Competitions

FuturArc Prize and FuturArc Green Leadership Award have celebrated the completion of their 12th cycle, and the BCI Asia Interior Design Awards its 3rd one this year, with the 2019 competitions receiving more entries than ever before, increasing by about 20% from the 2018 cycle. Through these awards, it has shown that we have covered a truly diverse spectrum; they have been extended to include architectural practices and design ideas from more than 10 different nations, and beyond BCI Asia countries.

Carissa, Vivian and the local coordinators like Anton, Jirapan, Loan, Theresa, Yennie, etc., have helped achieve better numbers than before. A big thank you to the team

2019 CYCLE OF FUTURARC PRIZE, FUTURARC GREEN LEADERSHIP AWARD & BCI ASIA INTERIOR DESIGN AWARDS

for their concerted efforts—from contacting potential participants and converting them to registrants, to reminding entrants to submit and finally seeing the submissions through. We would not have gotten this far without dedicated local outreach. Yasir from BCI Australia IT played a crucial role in ensuring that the online judging process had been relatively painless.

Carissa and Vivian also contributed tremendously to a successful jury meeting for FuturArc Prize and FuturArc Green Leadership Award on 8 and 9 March 2019 in the Singapore office. The process saw close to 200 A2-sized panels printed and sorted for the judging process, and converting the Singapore conference room into a critique studio with panels covering almost every inch of the walls and table. With thoughtful preparation, plus an ingenious idea from Vivian, the jury meeting this year went more smoothly than before; the jurors were better able to focus on the task at hand.

What a difference these three competitions have made over the years for BCI Asia and FuturArc, and for design professionals and students, as well as the architectural world as a whole. We have pushed the boundaries of social responsibility, progressive ideas and sustainable designs, especially from emerging countries, such as Indonesia and Vietnam, and up-and-coming companies. Their lack of local resources and facilities had not stopped them, or limit their ability to imagine and inspire a better future, or douse their passion to contribute to a more liveable, harmonious tomorrow.

BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND’S VOLUNTEER GUIDE DOGS DAY – ACTIVITIES IN NZ

A few weeks ago, a few of the Brisbane team used one of our charity days to volunteer at Guide Dogs Queensland. We spent the day rotating around different jobs, which included painting a fence (a horrible shade of green), folding newsletters, as well as cleaning and re-colouring the donation dogs (you can see the team holding them in the photo).

We were then treated to a presentation from a guide dog trainer on the breeding and training programmes. It was a really insightful day, especially learning about the types of guide dogs and that they are not always Golden Retrievers (some past guide dogs included Poodles and Sausage Dogs).

Not all dogs and pups are suited to the Guide Dog programme; they can follow different career paths such as becoming a companion dog, or rehomed with loving families to bring happiness to people in a number of ways. We were lucky enough to meet one of their therapy dogs – a new programme designed to provide dogs (who didn’t make the Guide Dogs programme) to members of the public who suffer non-eye problems. As the programme was brand new, we met the first therapy dog fully trained and ready to be re-homed. As she was a therapy dog, we were able to pet and play with her, but if she were to be a guide dog, we would have had to let her be.

LEAD (Leadership Development & Exploration)

Lead Training Programme kick-started in Indonesia on 24 & 25 April 2019. The programme aims to develop selected staff of BCI Asia. It will be hands-on learning experience for an intensive period of 12 months. These colleagues will gain a better understanding of current issues, challenges and opportunities to fill the competency void in each country, so that they can help shape the company into a dynamic business entity.

Team members of 2019 programme are: Ronal and Yunita from Indonesia; Bac and Hieu from Vietnam; Lex, Aiden and Frank from Malaysia; Margaret from Hong Kong; Christopher from the Philippines; as well as Kim and Carissa from Singapore.

The BCI Build team met each other for the first time and clicked instantly. After first chats and breakfast, they spent a day meeting the local Habitat for Humanity – Indonesia team, and seeing some local sights including Borobudur Temple and the surrounding markets. Climbing the many steep and narrow stairs to the top of the temple was tiring but well worth for the views and smiles from locals they met along the way. After the tour, the team reconvened for dinner, where local Habitat for Humanity staff gave a thorough orientation for the week ahead, including construction safety and building tips.

Everyone was extremely excited on their first day when they visited the village, the site, and most importantly, Tumijah and her four family members (spanning across three generations) who will be living in the house once completed. This was what they had spent months preparing for! After a quick briefing, they began digging and shovelling the ground to start on the foundations. It was after this first day when reality set in—they were going to build a house from scratch. It was going to be an emotional yet worthwhile journey.

Heavy rain put a hold on their progress for half a day. After a site-safety inspection when the rain had stopped, it was

BCI BUILD ROUND-UP

decided they could continue, much to everyone’s delight! Even though the previously dug holes were filled with water, this didn’t deter the team. They started with wiring for the foundation, which then lead to cement mixing. Despite the rain, the team made a lot of progress.

Before heading to the site, the team visited a kindergarten briefly. Everyone enjoyed meeting the children and giving small gifts for the school to distribute. This was a highlight for many in the team, especially for those who are parents themselves. After their visit, the team headed to the house to start their day on-site. The jobs were to wire the rebars, install them into the ground and then fill in with concrete. The team enjoyed singing and dancing together to make the hard work just that little bit easier.

The last day of the construction set everyone’s emotions on high. The team got to work straight away to finish as much as they could. There was much anticipation in the air, as the brick walls slowly started to get higher. The team could finally see four walls coming together. The highlight of the day was when the team gave the keys to the family, and handed over the worksite to the capable local workers who would be finishing the home in the team’s absence.

After months of preparation, the week has ended all too soon. The BCI Build team had made a tangible, life-changing impact to a family in need.

For a week in January 2019, 10 BCI team members flew to Indonesia to build a house for a deserving family. Each day brought its own challenges, however, that didn’t dampen the team’s spirit, in fact, it made the trip all the better.

“We may have changed the homeowners’ lives and futures, but they have changed our lives too.” — Maddy Davies
