Picking Up The Keys,
Chuck Redfern, Interim Pastor, Quaker Hill Baptist Church
I’m still viewing my mental picture that came while I prepared a sermon on Psalm 125: A woman groped her way through a dimly-lit hall toward a door. The floor shook and wobbled beneath her feet. She struggled forward until she reached the door, only to find three dead-bolt locks. Three keys hung from the knob. She balanced herself on the wobbling floor as she fit each key into its hole. It was a struggle, but the door finally opened and she walked into a bright, palatial room. The firm, marble floor did not shake.
Various Scriptures illuminate the possibility of living unshakable life, a life in which we no longer wobble from feeling to feeling, emotion to emotion, relationship to relationship, and teaching to teaching. We are no longer like children, “tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine” (Ephesians 4:14). We dwell in peace and contentment whatever our circumstances (Philippians 4:7,9 and 10-13; see Acts 16:25 and following, where Paul and Silas sing hymns even though they’re chained in the darkest prison cell). We can even rejoice in our sufferings and trials (Romans 5:3 and James 1:2-4).
But how do we get there from here? What are the keys that unlock those deadbolts?
That’s where Psalm 125 comes in: First, we learn how to trust once more (verse one) – or, perhaps, we learn it for the first time. The Hebrew concept of trust was grounded in a firm hope in the reality of a living God, a Lord in whom we “live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). The trust to which we are called is not a vague wish; it is grounded in the creator and sustainer of the universe. Secondly, we understand who we are. Psalm 125 alludes to Mount Zion, the solid mountain on which the temple was built. We discover that God views us as the modern-day Mount Zion in He-brew 12:22-23. We are not merely “saved sinners;” we are the means by which God intersects with the world. Thirdly, we maintain our vision. Those who sang Psalm 125, a song meant for Israelites on their journeys, held to their vision of Zion itself. They maintained their focus on their destination. Such a vision propelled them through the dangerous and problematic mountains.
Perhaps events and circumstances have made the very ground shake beneath us. I think God is inviting us to pick up his keys so that we can unlock the door and walk into his palace. Perhaps events and circumstances are compelling us to walk closer to God – and we will be all the better for it.
