CONTENTS

W elcome to the September/October edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park.

A lot of people have been saying that this Editor’s Letter is becoming somewhat flat. So, to improve my style, I’ve been on a course for creative writing. Quite good. 14 days residential in Hawaii. And so, as the sands of time pass inexorably through the ineluctable hourglass of life itself, I see that this letter, like a bud that unfurls in the flower bed of hope, must blossom too, opening its petals to the winds of change before falling into the fertile soil of posterity.

Also, the football is back on telly. It’s like a pink sapphire that gleams in the dusky mines of autumn…er…blow this for a game of soldiers...I’m phoning Hawaii for my money back.

T his is another story of the quite-goods. Of the runners-up, the also rans and the ones that just ran

away. Of the flames that never flared too fiercely, or flickered for a while and then faded. We’re not all immortals. Some of us are quite good, though. And some of the quite-goods have their moments, when they flicker and fade. In the 1830s and ‘40s, William Harrison Ainsworth was feted as the sole rival to Dickens, the greatest novelist in the land. England’s own successor to Walter Scott. By the 1850s, he was going out of fashion. Nowadays, you won’t find his works in print. He’d flared fiercely, then faded. Now don’t get me wrong. I’ll defend Manchester against anyone. Everything that I know about bacteria, I learnt there. (Funnily enough, I was studying music- it’s just that our flat was dead dirty.) In the early part of the 19th century, well, one has to admit it, it wasn’t the loveliest place in the world. It wasn’t even the loveliest place in Lancashire. Nevertheless, that was where the young Ainsworth grew up. But Uncle William did not live in Manchester. Not for him that bleak city, that hotchpotch of dated architecture, Tudor and Gothic, dark and foreboding. Uncle William lived in leafy Cheshire, and, when summer holidays came round, his nephew, William Harrison Ainsworth, would visit.

There he heard thrilling tales - of the supernatural, of adventurers and highwaymen, of forests and haunted manors. His uncle’s stories triggered something in the young lad’s imagination, and, on his return to the Manchester home, Ainsworth took to the moors at the edge of the city, there to play out with his younger brother scenes that he remembered from his uncle’s house. Ghosts. Blood. Clanking suits of armour that chase you. Evil villains and fair maidens.

When he was 14, he was able to put on little dramas with family and friends on a stage at home. Imagination burned inside him. In 1826, when he was 21, he married the daughter of a publisher. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve got nothing against publishers – or their daughters – I’m just saying, is all. Anyhow, Ebers published Ainsworth’s first novel.

His first real success came in 1834 with the novel Rookwood, a Gothic romance about the flight of Dick Turpin from London to York. It glorifies somewhat the highwayman’s crimes and lifestyle, but we cannot disapprove. These days true crime books fly off shelves in libraries (at least in the ones where they still do books), dwelling with questionable relish on their

misdeeds. More criminal romance followed, including Jack Shepherd, which featured a daring escape from Newgate. This Idiots’ Guide to jail-breaking, whilst doubtless popular with prisoners, was too much for many critics, and Ainsworth turned his attention to the historical romance.

Here too he was successful. It’s just that, to our modern senses, the research that has gone into these novels is a little too obvious. Endless pages describe the horrors of the plague. Elsewhere, the Tudor world is brought to life in microscopic detail. One wants to shout “Enough, already!” although one is not strictly speaking American.

Written in 1840, The Tower of London, the story of Lady Jane Grey, has the lot. It’s a cornucopia of

the bizarre. Dwarves, giants, and plenty of horrendous torture. Food. Beer. Vague Victorian hints at naughtiness. Dungeons. Passageways.

It all appealed to the Victorian public. They could ooh and aah, but they could also tisk and tut. The perfect reaction. Old Saint Paul’s and Windsor Castle followed. Between 1834 and 1854, he wrote 15 best-selling novels. But the public’s appetite was waning, and with it his fortune. By 1870, he was submitting Penny Dreadfuls to the Bow Bells magazine. A once celebrated author was reduced to – I can hardly bring myself to say it – to sending articles to

magazines.

He’d had his moment. He’d flickered and then faded.

HAVE FUN LEARNING TO PLAY BRIDGE Ray Green invites you to join the East London Bridge Club. I decided to join one of Ray’s bridge courses to try it for myself. I know a few people who play bridge and find it a stimulating and sociable game. I had also interviewed Ray for the articles in The Chingford Directory for 2011, 2012 and 2013. The article also appeared in The West Essex Directory in 2012 and 2013.

There were about 12 new players when I joined and Ray started us off with games of mini bridge progressing to bridge. I found the lessons were well planned and challenging and Ray gave us lots of mate-rial to follow up each lesson. It was fun learning with others and there was always plenty of support and encouragement from Ray and the other players. This is what Ray said,

“Bridge is a trick taking game of skill and chance played by four players who form two partnerships; the partners sit opposite each other at the table.

Bridge can be a lifelong pursuit and a learning process that never ends. It can be exciting, challeng-ing, frustrating but never boring.

It is a social card game that includes strategy, trust and teamwork. You can develop friendships with others who are learning and already playing bridge. It is also a great way to sharpen your memory and exercise the brain.

Once you have learnt the basics of bridge you are able to practice with friends. The only cost is a cou-ple of packs of cards and the tea and biscuits.

From Monday 26th October I shall be giving eve-ning lessons from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. These will be on every Monday except Christmas and bank holidays.

I am offering a 32-lesson course that will cover all aspects of this interesting game and help you to be ready to play in one of the many local bridge clubs.

Each 2-hour lesson including a tea/coffee and bis-cuit break is £10 per person. You only pay for the lessons you attend and will be given the opportunity to cover missed lessons on a later course. On these lessons you will be partnered with another member of the class. You are of course welcome to join with one or more friends and learn in a relaxing, comfort-able home environment.

Later in this course I also offer supervised bridge play. There is a 2 hour supervised play session on Thursday evenings 7.30-9.30pm for £5 per person.

For those who wish to improve their bridge play I organise intermediate evening lessons on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 7.30 – 9.30pm.”

If you are thinking of joining Ray’s course and would like to take advantage of the special beginner’s offer send your cheque for £25 with your name, address, home and mobile phone numbers to Ray at the address below. For more details contact Ray on 020 8281 8376 or go to www.eastlondonbridge.co.uk.

SPECIAL BEGINNER’S OFFER To help you experience the challenging nature of this game I am offering you the first 5 lessons at 1/2 price when paid for in advance. Payment to arrive before 16th October. T he Dennyside Bowling Association is a national charity based organisation that helps local

bowling clubs raise monies for local charities and worthy causes. Woodford Bowling Club recently hosted ‘Dennyside’ for an afternoon of bowling and fundraising for a charity of their choice. The ‘Dennyside’ President, Brian Tarrel also a member of Woodford Bowling Club, chose Chigwell Riding Trust for Special Needs as his nominated charity. “This is a wonderful organisation with a dedicated team that has given an

immense amount of pleasure to those with special needs and it benefits the whole community.”

A short presentation by Deborah and one of the riders, Piers Bloomfield, who is an avid fan of the Trust touched the hearts of the Dennyside members and a cheque for £2,600 was presented to the charity.

Deborah Hall, Manager of the Trust said “I had a wonderful afternoon with Dennyside Bowling Club at Woodford Bowls. Following my presentation and a very moving speech from one of our riders ‘Piers Bloomfield’ I was presented with a cheque for £2,600 which was a phenomenal amount. I can’t thank them enough for their generosity.”

As pet owners we want to do what is best for our pets, however this can of-ten be expensive. A broken leg can cost over £2,000 to fix, or a lifelong condi-tion like diabetes, over £60 per month just for medication.

For many of us these kinds of costs would be difficult to cope with and this is why Vets tend to promote getting pet insurance. But beware, not all pet insurance is equal and if you don’t know to ask the right questions you could have a nasty surprise when you come to claim.

The cost of pet insurance will vary dependant on the species, breed and age of your pet, however here are a few universal questions you may want to consider when choosing pet insurance:

Does it cover ongoing illness? Will it cover an illness for the life of your pet? What is the cover limit? Is the cover limit for the life of the pet or per

year? How much is the excess? Is the excess per condition, a one off or charged

annually for ongoing illnesses? Will it cover multiple unrelated illnesses? Are there any exclusions due to your pets

breed? Pet insurance is a great way to protect you and your pet from the unforeseen future. Most Vets will be happy to offer advice if your you’re unsure on any aspect.

Choosing a new kitchen is an exciting prospect, you may have wanted to change the kitchen in your house for many years and had to save up for the replacement. Kitchens aren’t cheap! Alternatively you might be moving house and have decided that the kitchen in the new place has to go! When thinking about replacing your kitchen there are many choices to make. Firstly you have the big decisions such as choosing your door style, the colours/textures and worktop type. Even within these areas there is a staggering amount of choice and each comes with its own benefits or disadvantages. Then there are the appliances of which there are all the various brands, models and features to look at. There will often be flooring to do, wall tiling or glass splashbacks, the list goes on! Something that is important to consider which is sometimes overlooked is how your lifestyle may change in the future. Kitchens are a significant investment and they are designed to last many years and over that time circumstances can change. For younger people they may be starting a family and having children. In this case they should be considering the safety aspects of having small people running around. This would mean avoiding sharp edges (especially on worktop corners) which could lead to accidents. Another safety conscious design is to have the hob and the sink on the same side of the kitchen. This allows you to carry a pan of boiling water to the sink over the worktops and not have to cross the room where young children may get under your feet.

The choice of materials would also be worth looking at as the durability of surfaces is important if toys or other items may be bashed against the kitchen doors. For example a vinyl door would be much more resilient to this type of treatment than a painted or lacquered door. In terms of finish a gloss door will show up fingerprints, marks or dirt far more easily than a matt texture door. This can be applicable to adults as well as children! In other instances grown up children may be leaving home. This would allow for some reduction of storage space and there would be scope to incorporate some design features which favour aesthetics over cupboard space. Some examples of this would be to leave walls blank of wall cupboard to give the room a feeling of space and openness. Wall shelves can be a good feature giving display/storage space and yet not feeling as heavy as wall units and letting more light around the room especially if near a window. Older buyers may be planning to retire. A retiree may decide they don't want to be bending down so much in the future. Designs incorporating eye level ovens, pull out storage systems and more drawers rather than cupboards would be useful for those with stiffness or mobility issues. Each of these situations needs careful consideration and the requirements of your individual needs should be addressed and thought through before your new kitchen is planned and fitted. Thinking and discussing your future requirements will allow you make right the decisions and make choices that give you a beautiful kitchen which is suitable for your needs for many years to come.

Upon coming to the throne in 1603, King James I finds alarming evidence that Anne was a religious conspirator, in love with Henry VIII but also with the most dangerous ideas of her day. She comes alive for him, a brilliant but reckless young woman, whose marriage and death transformed England forever.
