Legal situationNational Act on Geoinformation
• Is fully compliant to the INSPIRE directive
(without reporting obligation to EU bodies)
• Represents a similar legal basis to Switzerland as the national acts do
for the EU Member States
• Goes beyond the INSPIRE directive by involving all geoinformation
(not restricted to environmental themes), referred to by a Swiss
legislation or decree
• The respective regulation lists over 178 data themes (of which 75
concern the environment) for which metadata, a minimal federal
data model and geoservices (e.g. visualisation and download)
have to be provided

The Swiss background
Organizational Issues• Cantons transpose the national act by introducing
their own cantonal laws on Geoinformation• Cantons and municipalities organize, implement and
handle their own local SDIs (over 30 local portals!)• cities and cantons or several cantons provide regional
SDIs• Public but also PPP and private providers• Access through Geoportals• Portals of the Cantons are accessible through KKGEO
Web site• The Swiss Federation provides a Federal Geoportal
for the access to all thematic portals of federal offices• NSDI coordination through e-geo.ch
