We’re Making It Easy For You To Volunteer
The Jekyll Island Arts Association is a completely volunteer-run organization that relies upon its members
to be active in volunteering for a number of activities throughout the year. Up to now, members may not have
necessarily heard about all the great opportunities to volunteer, or may not have known who to contact. As
well as the annual festival, we need volunteers year-round for many other JIAA activities.
The effort to recruit and sign-up for volunteer activities will be improved with the new online Sign-Up
Genius site that we will soon be using. When you receive an email from the JIAA with a link to Sign-Up,
clicking on that link will bring you to the web site where you can see the opportunities described, as well as
time-slots and dates. Upon signing up for an activity, you will be asked to enter your name and email address,
and whether or not you wish to join the site for modifying your entry and for ease of future sign-ups. There is
no cost to you for joining. You can also opt to be sent an entry directly to your calendar (Outlook, Mac and
Google) and you will receive a reminder email before the event, with details of the activities you have volun-
teered to perform. When we send you an invitation to sign-up in the near future, we hope that you will
peruse the site and volunteer to assist in one or more of the many JIAA activities throughout the year.

Wasn’t March wonderful for the Jekyll Island Arts
Association?! So many great things taking place! Of
course, the Festival was the biggest and what a glori-
ous Festival! What was your favorite part? There
were so many highlights, but certainly the artwork in-
side Goodyear in the juried art show was spectacular,
as were the items in the shop, and who can forget the
student art tent where students from this year’s classes
displayed their end results?
Thanks to Mahlon Stacy and Craig Patterson of the
Technology Team we had wi-fi capabilities in the
Registration Tent, and of course thanks to all of you
who registered your items online. That made it really
slick – next year we hope to have 100% online regis-
trations.
In March the Scholarship Team from the Arts in
the Schools group met, culminating in interviews of
the finalists. The students were absolutely awesome
and we all agreed they were more mature, composed
and together than any of us were at that age. Look for
the full article elsewhere in this newsletter.
Fast forward to the end of the month and Susie
Corbett introduced the presentation by Tallu Scott at
the Methodist Church on “Jekyll Island – What Hap-
pened After the Millionaires Left”. Once again, we
had a wonderful turnout with people in the kitchen,
hallway, and on every chair available in the Church
from all three of the congregations. Tallu was funny,
informative, captivating and a great speaker, from the
heart. It was a wonderful presentation, and we are
hopeful to be able to obtain one of the videos shot that
night for our website.
If you are reading this, that likely means you paid
your dues. If you have not, please do so right away
so you don’t miss out on anything we are doing. Log-
in on your member page on the website,
www.jekyllartsassociation.org, and if “Pay My Dues”
shows up, that means your dues have expired. Please
take a minute to pay them as soon as possible. Dead-
line WAS April 1.
So…what do all these events have in common, you
might wonder? Volunteers, of course…. without vol-
unteers, JIAA would not exist. Look for the article
elsewhere in this newsletter from our new Volunteer
Coordinator, Lynn Herbert. Lynn is putting together a
list of all members with options to volunteer for a
multitude of task(s). You will receive an email with
a link to the website where she is tracking all volun-
teer activities. Please be sure to help out. Remem-
ber, you only get out of an organization what you
put in. Here’s your chance to help!
And while we are talking about volunteers, any
good organization has succession planning in the
back of its mind and JIAA is no exception. If you
have any basic accounting background, especially
with computerized accounting software, and under-
stand debits and credits, please let Mary Stock
know…we’d like to talk to you.
Have a wonderful spring and summer…if you are
a winter member, have safe travels home, and hope
to see each of you on the paid membership list!

As 2016 Winter classes wrap up, we are proud to report another successful season of JIAA Classes, and a
great response to the Classes tent at the Festival. During that exhibit, we had a pad of paper where visitors
could write down classes they would like to see offered in the next classes sessions. Visitors to the Classes
tent were also excited to see items entered by students and many commented that it was great to be able to see
and look at the end product of classes more closely. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who brought your classes
items to the Festival for display purposes.
As of the Fall 2016 classes session, we are pleased to announce that Sonja Peterson, Secretary of the Board
of Directors, and Sami Fulton will be the New Classes Coordinators. We are certain these two enthusiastic
new recruits will do a wonderful job and we thank them for stepping up to take on this responsibility.
Having done this task for three years, we are pleased to turn it over to two members who will devote their
time and energy to ensuring continued success with our classes offerings. It’s with mixed emotions that we
leave this responsibility behind but we have both accepted new ones that need our attention, and we will be
around to help as needed. It’s been our privilege to serve as Classes Coordinators for the past three years and
we appreciate your support.

WE WANT YOU!!
To check your dues!
Dues for the 2016 / 2017 membership year are now past due and currently 53% of our members are behind on their dues!!
Are you one of them?
If you plan on putting anything into the Goodyear Shop to sell, your dues must be up to date first. I happen to know the lady who is in charge of the shop and her resolve is firm, unpaid dues means nothing goes into the shop.
So, please check the status of your dues, you can check and renew them on our website in the Mem-bers Only area, or you can mail in a check or you can stop in at Goodyear and pay by check or credit card. However, you want to do it, just do it.
We Want YOU!!

ARTS IN THE SCHOOLS
MUSIC/PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP
Jane Battles
Patricia Bowman
Susie Corbett
Anne Jennings
Betty Smith
Bonnie Householder
On Sat., Mar. 19, the Music/Performing Arts Scholarship Team of Jane Battles, Patricia Bowman, Susie
Corbett, Anne Jennings, Betty Smith and Bonnie Householder met at Goodyear to interview the final six can-
didates for the first ever JIAA Performing Arts Scholarship.
Jane Battles taught us the value of using a rubric to judge first the components of the applications and then
the interview. The initial review of the application information demonstrated a score range based on how well
the applicants read and followed directions, the quality of their information, GPAs, and even whether the ap-
plication was legible.
We interviewed each candidate in teams of two using pre-assigned questions. The students remained in
one of the second floor rooms as we rotated into the individual rooms. After the end of the interviews, we met
to discuss our findings. We were all in concurrence regarding the top candidate.
Our top candidate is a senior this year at Glynn Academy, has been accepted at Auburn, Mercer, Jackson-
ville University, Wesleyan, Tulane, Rollins and Boston College. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction
(conferred August 2015), has been Principal Clarinetist for the Glynn Academy Wind Ensemble four years,
plays piano and handbells, has had classical voice coaching for six years, and has a theatrical lengthy resume
outlining 21 plays in which she has performed, as well as additional training in theatre, voice, and workshops.
She was the Mozart Scholarship Winner 2011-15, has written a one act play which was performed by a youth
ensemble, and ranks 17th in her class.
We are pleased to announce Ann Marie Morrison is our 2015 Performing
Arts Scholarship winner. Ann Marie is the daughter of Hal and Suzanne
Morrison of St. Simons Island. She has not yet decided which school she will
attend in the fall.
Congratulations, Ann Marie!
