Closer look at peter pan

where In the world Is peter pan From?

• PETER PAN was originally written by author J.M. Barrie and later adapted for this production by playwright Tommy Murphy. In writing his version, Murphy sought out to capture his own childhood through Peter Pan’s story. The entire performance takes place in the bedroom of a 1980s suburban home. Did you know... Wendy as a first name originated from Barrie’s play Peter Pan in 1904?

• This is Belvoir’s second presentation with The New Victory Theater. In 2012, they enthralled audience members with their remarkable production of The Book of Everything.

• Director Ralph Myer and the cast spent hours of rehearsal playing childhood fantasy games. They even played hide and seek during their breaks.

"John, wake up! There is a boy here who is to teach us to fly!" With no green tights in sight, this wild and unique PETER PAN lands on the New Victory stage with a dream ensemble via the brilliant imagination of Sydney's Belvoir (The Book of Everything, New Vic 2012). Aided by a bit of fairy dust, ingenious stage magic and lots of happy thoughts, the Darlings' bedroom becomes a lagoon full of mermaids, a pirate ship at sea and a cove overrun with lost boys as they explore J.M. Barrie's Neverland. Under the spell of infectious make-believing, you and your students are sure to un-grow up and fly along with them: second star to the right and straight on till morning!

• Peter and the Darlings would have a very long flight to Neverland if they decided to travel along the beach—Australia's coastline stretches approximately 16,000 miles!

• Did you know Australia is the only country that also spans a continent? It is the largest country in the world.

theatrICal adaptatIon: Plays you see on stage are often adapted from books, movies, and stories that are re-told by playwrights in new, unique ways. Belvoir’s production of PETER PAN is adapted by playwright Tommy Murphy from the original 1904 pantomime manuscript of Peter Pan; the story, When Wendy Grew Up: An Afterthought published 1908; the novel Peter and Wendy published in 1911; and the play Peter Pan or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up, published in 1928. It is also important to note that many other on-stage and film adaptations of Peter Pan have become popular over the past 70 years, such as Disney’s cartoon adaptation in 1953, the on-stage musical starring Mary Martin in 1954, and Mabou Mines’ Peter and Wendy, seen on the New Vic stage in 1997, 2002 and 2011. Researching older works to create new work requires a dramaturg–someone who consults, researches and makes informed suggestions to develop a play. While your students watch this play, ask them to notice the parts of the story they are familiar with and the parts of the story that are new to them.

ImagInatIve storytellIng: In Belvoir’s production of PETER PAN, the company performs this classic play with an imaginative twist. Instead of traditional sets, props and costumes, the entire play takes place in the Darling children’s bedroom (based on a 1980s suburban home). Bunk beds become ships, mattresses become alligators, and forts are made of sheets. This style of storytelling requires that the audience use their imagination to build their own Neverland, and participate in one big game of make-believe, thereby showing your students the thin line between theater and play.

Prior to exploring PETER PAN with your students, find out how much they already know about theatrical adaptation and imaginative storytelling. In addition, allow them to explore the themes of growing up and make-believe. Use the Prior Knowledge questions below, and the Creativity Page handout (next page) to get a sense of your students’ understanding of the art forms and themes in the show. You may be surprised by how much they know already, and in the process of exploring these areas, you’ll spark their curiosity about the show and enhance their anticipation for the trip.

Some RoomS aRe Not What they Seem...

In the show PETER PAN, the performers create the different places in Neverland using furniture and objects that you might find in your own room. Design a pirate ship for Captain Hook to set sail in Neverland using only the bedroom objects pictured above, in the space provided.
