General Information House of Travel Accommodation Ratings

To assist with the selection of your accommodation we have created our own rating system. These should therefore be used as a guide only and may alter throughout the year.

Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private ensuites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services.

Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and good level of comfort usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment.

Superior accommodation offering exceptional level of comfort in rooms with quality furnishings and fixtures. There tends to be greater attention to personalised service and strong focus on quality food and beverages.

First class accommodation including small and stylish boutique properties. Accommodation in this rating offer the very best services with detailed focus on high customer satisfaction and are usually located in prime locations. They are considered the ultimate accommodation in the Cook Islands.

A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your House Of Travel specialist to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs.

A warm lagoon, a swaying hammock and a waft of frangipani are waiting for you in the Cook Islands, just under a four hour flight from New Zealand. Forget long arrival procedures and complex transfers – slipping into Island life in the Cooks could not be easier. Step off the plane at the island capital of Rarotonga to a song of greeting and be welcomed with an ei (flower garland) and soon you will be relaxing at your accommodation – the island only takes 45 minutes to drive around. The Cooks are a group of 15 islands, scattered like pearls, across two million square kms of the Pacific Ocean. Rich in Polynesian culture, the islands are also closely linked with New Zealand – the Kiwi dollar is used here so there’s no currency exchange to worry about on your arrival. Rarotonga is the heart of the Cook Islands and is easy to get around. The island has its own classically gorgeous tropical beaches but also a mountainous, forest-clad interior that entices visitors looking for a little adventure. The Island is the stepping stone to the outer islands. While some of the other islands in the Cooks lie less than an hour’s flight from Rarotonga, the most isolated and pristine are accessible only by sea. Among those easily reached by air and that cater for visitors include Aitutaki and its astoundingly beautiful lagoon, Atiu, Mangaia and Ma’uke. Explore by yourself, join a tour, have a drink at a bar with the locals or join them to sing hymns on a Sunday. Wherever you are you’ll experience the Cook Islanders’ deep sense of hospitality and you’ll quickly become accustomed to the relaxed pace.

Our favourite things to see & do

• ISLAND NIGHT – This is a great way to experience the vibrant local culture. The major hotels put on an Island Night at least once a week, with traditional song and dance and an island-style feast known as an umukai.

• DINING OUT – Book your table on the grand verandah at Tamarind House and sit back and enjoy the finest food on Rarotonga. The atmosphere is elegant and classically South Seas – you’d half expect to see Somerset Maugham sipping a good claret and scribbling away at a nearby table.

• LOCAL NIGHTLIFE – Perched on a wooden sea-view platform at Avarua, the Whatever Bar & Grill is a trendy place for the young and young at heart – it can get lively on a Friday night and the winding stairs down to the ground can be rather a challenge if you’ve enjoyed yourself a little too much!

• TRADER JACKS – No trip to Raro is complete without a visit to this old favourite bar and restaurant. Gentleman Jack himself can often be found propping up the bar.

• FRUITS OF RAROTONGA – Homemade jams and tropical flavoured chutneys are divine at this little shop opposite Tikioki Beach, but it’s good for smoothies, cakes and fruit juices too, and the snorkelling in the lagoon opposite the café is sensational!

• PUNANGANUI MARKET – Head to these markets on Saturday morning for handicrafts, colourful clothing and black pearls – you’re sure to pick up a souvenir or two!

• WIGMORE’S WATERFALL – On the eastern side of the island, a dirt road leads inland to Wigmore’s Waterfall, a lovely cascade dropping into a fresh, cool swimming pool. Be prepared for the blood thirsty mosquitoes.

RarotongaThe main island of the Cooks, Rarotonga, is not only a holiday destination in itself but the gateway to more far-flung isles. Not that you have to leave its sandy shores. Sink into island time and never leave your resort, but if you want to venture out, Rarotonga has plenty to offer. Take the local bus around the island, or hire a motor scooter or bike and stop at your choice of idyllic beach or watch the sun set over the reef. Rarotonga is almost completely encircled by a lagoon, so water-based activities are on offer everywhere. On land join an island tour or tackle the cross-island trek. Don’t miss the Saturday market in Avarua where you’ll find pareus (sarongs), handmade quilts, tropical fruit and black pearls. Evenings bring a stroll on a moonlit beach or an island feast and dance night with dynamic drumming and twirling hips.

Island nights are great fun but be prepared to join in the dancing!

Pick up some local souvenirs for those back

home at the Saturday morning markets.

Perfect for swimming and the snorkelling is superb. Don’t forget to find Nemo!

As its name implies, the property is right on the beach and there’s plenty to do here if you’re able to tear yourself away from the white sand and pretty lagoon. At the end of another perfect day in paradise it’s highly recommended that you head down to the Shipwreck Hut on the beach to watch the sun set with an `Opu Ra´ magic cocktail in hand.

PRICE GUIDE FROM: $147 (Minimum 2 night stay) PRICE GUIDE FROM: $246 (Minimum 2 night stay)

With wonderfully personalised and friendly service it’s not hard to see why this absolute beachfront property is one of the Islands’ most popular and well-established venues. It’s ideal for couples but has family-friendly room types for those who decide to 'pack' the kids. With self-catering accommodation and some great restaurants and cafés within walking distance, the best of both worlds await you. With a local bus stop at your doorstep and rental car/bike operator adjacent, exploring the island couldn’t be easier.

Here the focus is on comfortable and secluded beach living set against an amazing mountain backdrop. Life here means kicking back, hiding in a good book or gazing at the ever-changing tints and hues of blue in the lagoon. For the more active visitor, snorkelling, swimming and kayaking off the white sand beach are just steps away. The large covered deck of your bungalow, where sandy feet and cool refreshing drinks are the norm, is a great place to relax. This is the perfect spot for a honeymoon or romantic beach escape.

Our favourite things to see & do

• CAFÉ TUPUNA – It’s the nearest thing to a gourmet restaurant on Aitutaki. Freshly caught fish and island flavours form the backbone of the menu, and the garden location is one of the most atmospheric places to eat on the island.

• MT. MAUNGAPU – The 30 minute hike to the top of Aitutaki’s highest peak (124 metres) is worth the effort simply for the incredible views over the entire atoll and the sapphire blue lagoon – remember to take your camera.

• LOCAL NIGHTLIFE – The lively Coconut Crusher Bar is the island’s main nightspot and a great place to "shake your booty" at the regular island nights, or roll up for the weekend’s DJ.

• LAGOON CRUISE – When you’re out on Aitutaki don’t miss the chance to take a lagoon cruise. There are several operators that cruise around the lagoon but one worth considering is the Tekings Champagne brunch cruise. You’ll enjoy fantastic swimming and snorkelling while your hosts prepare a delicious hearty island breakfast served with champagne – enjoy!

• GOLF – Play a round of golf at the Aitutaki Golf Club’s 18 hole golf course. Clubs are available to rent for around $10 and green fees are around the same price. An interesting course situated on the coast beside the airport.

• SAFARI TOUR OF AITUTAKI – This is a great way to learn more about this beautiful island, its history and culture, and the people that live there.

AitutakiAitutaki and its lagoon captivate visitors from that first glimpse out the aircraft window. Startlingly white swathes of sand contrast with the deep azure of the encircling Pacific Ocean and the remarkable turquoise of its lagoon studded with tiny islets. Just a 45-minute flight from Rarotonga it’s possible to visit Aitutaki on a day trip. Swim with schools of tropical fish in the lagoon, luxuriate in the sand under a palm tree and eat freshly caught barbecued fish. Make sure to take your passport if you go to One Foot Island – the tiny post office there will stamp it. But better still, why not stay a few days – living simply or in luxury? No matter what style you opt for, the delights of the lagoon are there for everyone, as is the fun of hiring a motor scooter or a bike and exploring deserted beaches, tiny villages and their white-washed churches.

Snorkel or swim in the sapphire blue lagoon.

Remember your underwater camera!

A great way to explore the island is

in a 4WD on a Safari Tour.

With sand between your toes enjoy freshly caught fish at Cafe Tupuna.

Our favourite things to see & do

• ZIONA CHURCH, MA’UKE – Built in 1882, it was once described by New Zealand artist Samuel Palmer as one of the 12 most fascinating churches in the world. It’s an example of early Western architecture mixed with Pacific influences, along with a lot of Maukean ingenuity.

• LARGEST BANYAN TREE IN THE WORLD, MA’UKES – Picking a path along the unsealed crushed coral roads on the way to Motuenga is a surprise encounter with the largest banyan tree in the world – over an acre in size.

• SPECTACULAR CAVES, MA’UKE – It is the caves that create the mystery of this spectacular island. The Motuenga, which is said to have a hundred separate underground chambers leading to the sea, is but one of the many dotted all over with deep freshwater pools filled with cool crystal waters.

• RARE BIRDLIFE, MANGAIA – The Mangaian Kingfisher never eats fish but instead preys on skinks, insects and spiders. Nesting in old coconut palms, this bird the Mangaian Kingfisher was thought to be under threat of extinction, but with a population of between 400-700 is safe for now.

• ANCIENT CAVES, ATIU – For the intrepid, a walk through the fantastic dense tropical jungle leads to Anatakitaki Cave where three caverns harbour clear pools of water, stalagmites, stalactites and a high natural cathedral ceiling above. The caves, which riddle the coastline, were often used as burial grounds and ancient artefacts can be found deep in the chambers.

• ORAVARU BEACH, ATIU – Captain Cook landed here in 1777. Cook set foot on Atiu and trekked inland in search of supplies. Oravaru Beach is the only place in the Cook Islands that Captain Cook set foot on.

The Outer IslandsAuthentic island life flourishes on the three tranquil, remote volcanic and coral islands of Atiu, Mangaia and Ma’uke, all of which are less than an hour’s flight from Rarotonga. Atiu, with its taro gardens, forests and tiny secluded sandy coves, is steeped in legend as well as being rich in rare birds including a swiftlet that lives in caves. Don’t miss the locally-brewed bush beer and homegrown coffee. The island is famed for its handmade quilts and ukuleles. Explore a labyrinth of caves on Mangaia, the second largest of the Cook Islands. Take a four wheel drive safari or go deep-sea fishing. The market sells delicate shell necklaces and handwoven pandanus bags. Ma’uke, the garden island, has caves with freshwater pools to swim in and a unique 'divided' church with separate entrances for worshippers from two villages.

Take a canoe trip on the largest freshwater lake in the Cook Islands.

Watch the locals and learn how to

weave intricate flax hats and mats.

Ziona Church on Ma’uke is a fascinating mix of Western and Pacific culture.

PRICE GUIDE FROM: $71

Adjusting to island time & lifestyle is about the biggest problem you can suffer from on Ma’uke. There are few shops and no cafés, and fresh home-baked bread comes from the village where loaves are baked in a wood-fired oven. The bungalows are cheap and cheerful and hiring a bike or scooter is the best way to get around. The coral roads are deserted and a day spent cycling round the road is a blissful retreat. Every so often a small, sandy beach comes in sight bordered by rocky outcrops.

PRICE GUIDE FROM: $96 PRICE GUIDE FROM: $181

If you like hiking and exploring, this is the island to visit. Atiu is an unusual and interesting island, not much visited by tourists. Even if you are not "tour people", you will probably want a guide if you decide to venture out into the lush wilderness, as it is easy to get lost or to fall down one of the many holes that litter the forest floor. After your day of exploring, Kura will cook you a scrumptious dinner while you enjoy the gorgeous views into the distance from your spot on the interior plateau of the island.

The oldest island in the world now boasts the newest tropical retreat. Perched ocean side overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean, the villas feature large patios, letting you enjoy panoramic views and stunning Mangaia sunsets. Explore the caves along the reef-side or follow the coastal roads and find a secluded beach for yourself. If you can be tempted into more strenuous activity then head inland for some scenic hiking. Here you have all the time in the world to get lost and rediscover your adventurous self.

Come on down! The limestone caves on Ma’uke offer many chambers to explore and also provide cool water pools where you can enjoy a swim after traipsing around the caves. The local kids will be happy to show you the way to some of the more hidden caves. Motuanga Cave is one not to be missed though. The ‘Cave of 100 Rooms’ is a lot of tunnels that start in the south eastern corner of the island and are rumoured to extend all the way out to the sea.

A nature lover’s paradise! While this tour will appeal to bird lovers, anyone wanting to explore the natural wonders of the Cooks will discover that this is a tour not to be missed. Learn about the Rarotongan Flycatcher (Kakerori) Protection Programme and the re-introduction of the Rimatara Lorikeet. Take a walk along an ancient paved path through the native rainforest where you’ll see the flora and fauna of Atiu in the unspoiled wilderness. Don’t forget to bring your sturdy walking shoes and insect repellent.

Not for the faint of heart! Caving on Mangaia is the perfect adventure for those who don’t mind closed, confined spaces and adrenalin-pumping adventure. There are a number of fascinating caves, both burial and others, to be found on the island. The caves wind their way through cliffs of fossilised coral (known as makatea) and are dramatic and beautiful, with stunning stalactite and stalagmite features. This is definitely out of the ordinary and something you should experience during your visit to the Cook Islands.

People who holiday in Rarotonga all rave about the same things: the laid-back, unhurried atmosphere, friendly people, and the beautiful safe beaches and lagoon. And if they’ve got kids, top of the list is how perfect it is for family holidays. Rarotonga may not have invented the kids’ club, but they do have them down to a fine art. Your treasured offspring will be captivated for hours and days on end, so you may have to beg for a little time with them yourself. Or you could just quit while you’re ahead and use your free time wisely, by sleeping in a hammock under the nearest coconut tree. As well as the kids’ clubs, many of the resorts boast other family-friendly features like swimming pools and water sports. When you’re ready to hit the beach, you’ll wonder if you’ve stumbled onto another huge swimming pool, this one lined with blindingly white sand and warm, clear water that’s been thoughtfully stocked with colourful marine life. Throw a mask, snorkel and set of flippers at most Kiwi kids and they’ll be happily entertained until dinner time. Because it’s a relatively small island, you’ll find it’s easy to get around, whether you hire a car or jump on one of the regular buses that circumnavigate the island. It’s cheap, fun and a great way for the kids to interact with the locals, and you can try out the local eateries at the same time. Whether your children are pre-schoolers or school leavers, there’s a strong chance that they’ll be begging to come back again – with or without you.
