UWIFC’s journey to the loftyheights of the Premier League isbeginning to look more like a

full canter, with recent results reinforcingtheir bid to play with the big boys nextseason. Strong defensive displays andbrilliant attacking strategies have increasedthe belief of the team and its supporters.

Marching on from a 4-1 drubbing ofBagatelle 9 days prior, the Blackbirdsdefeated minnows Kick Start at home inOrange Hill and then went on to draw withEllerton FC 0-0.

The Blackbirds then faced Kick StartFC for a second encounter in 5 days, thistime, thrashing them 5-0. It took 26 minutesfor the opening goal to come, after ascrappy goalmouth scramble in the KickStart penalty area. Carlo Perry put the ballin the net after the keeper parried a RivereWilliams shot. Three second half goals thencame within 7 minutes of the restart tocompletely knock the stuffing out of UWI’sbeleaguered opponents, with Barrowscoring two and assisting substitute RenoShepherd for the other. Barrow completedhis hat trick 12 minutes before the end of

regulation time. Fourth placed Porey Springs FC was

next. Despite finding difficulty at times tobreak through the team’s stubborn defence, relief finally came in the 85th minute aftera brilliant piece of individual skill by the in-form Barrow. Jeremy Bradshaw ran on toBarrow’s back-heeled pass and finishedincisively to give UWIFC a precious leadand eventual triumph.

More points came when UWIFCwelcomed Empire Club to Orange Hill 3days later. UWIFC began with blisteringpace, earning a penalty after just 2 minutesof play. Top scorer Rivere Williams, endinga barren streak of 4 games, dispatched thespot kick with calm precision to giveUWIFC the early lead. Ten minutes later,Barrow scored a magnificent, lowswerving shot to double the advantage. Thematch ended 2-1 in favour of theBlackbirds.

The Blackbirds remain on course forpromotion to the Digicel Premier Leaguehaving collected 38 points from 15 games.

UWIFC made the perfect riposte on Sunday bydefeating powerhouse and defending championsRendezvous FC in the KFC Champions Cup in a

titanic 3rd round clash on a star-studded night at the NationalStadium.

Both teams struggled to assert authority early on but afterthe initial 10 minutes, Rendezvous slowly began to dictateproceedings with slick passing as they attempted to pullapart the Blackbirds’ backline. The Blackbirds defendedwell to ensure no early mishaps.

Shock and awe overcame the packed Stadium, as UWI pulledahead after 16 minutes through striker Carlo Perry. Joyouscelebration erupted as UWI had managed their first goal againstthis opposition in this the third meeting, losing 1-0 in March and2-0 a week prior.

However, Rendezvous eventually capitalized on theirpersistent forays forward and vast technicality and power, and gotin behind the Blackbirds’ backline. Centre back Tito Beckles, inan effort to make a last ditch challenge, brought down aRendezvous striker and the referee promptly signaled for apenalty kick which was converted by the opposition’s captain,Jeffrey Williams.

There was another twist in the plot seconds before the halftime whistle as a mix up between UWI’s goalie Tazieo Riley andone of his defenders gifted Rendezvous a scoring opportunity, which they gleefully accepted.

UWI knew they needed a swift response in the second half andafter a cautious restart, top scorer Riverre Williams was broughton to add some spark to the UWI offense. Coach RicardoGoddard was forced into another substitution soon after, ascaptain Shane Weekes had to be stretchered off due to a headinjury.

UWI came close on many occasions but nothing significantwas forthcoming. Rendezvous had great chances as well butthese were foiled by a string of magnificent saves by none otherthan Tazieo Riley, who kept the team in the game and well in thehunt for an equalizer.

That blessed goal came in the 71st minute after anuncharacteristic mistake from the opposing keeper who flappedat a cross from the right, completely missing it and leavingShaquille Layne with the impossible task of missing the emptynet.

Controversy ensued in the dying moments of the half as CoreyBarrow was booked for an apparent dive. After his prolongedprotest, he was dismissed by the referee leaving UWI to endregulation time and begin extra time with 10 men.

It was backs-against-the-wall time for UWI in extra time asRendezvous ruthlessly went about trying to make their numerical

advantage pay dividends. Tazieo Riley again pulled off someterrific saves in extra time to thwart any promising attacks. As thehalf wore on and legs grew tired, both teams seemingly settled forwhat they had and left it up to the lottery of the penalty shootout.

Nerves all around the Stadium as UWI’s Jason Carter steppedup to take the first penalty which he scored, in off the left post toput his team 1-0 up in the shootout. Keeper Riley did well to savepenalties from Gregory “Lalu” Goodridge and Romano Snagg, and with Riverre Williams and Carlo Perry scoring theirpenalties, victory loomed large. After Paul “Soup” Lovell scoredfor Rendezvous, Tito Beckles hit the eventual winner andsubsequently dashed off to celebrate with the UWI camp. A toughevening ending in a hard fought triumph and well deservedprogression to the next round.

The UWI Division 1 football team is well poised togain promotion to the Premier League ofBarbadian football. Notwithstanding the teams’overall performance, the contribution of Corey‘Santa’ Barrow is well acknowledged. The 30-year-old attacker has been crucial in theBlackbirds’ Division 1 campaign scoring 8 leaguegoals and 1 knockout goal this season. His ability was recognized when he startedplaying football for Youth Milan and then Carlton. He was subsequently drafted into the BarbadosDefence Force Sports Program for 4 years thenreturned to his first club for another 4 yearsbefore enrolling at the University of the WestIndies Cave Hill campus to pursue a BSc inSports Science. Now, a proud Blackbird! Affectionately known as Santa because of hischubby size as a young boy, the outstandingfootballer represented Barbados at the under-20and under-23 level.

At the end of the 2014 edition of the BHF Indoor Hockey heldover the Easter weekend, the University of the West IndiesBlackbirds Hockey Club (UWIBHC) walked away with 3rd

and 4th place in the Men’s and Women’s categories respectively. Both teams impressed in round-robin play. In the Women’s

competition, new recruits such as D’Jamila Edwards and Shalana Payneboosted the squad. They combined well with the UWIBHC regulars tosee the squad play undefeated and qualify for the semifinals, as thenumber one ranked team. Although the men could not replicate thewomen’s exact performance, they were led by key contributions fromBarbados National players Justin Catlin and Captain to performimpressively and qualify for the semifinals, losing only one of fourmatches.

The Women’s semifinal saw the Blackbirds face the CombermereSchool Old Scholars (CSOS). Despite both teams being evenly matchedthroughout the early exchanges, it was CSOS who drew first blood withtwo goals before the halftime break. The Blackbirds were able to pull onegoal back in the second half through an effort from Shernelle Oneale butcould not find the equalizer, losing 2-1. The men also took on CSOS intheir semifinal but could not hit the target, eventually losing 3-0 afterconceding goals from two penalties and a penalty corner.

After the semifinal defeats, Avengers stole the podium finish from theBlackbirds in the Women’s third place play-off with a 3-0 victory, whilethe men enjoyed a default win against an absent YMCA to claim thirdplace. Shane Lewis copped the award for Best Defender.

The UWI Blackbird FemaleFootball Club (UWIBFFC)participated in the 27th

Annual Barbados Cup tournament heldat the Dover Playing Field in ChristChurch during April 13th – 17th.

UWIBFFC, coached by Mr. TitoBeckles a UWIFC Men’s Division Ifootball player, was very eager toparticipate in their first tournament ofthe year since commencing training lastOctober. It was the first time that theteam played together.

The tournament was keenlycontested, with the finalists being thetop two teams at the end of the roundrobin leg. The four teams involved inthe tournament were Empire, ‘Ministryof Sport’ (MOS) Schools from Trinidad, the National Sports Council (NSC) andUWIBFFC. The UWI femalescombined experienced players PatrinaBrathwaithe, Rhea Holder and TamishaMarshall with the some of the newupcoming talent in the team to ablymatch and even outplay some of theiropponents.

Day one resulted in a 0-0 drawagainst the NSC, the defending BFABarbados Cup Champions. Both teamshad opportunities to score but theUWIBFFC defended well andunfortunately could not hit the target.

Day two saw UWI triumph againstthe Empire ladies 1-0 with the lone goalnetted by Patrina ‘Pixie’ Brathwaithe.

Day three, which was expected to bethe toughest against eventualchampions MOS from Trinidad, alsoended in a goalless draw. The MOSteam consisted of very experiencedplayers from various football clubs inTrinidad. Remarkably, the effortsdisplayed by UWIBFFC were amazingdespite needing more practice and game

experience. The ladies from UWI werenot daunted by the strength and skillsdisplayed by MOS Schools as theydefended astutely to keep the scoregoalless.

At the end of day four, theUWIBFFC was third in the standingsmerely losing out on the second placefinish to the N.S.C based on goaldifference. Although they did notqualify for the finals, it was an excellentshowing by a newly formedUWIBFFC. The efforts displayed by allwere greatly noticed on the fieldthroughout the tournament especiallyfrom Shanelle Als, Akeila Flemmingand Malissa Betham. Even though itwas the first dose of playingcompetitively for some, the youngladies did well for a new team with anew coach.

The future looks bright for the UWIfemale football team and expectationsare high for continued favourableresults from the young ladies.

the end of regulation time. Bolinder and Schroter calmly convertedtheir penalties to send Coconut Bread into the final, where the teamdefeated Pepper Sauce by a 3-0 margin to take home the Cup.

“It’s a great feeling to win the inaugural Barbados Cup and bevoted MVP. I could not have done it without Erik, Karola and ‘UnclePete’. It was an honour to play with them” said Roach in an interviewwith IBN reporters. “I also received great experience playing againstGerman stalwarts Olaf Funke and Mark Dyckmanns.

When asked what’s next he responded “First I need to learn toshoot [laughs]. I didn’t score as many goals as I should have but Iintend to work on the weak areas of my game in preparation for theZurich Cup in Germany later this year. I will also continue workingwith the Segway Polo Club to develop the sport.”
