MY VISIT TO THE NEWSSTAND

•Good Housekeeping caught my eye initially because of the main image. The main image had a cooked egg in the shape of a heart baked into a piece of toast. •In my genre, Everyday with Rachael Ray caught my eye because of all the colors that are used on the cover. It really stood out on the rack with all of the other magazines.•Good Housekeeping had the best pictures because the main image looked perfect and very crisp. •The magazine with the best design was Cooking Fresh because the cover wasn’t cluttered and was easy on the eyes.•Everyday with Rachael Ray’s coverlines attracted me the most because I really liked the food items she featured, specifically the “Chocolate-Dipped Everything!” coverline.•Good Housekeeping had the best table of contents because it was well-organized and easy to navigate.•The best articles were found in Everyday with Rachael Ray. There were a variety of different things that were featured making it likely to appeal to a range of readers.

REFLECT ON NEWSSTAND VISIT

• At the newsstand, there were many magazines that attracted my attention. Specifically, the colors and images that were used on the many food magazines caught my eye. Once I looked through a few of the magazines, I realized that many of them feature advertisements in the front. I also learned that some table of content pages are cluttered with photos and arrows while others are more sleek and sectioned off by topic. I prefer the more clean, organized style.

• This magazine was the most inspirational to me because it really stood out among the rest regarding both the colors that were used and the coverlines that were featured. The coverlines were really for, as the masthead suggests, everyday people and lives. I also really liked how each coverline stood out in a different way, for example some stood out for their color and others stood out for their font and size.

MAGAZINE DETAILS

• The magazine, specifically, features meals for everyday lifestyles. It gives step-by-step instructions for some recipes, for example in the Jan/Feb 2015 issue one of the recipes featured with step-by-step instructions is Three-Bean Chili. The magazine also features a monthly menu filled with a wide variety of selections to take readers from breakfast right down to dessert after dinner. The magazine also has a “Good Buys” section where it features products that their target audience (middle-aged, middle class women who are likely a part of a family) is likely to take interest in. This section doesn’t just feature food products, however. It also has tech, home, and accessory items.

QUESTIONS

• Generally, the central image on the cover is a food item that falls under the topic of the main coverline. The photo is usually taken at an angle from the top of the subject.

• The photos on the cover are usually taken with a solid background (like a tabletop or plate) or a decorated background (like a placemat or tablecloth).

• The covers aren’t likely to have the same colors for either the masthead, background, or coverlines. They may be similar on some covers, but it’s not likely that they’re going to be the same.

• The coverlines are likely to be in the left third on most of the magazine covers with small notes jotted down around the main image.

FAVORITE MAGAZINE COVER

• This is my favorite magazine cover because the picture isn’t taken from the traditional top angle and shows depth along with texture.

• The colors in the brownies also complement each other and the coverlines don’t detract from the main image.

• Also, the colors that were chosen for the masthead and coverlines go well with the main image by making the main image stand out while not neglecting the coverlines.

COMMON TABLE OF CONTENTS ELEMENTS

• The table of contents commonly features that specific month’s special recipes. Of the few table of contents that I found online, most seemed to be written in chalk lettering and featured the top stories that were going to be featured in that issue.

WHAT DO THE ARTICLES HAVE IN COMMON

• Both spreads use shape to add style to the design. In the first spread, the chips seem to shape the text box and add texture and color while in the second spread the text boxes are geometric and the vegetables don’t influence their shape.• Both spreads feature recipes that seem to revolve

around using healthy ingredients. • Also, both spreads use white space which pleases

the eye and makes the text easier to read.
