If folks are looking for an interesting day or weekend trip, they should consider Bandung. Located about 140 kilometers south east of Jakarta at an altitude of 2,500 feet, Bandung is surrounded by volcanos. The city is probably most famous for the 1955 Asian-African Conference, also known as the Bandung Conference, that marked the beginning of the Non-Aligned Movement. I visited three places north of town that were quite interesting. The first is an art gallery owned by one of Indonesia's foremost artists Sunaryo. The gallery called Selasar Sunaryo (http://www.selasarsunaryo.com) is a beautiful art space with a nice coffee area. Sunaryo himself has had several installations in the US and his son lives in America. He is also building across the street Wot Batu that is going to be lovely rock garden that will open in about two months. For lunch, the dynamic Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil recommended Dusun Bambu http://www.dusunbambu.com/about which is a very attractive restaurant in a larger leisure park. You must pay a modest 10,000 rupees to get in but the food is good and prices are reasonable (60-70,000 rupees for main courses). From there you can head up to one of Indonesia's most accessible volcanos at Tangkuban Perahu. One can drive right up through a beautiful park (again a very modest entrance fee) to the rim. I also recommend taking a short 1 km walk down to a natural hot spring called Kawah Domas. The trail begins at the mosque on the rim (to your right about 500 meters from the crater). You are required to hire a guide for 300,000 rupees, which is annoying but it is fun to be able to get up close to the bubbling pots. From there you can hike out about a half kilometer of a mostly flat trail where your car can meet you so you don't have to make the steep trek back up. Bandung has many nice US and other brand hotels if you want to stay the night. Enjoy!

No to the Mosquito! Malaria Prevention Malaria is a serious disease that is preventable and curable. Malarial parasites are transmitted to humans through a bite from the anopheles mosquito that is infected with the parasite. Following the infective bite, a period of time goes by before the first symptoms appear. This incubation period varies from 7 to 30 days and is dependent on the species of parasite the host is infected with. There are four known species of the malarial parasite. In uncomplicated malaria, symptoms are similar to that of the common flu- fever, chills, sweats, headaches, nausea, vomiting, headaches, body aches and general malaise. Physical findings as assessed by a health profes-sional can include an enlarged spleen and/or liver and mild jaundice (yellowing of the skin). Severe malaria occurs when infections are complicated by organ failure. This is a medical emergency that requires urgent and aggressive treatment. Some types of malarial parasites are associated with relapses that can occur for up to 5 years at irregular intervals. Diagnosis of malaria is through blood testing and obtaining history of exposure. Malaria prophylaxis (applying measures to prevent a specific disease) is recommended for travelers to areas where malaria is endemic, which includes many areas in Indonesia. Infants, small children, pregnant women and individuals with a history of splenectomy should reconsider travelling to regions where the risk of transmission is high. This is because infection in these groups can be more severe (ie. risk of miscarriage and premature labor). Chemoprophylaxis includes administration of antimalarial drugs before, during and for a period of time after travel. Prevention includes application of insect precautions such as insect repellant (containing 30-50% DEET), mosquito nets and light colored clothing that covers exposed skin. Avoid being outside during dusk and dawn when the anopheles mosquito is most active, sleep in rooms with screens over windows and doors and use the air conditioner. There are many types of antimalarial drugs available which can be prescribed based on your health history and travel plans. Antimalarial drugs require administration prior to travel so allow sufficient time for protection. If you are not sure if your travel destination, whether inside or outside of Indonesia, is at risk for malaria, please contact a nurse at the health unit to discuss what precautions you require and which antimalarial drugs are most suitable for you.
Information about Malaria obtained from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and from RN. Deborah Hambric.

WALK TO BALI- Pedometer Challenge! If you have reached Bogor, Bandung, Cirebon or Semarang, collect your pin! Make sure you are tracking your progress on ‘Your Pedometer Log’. Remember, this program is to encourage you to get you up and moving! Your goal is 10,000 steps per day.
Walk to Bali Tip #4: Wear your pedometer ALL THE TIME! This way you can compare each day and aim to increase your steps.
CAUTION: No preventive measure is 100% effective. Immediate medical attention is necessary for fever or influenza-like symptoms within three months after travel in a malaria risk area.
NOTICE: SJHU will be closed every Friday during the month of July only. SJHU will continue operate regular hours on Mondays and Wednesdays.

(7/2) EXCELLENT PEMBANTU AVAILABLE END OF JULY Ibu Neneng will be available to clean, wash/iron clothes at the end of July 2015. She has been my housekeeper for almost three years. Prior to her I have gone through trials with others that just didn’t work out well. Ibu Neneng has been the best by far. She is extremely reliable, diligent and trustworthy. She works full-time, Monday – Friday and does all my grocery shopping once a week. She does drop-off/pick-up of my dry cleaning; washes and irons my clothes. She speaks English very well. She prefers to be a live-out housekeeper. She has worked for US Embassy families for the last 15 years. (continues to next column)

(7/2) Absolutely the best Driver—Truly, THE BEST! Pak Sumardi has been with us since we first arrived in Jakarta. He is smart, maneuvers traffic like champ and is 100% reliable. Pak Sumardi is one of the major keys to our family’s healthy morale here in Jakarta. His English is good. He maintains our car perfectly, gets along very well with our other staff members. He’s been a driver for over 20 years and knows Jakarta inside and out. He anticipates our needs and acts intuitively. He is happy to work! He is not lazy at all, in fact he is always willing to stay late and do what is needed. Pak Sumardi has been my “Mom taxi” while we both work fulltime. He attends my youngest son’s soccer practices as his guardian. Pak S. plays soccer in our yard with our son just because he enjoys being busy and active. Pak Sumardi has a JIS and Embassy badge that allows him to enter the parking areas and run errands for us. We trust him as a driver and care taker, of sorts, for our kids. When my older kids stay out late he is happy to stay and ensure their safe return home. He has an excellent disposition and works hard to please his employer. Pak Sumardi prefers working in South Jakarta, FOA, Essence, Brawijaya areas, but will also consider Kemang. Available August 2 or possibly sooner.
