Widening participation event success Dr Charlie Dannreuther Dr Mette Wiggen organised a mini open day for our partner school Batley girls‟ school on the 14 March 2012. The students were informed about the School of Politics and International Studies, ESSL Faculty and the University in general with help from Dr Graeme Davies, Ben Ashcroft (student) and Prof. Ray Bush. Herabans Kaur and Paula Sutcliffe, Pathways to Law Co-ordinator and WP Co-

ordinator from Law also helped with the event. The girls were in parallel workshops with their teachers for some of the day and we finished with two speed lectures (given by Charlie and Ray) in a lecture theatre (which they loved) and a tour of the Students‟ Union. 55 girls and 4 teachers attended and the feedback from all was excellent. The group is planning to develop volunteering opportunities for students as part of a programme of new activities over the next two years. They need a pool of enthusiastic and approachable student volunteers to assist in the planning and delivery of these activities. In particular they need help with future visits from local college students.

QUEST OVERSEAS OPPORTUNITIES An opportunity for your students to join Quest Overseas on our community projects in Kenya and Peru this summer. Kenya Water Relief Project – 5 weeks (6 weeks including Kilimanjaro Climb) Quest Overseas has been working with Excellent Development for 7 years to create sustainable water and food supplies in rural, arid areas of Kenya through the construction of sand dams. Ongoing drought in the Makueni region combined with an increasing population and deforestation has led to a severe water shortage in the area. This limited access to clean water and the dry, infertile land makes food resources scarce, and affects both health and incomes in the region. The sand dams provide a simple yet effective way of transforming the landscape, creating a year round drinking water supply. Villa Maria, Peru Construction Project – 4 weeks

Quest Overseas has been working in the shanty town of Villa Maria, Peru for 14 years now. What started out as a simple programme of summer activities and games, has now developed into a year round social project, with a primary school offering free education; art, craft, cooking and sport workshops running all year and stage shows put on for the community every week. More recently, we have also begun a construction project, building simple, solid, warm homes for single mothers with many children. This is making a huge positive impact on the community, with each house costing on average just £500 to build and taking less than a week to erect.

If you would like to find out more about these projects, please email [email protected] or call 01273 777 206. More information about Quest Overseas can also be found on their website.

Institute of Ideas Academy Scholarship Programme Does the idea of grappling with the great existential questions of free will and determinism through the works of Homer and Sophocles, Thomas Paine and Herbert Spencer, Jane Austen and Dostoevsky, Martin Luther and Jean-Paul Sartre, appeal to you? Do you have a passion for the greatest works in the historical, philosophical, classical, and literary cannons? Would you like to spend a long summer weekend in a stimulating and open environment, with interesting, likeminded people from all walks of life? If so, then the The Institute of Ideas Academy, organised by the Institute of Ideas might be of interest. The full price may be a challenge for students, so this year they have launched a new Academy Scholarship Programme for students between the ages of 18-26.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: ALUMNI PROFILE CHRIS CALLAND (POLITICS, 2002-2005) “My first year after graduating was a mixture of time out (to work out what I wanted to do) and office/call centre work. Both convinced me that I wanted to work in a field of endeavour that would enable me to continue my interest and interaction in politics, and use my research and analytical skills developed during my time at Leeds. My overall experience also convinced me that I wanted to live in a vibrant city like Leeds, which was possible by being able to continuing living with friends from

university long after we graduated. I am now an Account Director at London-based PR and lobbying agency PLMR, working with and for national trade associations and charities, as well as private and third sector organisations, on issues ranging from generating positive press coverage, to handling media relations, to advising on corporate reputation management and relations with Government and other stakeholders.” Read full profile
