafficking Awareness? My response is yes. I have
given presen-tations and had people say I’ve seen your human
trafficking posters hanging around town. One person even told me
after a presentation, “I saw your Human Trafficking poster hanging
on the wall outside the restroom at the Shell Station on Trenton
Ave. When I first saw it I wondered why would it
be hanging there, after hearing your presentation I understand
why now.”
I have had some of the saltiest of law enforcement (I can say
that since I was one of them haha) call me after the presentation
and say “ I want to run something by you that I am seeing on the
streets and see what you think.”
I could list many more examples. What I am trying to say is it
has made a difference. Yes it is not as big as we wanted, but we’re
making eyes open and people think, and those people will discuss
this with their friends and it spreads.
So I will stop rambling. I just wanted to add that I do not
believe that any of this would have been possible without the help,
support and working together with The Zonta Club of Findlay.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you --Tom Blunk, Executive
Director

FROM THE DESK OF THE GOVERNOR, DISTRICT 5:Dear District 5
Zontians:
Happy Spring to all of you! And what a wonderful Zonta Spring it
has been! Special thanks to the Clubs of Greater Sandusky,
Elizabethtown, Hudson and Columbus for hosting our Area Meetings
and to Deborah, Mel, Sunny and Margot for the wonderful program
they put together on
Advocacy. Each meeting cov-ered a different aspect of
advocacy—from Elder Abuse to Human Trafficking to Help-ing Children
and Teens—we covered the whole spectrum! And through the generosity
of the District 5 Zontians, we raised enough money to sup-port one
Amelia Earhart
schol-arship! Thank you to Area 1for setting the bar, Area 2 for
giving the most per person, Area 4 for giving the most and Area 3
for helping us make it the final leg to the $10,000!
Thanks to all the clubs that submitted applications for our YWPA
award. All the young women submitted were doing amazing things for
their com-munities. Please see details on our winner below. I hope
you are all working on your plan for the JMK Scholarships due to
District by July 1.
Now its time to begin to pre-pare for the months ahead. There
were lots of ideas shared among the clubs on how to support the 16
days ofactivism starting on Novem-ber 25, 2015. I’m excited to see
what YOUR club will be doing to bring the issue of Violence
Against Women to your communities.Maile Doyle and Kim Tra-utman
of the Findlay Club are busy preparing to host all of you at our
District Conference
October 16-18, 2015. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you
then.Have a Happy Summer!

Zonta Says NO UpdateUpdate on Ohio’s anti-trafficking efforts --
as of April, 2015
On April 21, the U.S. Department of Justice awarded Judge Paul
M. Herbert of the Franklin County Municipal Court with the
Professional Innovation in Victim Service Award at the National
Crime Victims’ Rights Service Awards
ceremony, recognizing Herbert as an individual who has helped to
expand the reach of human trafficking victims’ rights and services
in Ohio.
On April 17, a Reynoldsburg couple was charged with luring three
women into human trafficking and forcing them into slave-like
conditions. Both suspects are facing one count of human trafficking
stemming from abusive relationships
with the women over several years at the couple’s home. If found
guilty, they each could face over 40 years in prison. Police are
investigating the possibility of a fourth victim. On April 20, the
couple pleaded “not guilty” to human
trafficking charges. On March 26, 2015, a man from Cincinnati
admitted to running a sex trafficking ring in Ohio and Kentucky
and
received a 15-year sentence in federal court in Louisville. He
will also serve 10 years of supervised release and pay restitution
to the victims. He had been harboring a dozen women in a boarded up
home in Cincinnati and driving them
to Louisville into forced prostitution.Hamilton County saw its
first human trafficking prosecution on March 23, when a mother from
Cincinnati was indicted
on 27 felony counts of human trafficking in state court for
trafficking her 11-year-old daughter to her alleged drug dealer. If
convicted, she and her drug dealer face life in prison.
Investigators believe the crimes occurred between
February and June of 2014.The Cleveland Division of the FBI
began investigating a possible human trafficking connection to a
prostitution arrest made on March 9 in Independence, Ohio. They
arrested a 36-year-old woman for prostitution and a 58-year-old
man
for promoting prostitution. The investigation is ongoing as
investigators look for signs of force, fraud or coercion. The Ohio
Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers (ONCAC) and its 26
Children’s Advocacy Centers reported new quarterly data and an
additional 23 victims of human trafficking were identified in the
first quarter of 2015. In July
2013, the Ohio Human Trafficking Task Force/Ohio Department of
Jobs and Family Services entered into a two-year agreement with
ONCAC to ensure that a well-trained and capable first-response
network exists throughout Ohio to
meet the needs of child trafficking victims. The new data brings
the total number of victims identified since July 2013 to 135 human
trafficking victims:
Children and Young Adult Survivors Identified by Age, July
2013-April 2015Age 0-6: 6Age 7-12: 14Age 13-18: 98Age 18+ :
17Total: 135*
Of the 135 victims:
131 were sex trafficking victims4 were labor trafficking
victims
131 female, 4 males
*Note: The 135 children and young adults were identified as
human trafficking victims by the trained multidisciplinary teams
(MDTs) and the staff members at the child advocacy centers. MDT
members and children’s advocacy center
(CAC) staff identified these minors’ situations as having the
characteristics and circumstances of human trafficking. When the
MDT and CAC identify a victim, the type of charge filed could be
human trafficking but depends on local law enforcement/local
prosecutor’s office, etc. ONCAC tracks the charges filed in these
cases, regardless of whether
they are charged as human trafficking.
