inspire words

Sliding doors........ You never know till later in life how the decisions you made have shaped and moulded the scenario that plays out in later years.

At 21 yrs of age your ‘why’ about why you get started may be totally different to the benefits you live for later. What do I mean by this?

I got started into movement at the age of 21. I was extremely overweight, uncomfortable and just didn’t feel like I fit in. I’d been overweight since about 10 and was picked on all through school. Though exercise I found my potential and became confident in life and myself. I grew energetic and stronger and started to control my outcomes. That’s why I got started and It wasn’t easy at first. I struggled to understand the right foods, I struggled with finding the exercise that I enjoyed and at times I wasn’t sure if I was achieving it.

I persisted and learnt that consistency is the major difference between those who make it, and those who fail. Yes, consistency.

Flash forward almost 2 decades. Sitting on the lounge with my three kids and I started having chest pain. Real scary chest pain. Panicked chest pains. How could this be, I’m fit and healthy. I was rushed to hospital but they couldn’t find any reasons. About 4 hospital trips later and many tests they found I had 7 holes in my heart. I had had them since birth but had no idea. I was told that had I have not looked after myself for the last 18 years that the chances of a stroke were dangerously high.

Making the decision to start changed more than my confidence. It quite literally saved my life.

My story is not unlike the thousands of people who have committed to making a change to move more. Some get started to play with their kids, some to loose the last few kilos. Others to get some confidence, others for self esteem. Some to get ripped Abs and Guns, others to fight cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis etc. Whatever your story, know what it is. Share it with the people around you and hopefully motivate them to start too.

It all starts with a decision. A decision not to settle for how things are and the excuses that we live with. A decision to choose a lifestyle that will give you a better quality of life in the last 20 you live. A decision to take out the cheapest insurance policy that you have ever bought which gives life long benefits.

Do you know why I’m in this industry? So that I can help YOU to be inspired to start today. I love seeing people achieve their goals and actually living what they have learnt.

Tell us your story about your why. We want to know it. If you’ve already achieved your goal then share this with a friend so they can get started. If your inspired, pay it forward now.

You don’t know how good you can feel until you experience it.

2015

So what’s our plan for motivating a nation to move in 2015. Well if I’m honest, it starts with you. We want to find out what motivates YOU specifically to move and set up the foundations for you to inspire those around you too.

Why? Do you know that the 2 closest degrees of separation from you are directly affected by your actions? This means that the people in direct contact with you, and their direct contacts, are the only ones really affected by your actions. Not your Facebook friends, but your real contacts. This means that your actions will shape the lives of those closest to you. Heavy, right? This is why children of families that are inactive continue to have the same inactive tendencies. This year we WILL help you set some items that you may have on your movement bucket list and help you achieve them. These may be some things you have always intended to do but have never set a real plan to do. Hoping for it to happen will get you no closer to it.

If I’m honest, I don’t like the term ‘New Year’s Resolution’. It assumes that the only time you can make a change to your goals is once a year. I do, however, like the chance to wipe the slate clean, put the bad things that may have happened behind you. The excuses or issues that have held you back can now be overcome by a positive attitude that comes from setting your goals.

So rather than setting resolutions that you may or may not hit, why not set some serious goals this year. Take the resolutions that you may have already set and ensure the end date for when you have to hit them is clear. An example, you may have had a resolution like: ‘This year I want to look after myself and eat healthier.’ What does this mean? Are you going to eat fish and broccoli 6 meals a week? Are you going to cut back on fast food? Are you going to join the gym? First thing you need to decide when setting a goal is, what’s the reason for doing it? Weight loss, fitness, feeling, self esteem, strength?

Once you know that, set a goal about the specific need. The goal may be - Five kilo’s down by March 31st. The how is ‘I’m going to prepare food for the week on Sundays so I don’t buy take away foods at work during the week and I’m going to get up early 3 days a week and exercise before work.’

A resolution may be – I want to run a half marathon. The goal may be – Run a half marathon in October just to finish it So, if you really do want to achieve your goals this year, here’s a plan. Write down, don’t just say them, 5 Clear goals for you to achieve this year (I like 10 but at least start with 5). If you have professional and personal goals write them on separate lists.

Make sure you write down the goal with a date to achieve it and also put the reason WHY you want to do it. Put this in a place or a format that you can see almost everyday. On your fridge, next to your bed, in a photo frame or as your phone screen saver. From this, each time you read them, set yourself a list of things you need to do to move towards them. These are your to do list that you should complete. If you wish to share your goals, go to our facebook page – ‘Inspire a World of Movement’ and post them on there. You will find that you are not alone and your goals may be the motivation for someone else to achieve theirs too.

motivationGet Your Fitness Routine Back on TrackFor whatever reason – sickness, work, holidays, family commitments, sometimes our fitness routine can come a little unstuck.  But don’t be disheartened – with a few simple tips you will be back on your way to your fit self!

One of the first golden rules to reclaim your fitness routine is to get back into the habit of accountability.  Track your fitness and dietary habits either the old fashioned way with pen and paper or keep up with the techno-cool kids and use your smart-phone and an app.  This way you can keep an eye on what you are doing and acknowledge your success once you have your fitness routine back in full swing!

Some of us are natural born organisers and others aren’t but

the key to a fitness routine is being prepared – whether you are an early riser or prefer an after work gym session, pack your gym bag the night before so you have no excuse not to do that work-out!

If getting back on the fitness routine bandwagon alone is daunting then find a workout buddy – even if it is your four-legged friend!  This will keep you accountable and inspired.  Alternatively consider a personal trainer – someone that is dedicated to tailoring a fitness routine especially for you!

A successful fitness routine is all about setting goals so aim for daily exercise – naturally there will be days that you can’t fit in a full gym session or class but think about taking a walk at lunch, just to get you moving and on track.

Lastly, a good fitness routine is only as good as your mind-set so stay pumped!  If you feel like you are losing focus, energy or lacking in motivation – don’t hesitate to reward yourself for returning to your fitness routine…a massage or a new pair of shoes works wonders!

To find out more about becoming a Personal Trainer and helping people continue training please call 1300 880 255 and speak with the REAL educators in fitness, the Australian Institute of Personal Trainers.

I lost my leg in 2011 and after a long battle with ulcers and blood clots. After more than 10 years and many long stays in hospital i came out as an above knee amputee.

My last surgery was in July 2011 and I walked out 4 weeks later. Yes I had a horrid time in hospital as it was a long 9 months. After surgery and many complications, I managed to walk out with a walking stick and holding my youngest daughter hand at the same time with tears streaming down my face. Two weeks after that I threw my walking stick away and began walking unassisted.

I lived in a tiny bedsit with no paths and from there started to learn to walk on uneven ground and over all different types of terrain. Within 6 months of being out of hospital I discovered very quickly there wasn’t any type of support or a network for people who had gone through an amputation. I soon found myself blowing up with weight and spending a lot of time on the floor either from falling over or just from the reality that yes i am now above knee amputee.

After hitting an all time low and crying for several days I thought...

“I need to change, I need to do this, I need to get up and make a difference because if I hadn’t I wouldn’t be here today. I am so happy i did.”

I joined a local to gym to work on balance, fitness and my mobility. I found going to these gyms rewarding and helped me gain my balance very quickly in the early stages of rehab & learning to walk again.

Whilst going to the gym I noticed that the gyms and PT’s I had been using were trying to train me with generic routines and were trying to mould me into an able bodied world of fitness training. For me it wasn’t working. So from there I started working on adapting the routines written for able people into routine I could use for my own ability. Hence where the idea first came about. To train and become a PT for persons with a disability and to help other people like me bridge that gap of support and social engagement. The plan is to have better endurance to help people with special needs to

maintain a positive outlook on life

With a career as a chef and since losing my leg i had to work out a different career path. I starting training and working as a Hospitality trainer and assessor. It was enjoyable but I knew deep down that it was a short term gig and needed to look for a career that was more sustainable. So in January 2014 I began doing my Cert III & IV in fitness with the Australian Institute of Personal Training.

I was not only the first above knee amputee to enrol – but also the first above knee amputee to be qualified and pass the course. From there I have become Genesis Fitness Club Maitland’s first Personal Trainer with a disability and also the first who is an above knee amputee. I have been fortunate enough to be sponsored by Mai Wel Labour Force Solutions to help with clients and overall cost to the clients. A big thank you to Mai Wel and Genesis Fitness Maitland for all the assistance and support with our journey.

In 2014, I opened my own business

as Amped Ability Personal Training - Training people with all abilities and specialising in people with disabilities. As an amputee in the gym i have achieved so many goals that I didn’t achieve even with 2 legs. My attitude is that i will not say NO to any challenge. I might have to modify things a little but i will end up doing it in the end.

My biggest achievement in the gym thus far is finishing and completing my Cert III & IV in Fitness and a personal best leg press at 265kg with sets of 5 using both my legs.

Since being with Genesis Fitness Club Maitland and meeting Steve Cook (Club General Manager) and all the great staff and fellow Personal Trainers, it has given me a new lust in life and cemented why i wanted to do this as a career and to help as many people with a disability as I can.

My inspirations comes from a lot of avenues. From people I meet who have far more difficulties than myself to those with a myriad of different challenges. I have the belief that yes i am Above knee amputee and yes in the amputee world it is pretty much one of the hardest to manage but as I

am living through this and am learning – it just isn’t that bad. It’s actually a hell of a lot easier than what i had when i had 2 legs. And much less than several other people i have met with far more challenging disabilities. My personal inspirations are coming from little challenges I am giving myself each day in the gym. The little conversations I have with my clients and how their training is helping them with the simplest tasks. Nearly every person that trains in our gym is there to either lose weight, work on strength and condition or to get fitter or to sleep better. Our guys [with Amped Abilities ;)] are there just to be able to get thru their days, to have the endurance in their bodies to get up, move about freely. To transfer from car to chair and have the strength in the arms and bodies to do this all day, to know that there is someone there to help, as a social contact, to have a laugh and some fun whilst working on a common goal.

Another big avenue where i get my inspirations from is Challenge athlete foundation in the USA. I watch these athlete’s train, succeed and do a life that some time ago I feel is just too far

away for me to reach. But I do believe working and training with Genesis that my goal of running and loosing another 20 plus kilos is an achievable goal. Since starting with Genesis I have managed to do a lot of thing that i would not have tried as an above knee amputee. I’ve played indoor soccer, tried TRX box jumps and the simplest thing of just being able to walk for around the gym for an 8 hour day. My long term goal with Genesis is to have a PT in every Genesis fitness club throughout Australia who has a disability and can service the community with respect to their clients.

I would like to thank John Pirlo, Dave McGillion and Steve Cook for asking me to be on the cover of #inspireaworldofmovement Magazine and tell my story with my clients.

This for me is one of the biggest achievements in my adult life. To be accepted as a Personal Trainer with Genesis and an above knee amputee is something that I will not forget quickly and it will be an honour to represent Genesis Fitness Club Maitland and also the Genesis brand.

FillerA “Filler” is a series of exercises which is used at a specific point in the class. These exercisesare completed in every class over a term and allow for participants to assess their own improvement. Repetitions, time per exercise and degree of difficulty of these exercises generally increases throughout the term.

fitness life

Hi, my name is Brad Crouch and I am the founder of Raw Performance Fitness & Nutrition at Genesis Fitness Charlestown. Our goal is to help you become the best you can be!

I still remember the first time my big brother took me to the gym. It was a hot little sweatbox full of old rusty equipment, one fan that barely worked and a full sized boxing ring right in the middle…yep I loved it!

From that point on I would go to the gym and do what I call your generic training. I would lift some weights, maybe a little jog on the treadmill, do some abs to finish up and I thought I was relatively fit. I remember about 2 years ago watching a YouTube clip of a guy doing 50 burpees in 3 min and I thought, I reckon I could do that. I train 3-4 times per week, it doesn’t look that hard…what a wake up call! I think back then it took me about 7min or more and it was clear that the training I had been doing wasn’t cutting it and I needed to ramp it up.

That’s where metabolic conditioning or METCON as we

call it stepped in. For the last 2 years I have adapted this high intensity functional style of training into my life and the results speak for them selves. I am easily the fittest, strongest and most conditioned I have ever been in my life and can knock out those 50 burpees in under 2min.

I feel I now have an edge because I know our METCON training hits all elements of fitness. It will make you stronger, faster, more explosive, improve your endurance and transform you into the complete athlete, and I like that feeling!

So what is METCON training? The best way to describe METCON is full body functional movements performed at high intensity, but the key to our success is how our experienced trainers structure your METCON sessions.

We know one of the biggest challenges people face is keeping consistency in their training. It is very easy to get stuck in the same routine and this is where you can lose focus and become stale.

This is why our trainers have developed signature workouts to constantly challenge you both physically and mentally. You never know what you are in for until you arrive, it may be our Target Workout, Level Ladders, Team Challenges or my favorite the 4 Phase Workout!

By keeping your workouts constantly varied it allows us to include all fitness elements into your workout as well as keeping it fresh and exciting for you.

Our sessions cater for any fitness level from beginners all the way to your seasoned athletes with over 15 sessions on offer every week.

Would you like a change from your same old gym routine? Than come and get motivated, meet new people and lift your intensity with our METCON sessions under the guidance of your own personal trainer.

Contact Brad if you would like to come a FREE session.

QUESTION TIME WITH Lisa FennWhen did you start your training? I first starting training myself when Genesis Rutherford first opened August 2012.

What was your training like?I started participating in classes. I didn’t really know what to do as far as exercising went. I went to classes to get ideas on what to do out on the gym floor. I was training every second day and lost 10 kilos on my own before I plateued.

When did you start with a trainer and why?I started with Sara in August 2014. I noticed that I wasn’t getting results anymore and I was getting very low on motivation to train.

How has your life changed since training with Sara?My eating has improved immensely, she has taught me to eat healthy and guided me in the foods I should b e eating to get the best out of my workouts. My training has improved and I am now training properly and getting results. I am now confident enough to train on my own and know that it all helps.

What has stood out for you so far?I have noticed my body has become firmer, stronger and fitter. I have become more confident within myself and my appearance. I am now wearing different styles of clothing.

What goals do you have for 2015?I want to continue training and keep achieving results. My big goal is to compete and complete the Doyalson Raw Challenge 22nd March 2015 with my daughter.

Tell me about your trainer?Sara is an awesome trainer. She has made me focus on my eating habits, which has resulted in 3.5 kgs lost, 4.5% drop in my body fat, 20 cm all over loss. She motivates me each and every training session to get the results I have so far. Sara is always available to me if I have questions or find myself getting unmotivated.

What is your motivation?I use my clothes as a great motivator for me to achieve my goals.

Motivational Quote“Do it now, Sometimes later becomes NEVER.“

From February 9th you'll embark on a 12 week journey to achieve your body transformation goals.

Once you have paid your entry fee, downloaded the YNB App and set up your personal information, you'll be assigned a trainer from the club who'll meet with you for an initial consultation, measurement and photo taking session. At this stage you'll also need to write a before-challenge essay/report. This is to be no more than 250 words and submitted to management at your local club.

Once you've completed the essay, you'll then participate in minimum 1 x 30 minute Personal Training Session per week. This can take place as a 1-on-1 session or you may wish to do this session with 1 or more friends in a small group. For Personal Training Session rates please speak to the trainers in your local club.

It is proven that people who work with a personal trainer achieve greater results in a shorter amount of time. There is no limit to how many sessions per week you can train with a trainer. Most of our previous finalists and club winners have trained with a trainer between 2 - 4 times per week. The support you receive from your trainer is key to your success.

During the Challenge you will receive nutrition support via both your Nutrition and Training Guide along with access to our online nutrition portal providing you with continuous

7 day meal menus, recipes and shopping lists designed to simplify your weekly food preparation.

Your club will also provide weekly Group Sessions for all club competitors to come together for a workout. Some of these workouts will be fun team building exercises, some will be sessions where you will work hard and some sessions will be educational where you will learn new skills. Be sure to use these sessions to make friends and accelerate your results while working out in a group of people with a common goal to yourself.

You will be required to have your photos and measurements taken at the start, mid point and end of the challenge by your trainer. Clubs will provide times and further information regarding photo and measurements.

Throughout the challenge you have support through the Before and After Challenge Website and be able to share stories and progress with other competitors though our Facebook page or Instagram account.

The challenge will conclude on Monday 4th May 2015. On this day you will be required to have final measurements and photos at the club. At this time you will also need to complete your Post Challenge Essay and submit this to your club management.

From this point your results will go before a judging panel in club where a club winner will be awarded and submitted to a national panel to compete against club winners from across Australia.

Judging at both club and national level is by a subjective vote of the panel. We do recognise that there will be many contestants that achieve great results but unfortunately there can only be one club and one national winner. Remember by completing this challenge and achieving results you will already be a winner!

PNF Stretching PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation)

Stretching is one of the most effective ways to increase mobility and flexibility in the body. By using specific techniques, a reflex muscular relaxation occurs allowing the area being stretched to lengthen further than it would in a traditional static stretch.

These techniques include either contracting or holding a muscle for approximately 10seconds and upon relaxing, the muscle lengthens further and deeper.

Best results occur if repeated at least 3 times and on the final repetition hold the relax phase for 30 seconds.

your club

I would like to start by thanking all our members for all their support in 2014. It has been a time of growth and change for our club. Your honest and con-structive feedback has assisted us to make some great changes to the club in 2015.

In the gym we started the year with the construction of our second crossrig frame in the back training area, added a Hack Squat machine as well as additional specialised equipment to assist with multiple training techniques and styles. We really appreciate your feedback about our gym and equipment. We strive to provide top class facilities that are of benefit to everyone.

Our group fitness timetable is growing from strength to strength. The introduction of our Signature Series classes has been a hit. Starting with MX45, BX45,

Shockwave and Tabata. Our members have loved it, and so have the instructors. We have also introduced the popular GenesisFit classes to our timetable in the specialised Functional training area. We finished the year with our biggest addition yet, the introduction of Barre Attack classes to Studio 2. There was a lot of hard work put in by everyone in the planning, training and execution of the classes. All this hard work has paid off, we have had an incredible response to these classes.

The launch of our Barre Attack for our summer timetable has been a hit with classes hitting capacity throughout the first month. The format of the class is different from everything else on our timetable. It’s a combination of Ballet Barre drills, Pilates and fitness. The class moves continuously which creates a focused atmosphere within the studio, makes our muscles burn, makes the time fly by and makes us SWEAT SWEAT SWEAT!!!

It has been amazing hearing the positive feedback from our members about this class. Many members and staff started seeing changes in their body shape, tone and posture after just 3 weeks of doing the class. If your haven’t tried a class yet you need to put it on your to do list for this month, you will love it!!! Make sure you book your place at reception.

I have decided to do the YNB challenge in 2015 because I am ready to change my life. I spent my teenage years overweight and very unhealthy. At 19 I decided it was time to change. I joined a gym and was matched up to an amazing personal trainer who helped me achieve results I never thought possible. He taught me how to enjoy exercise for the first time in my life.

Since that time my weight has gone up and down. I have been inconsistent with my training and my eating. I feel like every time I get on track and start seeing results I sabotage myself through binge eating.

I feel like now is the time, I am ready to change. I will lose the 4kg I am holding onto, tone up, reduce my body fat, reveal my abs, commit to consistently eating right, I will have more energy and I will take ownership of my training. I am committed to achieving these goals. 2015 is my year of change.

#whatsyourstory

2014 #YNB Club WinnerTwelve weeks ago I made a promise to myself to listen, act, learn and move. That promise was the smartest decision of my life.

Tomorrow I have my final weigh in and measurements. I am confident that I met the weight loss goals I set in the beginning. My pants in the first photo are a size 22 and the pants I will be wearing tomorrow are a size 16. That is an amazing achievement but not the one I am most proud of.

Twelve weeks ago I started on a life changing journey, i have learnt that I am a strong, capable woman who deserves to be happy. This journey has opened my eyes to a life I never thought I was capable of. I am now fitter then I have ever been. I have met some wonderful people and made great friends. My husband and I are in an amazing place and my children now have a mum who is happy.

I am so proud of myself for just giving myself over to the challenge and trying my best. I was not perfect everyday but I never gave up, that is what I am most proud of. I had an amazing support team and without them the journey would have been almost impossible. I have learn’t that letting people in to help you is not a weakness but pure courage.

I am so grateful that the “Your New Beginning Challenge” exists. It is an amazing place to start the journey to the rest of your life.

Welcome 2015

I chose to dedicate myself to a career in the fitness industry after personally going through my own weight loss journey.

To know how incredible it felt to achieve my goals both mentally and physically and to finally have confidence within myself, I knew this was it for me. This is where I can give back and share my passion and love for health and fitness and help others on their own personal journey.

In this challenge I will dedicate every waking moment to motivating and supporting my clients. I will be there to push them when they know they can, but more importantly I will be there to prove them wrong when they think they can’t.

I will also be participating in the challenge and will be training with another personal trainer from Cessnock Genesis, to motivate and push myself to help achieve my future goals. Which include competing in the ANB fitness modelling later this year and to improve my overall capabilities within my own training and health.

I want to see every one of my clients involved in this challenge achieve all of their goals and be proud of their success within the 12 weeks. At the end of this challenge I want to hear that this challenge has inspired, motivated and helped them achieve a lifestyle change that they can keep up, and to know they are proud to say that I have been there for them and that I have been a part of making all of their goals and achievements for this challenge possible.

Hi, I’m Tarina Kearns and I’m a personal trainer at Genesis Cessnock.

#whatsyourstory #YNB12WC #genesiscessnockTiff Brown is a current member of Genesis Cessnock and has decided to take part in the 2015 YNB challenge under the guidance of her selected personal trainer Blake Austin.

She has currently been doing on-going personal training over the past few months but was looking for a path that could push her to the next level of motivation and expand of the education about the life she wants to lead.

Overall Tiff explained that it was more about her life style changes and her eating habits she wanting to turn around from using the tools the YNB challenge has to offer. Tiff continued to explain that she has never done a challenge like this before and was looking forward to the education programs and group boot camps that she really thinks will make the difference in staying motivated.

Tiff’s focus for this years 2015 YNB challenge is on ‘tone and weight loss’ with upcoming weddings and a holiday booked tiff is ready to grab onto the challenge with both hands.

Lucy Reed has been a member since the club opened. Currently not seeing any personal trainer and thought this might be a good path for some guidance coming into the New Year.

Lucy will be trained under the professional watch of Luke Ruthenberg, Luke is a new and very knowledgeable personal trainer that has recently joined the Cessnock Genesis team.

Lucy wants to turn exercise into a daily habit and make exercise apart of her daily routine. She hates weight loss challenges and loved that the YMB challenge was not build around this, as she believes that this isn’t the big picture.

Lucy is doing this for herself, by herself and calls herself a quiet achiever. She explained she didn’t need to do this with a friend, group or partner as she didn’t want to have to rely on someone else to pull her through. She said ‘sometimes this can just create bad influences and habits later on’

Lucy loved the idea of the education seminars and the focus on the nutrition and how its been built to be within everyday life and everyday people.

Lucy got married about four years ago where she did feel active and motivated but overtime lost sight of this due to personal reasons, Lucy is doing this to take back her life one step at a time, she is doing this for confidence and she is doing this for most importantly herself and her future!#inspireaworldofmovement

I’ve been the manager of Howzat for over 13 years and am very excited and committed to the future of the club with Genesis Fitness. 2015 is going to be great year with our awesome team who are motivated and inspired to assist members achieve their fitness goals.

I’m happily married to Maureen and have 3 adult children currently living in Melbourne, Canberra and Darwin. My 3 year old granddaughter lives in Darwin and I love how technology allows me to stay in touch via Facetime and Facebook. I’m a fan of all sports but playing golf with my mates is a favourite pastime.

The change Genesis has bought in the delivery of customer service to the members of the gym and participants of indoor sports is exceptionally inspiring. It is very exciting to be part of the Genesis team.

I will be participating in the YNB Challenge and has also inspired family and friends to take advantage of this exciting event. I believes this new program will deliver for me personally, physical and mentally.

I have always been surrounded by active family and friends who have inspired me to live an active lifestyle from an early age. My father competed in road cycling, judo, decathlon and road running. My mum was a thrower and swimmer and some of my earliest memories are traveling around the UK to watch them compete. My grandparents still travel the country playing bowls in their 80’s!!!

I started my career in sport at the age of 6 when I joined the swimming club my Mum coached at, we swam every day. I always got in trouble for stoping every length for a chat. At 8 I was given the opportunity to be part of the school cross country team, I became addicted almost over-night. I could be active and talk at the same time... From then I started running 3 times a week, the more I trained the better I got and by the time I was 21 I had a couple of international vests and was training at the EIS multiple times for day with my dream of making it to the Olympics in my site.

Unfortunately due to a lot of health and injury problems after being significantly underweight for such a long period of time I had to retire from competitive track and field when I was 23 and just ran a few times a week for fun. With an improvement in my health due to better diet and lifestyle I am happy to say I am back training properly and making a return to competitive athletics.

My goal is to inspire others to live an active and healthy lifestyle, healthy people are happy people.

your clubFitness has always been part of my life. I grew up in my father’s footsteps and was myself, inspired by the happiness that I saw in my dad when he was involved in a multitude of activities from surfing and swimming to football and shooting hoops in the backyard!  Dad always wanted my sister and I to be active and I am grateful for his influence and to have had the opportunity to be involved in so many activities.

My childhood memories centre around activities that range from unplanned activity on family picnics to planned sport competitions and fun days out surfing.  My mum had the kindest heart and always drove us to netball games and allowed us the freedom to move.  Fitness means to me, health, happiness and sharing fun times with family and friends.  Fitness and sport bring people together.  Fitness has shaped my study and my career.  I feel amazed that I am fortunate enough to be engaged in work that contributes to the wellness of the world.I have the most amazing job in the world, inspiring people to move and enjoy times with family and friends.  This is what fitness has done for me. I have the opportunity to inspire people to move.  There is nothing like living how you love to and sharing this with people.  Every day I wake up to an exhilarating feeling triggered by the simple movement of running.  Energy creates energy,  I am inspired and feel free.  I am fit to be able to go for rides and walks with friends and jump on my surfboard.  I am getting stronger training with one of the awesome personal trainers at Genesis Fitness and this feeling is just another completely different feeling.  I live it and love it! Thank you mum and dad, you inspired me to move and be happy!  That simple!

#whatsyourstoryThis is Samantha’s story and we hope it can inspire you to begin your fitness journey.

Just over a year ago I was a completely different person. Not just obese but unhappy, insecure and living half a life constantly concerned about my weight. Issues that I felt like I had been dealing with for my whole life.

I cannot really pin point a time where this problem truly got the better of me, as I had always been self conscious about my weight. I got to a point where I would break down at least once a week feeling that I was trapped in this body that I hated and would never be able to change, sentenced to a life of discontent. I can, however, highlight the exact moment that all of this changed. Catching up with one of my closest friends over a game of tennis, this friend told me that I should come to the gym with her. I did.

Since that day in November 2013 I have only ever looked back to appreciate my progress. I am now 19kg lighter, unbelievably more fit and insurmountably happier. To this day I’m not quite sure why this particular health kick was the one that finally stuck, but I could not be more thankful that it did. That first day I went to Genesis Warners Bay I experienced a style of training I had never done and managed to throw up my breakfast. I had definitely overes-timated my level of fitness which I

now know was basically non-existent. Such a dramatic introduction somehow didn’t deter me and I was persuaded to attend a personal training session which is where I met Brad.

Brad has now been my trainer, torturer, therapist and friend for over a year and has possibly been the most integral part of my journey. Another member of the team, equally as important was Brad’s sister, and my dietician, Sally. Her guidance and friendship has been the constant level of accountability that was absolutely necessary for such a challenging time of my life. With these two and the rest of the team and clients involved with Raw Performance, I am now apart of a supportive, encouraging and healthy community that motivates me every single day.

Brad and the Raw Performance team deserve every single suc-cess and more, they have a genuine enviable passion for fitness and team work. I cannot begin to express my gratitude for every single person that has been involved in my journey to become the more happy, healthy and confident person that I am today. I am sincerely excited for this new year, new goals and even bigger achievements. Surrounded by like-minded people helping to create the healthiest possible version of myself.

Fitness has always been a big part of my life. From a very young age, I was playing competitive sports right up until my 20’s. This not only built my passion for fitness but simply became a lifestyle. Training in a gym however began as just a social exercise for me. It was a way to catch up with friends after work and unwind from the everyday stresses that life tends to deal us. Over the years, fitness became more than just a social thing. I started seeing some results myself but it wasn’t until I became a big part of my close friend and work colleague’s life changing story that really grew my love for fitness.

This thing called ‘fitness’ became a lot more than just a number for muscle building and fat loss. It became more than just running on a football field for 90 minutes. It became a tool that people use to live a happier and healthier life. Something that our role models use to inspire us each and every day. My goal every day is to become a better person and fitness is one of my avenues to show that. This challenge, my goal is to inspire others around me to be able to do the same.

I started with Genesis Fitness Maitland in 2013, I had only been training for 2 months at the time. My goals were to gain weight and a better physique, confidence was a major issue for me. I weighed only 65 kg’s at the time (not good for being 6’2 tall), I lacked energy and motivation to do anything with my life. When starting employment with Genesis I began to meet a group of people more motivating than anyone before, purely interest-ed in inspiring those around them to move and achieve their health and fitness goals. I started training with a regular routine, seeing results was an awesome motivation to keep training. I eventually decided after a regular routine was established that it was time to start improving my form and technique and general method of training, I worked with a trainer twice a week at the club during lunch breaks. There was a wealth of knowledge and experience offered to me by my trainer. I learnt things in this time that I still apply into my training now, helping me maximise my results at all times. Over the space of 1 year I had gone from 65kgs to 83. This was a HUGE confidence boost! I have since moved positions and clubs several times, as these changes have happened I have found it more and more difficult to keep my training routine. I am currently settling into a new position at Genesis Mayfield, I will be participating in the 12 week YNB challenge at my club to commit myself to training again. My goals are to improve my energy levels as well as learn to manage my time better during the 12 weeks to get back on track. Im excited to see all the amazing results to come from team Mayfield!

I have been interested in health and fitness for as long as I can remember. I started with Genesis 3 years ago as a group fitness instructor and since then have moved through numerous different roles. I did my first YNB 12 week challenge in 2013 and it changed my life, I was fitter, stronger, healthier and happier than I had been in a very long time and to add to that I lost over 9kg and 53cm’s.

Since then life has changed a lot and i am ready for a new challenge. This time around I won’t be focusing so much on weight loss instead I will be focussing on a new goal of competing in my first weight lifting competition. Looking forward to seeing some of the amazing transformations and going on this journey again myself.

My fitness journey started at the end of my HSC in 2013 where I had put on 20kgs over the period of my HSC. I didn’t look like it but I weighed 80kg. I was studying 30+ hours a week, boredom/stress eating and had no physical exercise in my schedule.

I joined the gym in December 2013 with little confidence which meant little confidence to ask for help. For about 10 months I stayed at the 5-10kg weight loss range. When I finally gained the confidence to ask a trainer for help in August my weight loss changed completely. I had a massive improvement in energy levels, wellness and I finally felt great.

This is why I have chosen to work in the fitness industry to provide support to any person on any fitness journey and to help build a person’s confidence.  This is also why I am participating in the YNB challenge and why I am telling everybody about it. The YNB gives you the support, motivation and encouragement with no judgement and you know you will have fun whilst achieving results. I am choosing to do the YNB challenge to motivate myself to lose my Christmas kilos, improve my strength and to educate myself further in healthy eating

I didn’t grow up in a sporty house and certainly didn’t enjoy sport or fitness through school. In fact, it wasn’t until I was 26 that I decided I’d like to “Tone up” and perhaps put on some weight and build some muscle.

I had remained the same weight since I was 14, which meant as an adult, I was rather underweight.I had a horrible diet that comprised of mainly junk food and sugar, I smoked

half a packet a day and I was always tired and looking for a “pick me up.” Of course I turned to sugar and energy drinks, which lead to a vicious cycle of sugar highs and sugar crashes. I never felt hungry, and could go days without eating, so long as I had my energy drinks, coffee and cigarettes.

7 years on, I have gained 25kg and look and feel so much healthier! I love working out in the gym and whilst I still enjoy sweet deserts from time to time, they no longer make up the bulk of my diet. I have 3 kids, and always make a point of stressing how important active play and fitness is with them. In fact, it wasn’t until I became a father that I realised the greatest gift I could give my children was ME. My time, my advice, my support, my involvement and my presence in their lives. Every parent struggles with juggling family time with what is perceived “selfish” time or “Me” time. The reality is however, as parents this becomes even more important, as we need to look after ourselves to be healthy

enough to look after our children.

So if you are toying with the idea of doing the Genesis YNB challenge, but feel it would be too “selfish” due to your other commitments, I would encourage you to look at it from another perspective. Lead by example for your children and do something amazing for your health and your children.

The YNB challenge has been designed to have something for everybody, regardless of your motivation. Individual attention from your own personal trainer, group motivation from the exclusive YNB classes, Nutritional Seminars to educate you on making healthier eating choices, customised meal plans and your own YNB diary to keep you on track! No other challenge is so complete!

Pre YNBI’m a single Mum to a 3yr old and a 3 month old. I have recently moved to Coffs Harbour to be closer to family. I have joined the 12week challenge to hopefully meet some people and kick start some weight loss. I am hoping to lose between 10-15kgs over the 12 weeks but I have about 50kgs in total to lose. I have struggled with my weight all my life but I gained heaps after losing both my brother and sister to suicide. I have suffered terribly from depression and low self esteem and was slowing killing myself too with my weight. I have since realised that exercise is the best anti depressant ever and losing weight can only boost my confidence. My major goal is to gain some fitness so I can be the best Mummy I can be for my kids and to live my best life for my brother and sister. Their lives were cut so short by this depression monster, so I plan to live my life to the fullest in their memory.

Post YNBWhat an amazing feeling setting and actually achieving a goal is!!! My goal was to lose 10-15kgs in the 12 weeks and I got there! It is such an awesome program with so many avenues for support. I have learned so much about nutrition and exercise! I’m loving cooking new and healthy meals for my family and the group fitness classes were so much fun. I was constantly pushed out of my comfort zone and I loved it! It was a pretty tough road and I have had my ups and downs.

I am a single Mum to a 3 year old and 6 month old so finding time to train was a bit of a battle. And I have a bulging disc in my lower back which I aggravated in around week 5 so I wasn’t able to do any training for a few weeks. My trainer was such an amazing support. He was the best part of doing the challenge, his belief in me and also being accountable to someone each week was my driving force. Before starting the challenge I was suffering terribly from depression and low self esteem. I have lost both my brother and sister to suicide and I really was scared I was heading for the same fate. But exercise and living healthily is the best anti depressant and now I am happy all the time and the confidence I have gained is immeasurable. Weight loss is just a bonus.

fit collegeIt’s never too late to begin a career doing what you love. Certificate III and IV in Fitness courses can be completed via Full Time, Part Time Campus courses and Online Ecampus courses. Available for anyone over the age of 16 years.

Thinking you are too old for this? Have you gone from a couch potato to weekend warrior? If you could do anything at all, would you like to turn Fitness and Health into your career? A good thought – yes! But have you also questioned this before and asked “Am I too old to be changing jobs or starting something new?..... The answer – NO!

You might be interested to know that more and more people are making the career change in their thirties, forties and even fifties and are becoming Fitness

Professionals (Personal Trainers). “Almost two thirds (62%) of fitness professionals are aged between 22 to 39 years……. with 4% over the age of 55 years” (Fitness Australia Report 2013)

Personal training is an excellent option especially for enthusiastic Mums looking to return to the workforce or Dads looking for a Career change and school leavers wanting an exciting career. A career as a personal trainer ticks many of the needs of a working Mum or Dad.

One of the biggest advantages is that work schedules can be flexible which means that you can work your clients around your family. There are opportunities to create your own business and perhaps employ others.

By positively impacting the lives of

others every day, your life experience is something that cannot be taught. It is something that you learn through your own journey. This is truly one of the things that can distinguish a good personal trainer from a great personal trainer.

As a mature aged student, this is indeed a tremendous asset to bring to the profession of personal training. The best part is that personal training is always fun, challenging and rewarding. The app is easy to use, and the newest versions seem to have corrected some of the bugs and crashes that were happening.  Due to the accelerated mode of

the app, battery life may be significantly decreased.

This app is strictly a running app.  It doesn’t have fancy tracking or analytics, it won’t tell you how many calories you’ve burned, and it isn’t going to give you menu suggestions.

It’s going to give you motivation to run, and a reason to lace up your tennis shoes.  And really, isn’t that all you need?

Unlike other running apps, Zombies, Run! can be interfaced with your own playlist, and nar-rates the storyline to you over the course of a 30 minute workout.
