Huddersf ield based recruitment special ists, Staf f lex, have signed a three year deal to sponsor one of the fastest growing sports foundat ions in the north of England.

The Leslie Foundation at Storthes Hall Park, was set up by local businessmen and philanthropists Graham and Craig Leslie in 2013 to help provide affordable access to high quality training and coaching facilit ies for amateur sports enthusiasts. Since taking over the 99 year lease from the University of Huddersf ield, the multi-sports complex has more than trebled in size and has plans to grow even more.

?Staff lex has a long tradition of sponsoring local projects across a wide range of activit ies. We?ve also been very loyal supporters of Huddersf ield Town. However, the set up at Storthes Hall Park and the commitment shown to helping grassroots sports, community groups and especially the disabled, is just breath-taking. We see a great f it between our values of ?helping others? and the values that drive the foundation forward. It?s a major investment for us but we believe it to be the most exciting partnership we have ever signed up to. We can?t wait to get involved?, says Brian Stahelin, managing director and founder at Staff lex.

Plans are now well under way to rename the complex The Staff lex Arena, with the road leading into the site being renamed The Staff lex Way.

STAFFLEX ANNOUNCES MAJOR INVESTMENT INTO SHELLEY FC COMMUNITY SPORTS SPONSORSHIP

The current programme of events include the f inal matches of the season for the 32 football teams that make up Shelley FC with many of the region?s cup f inals scheduled to take place throughout April and May.

In addition to the 32 Shelley Football Club teams that reside at the Staff lex Arena, and the hosting of many of the local league and end of season semi-f inals and f inals, several other teams are now using the site including the University of Huddersf ield who continue to run their football and hockey teams there and will shortly be hosting their Varsity matches against Bradford University. Huddersf ield Town Ladies are also based at the Arena.

The site also plays host to other sporting events with Huddersf ield Star Wheelers and Stadium Runners both holding events there over the next few months. This Easter Monday sees the site play host to an International Festival of Orienteering with hundreds of world class competitors due to compete for the f irst t ime in Huddersf ield.

?The country setting, with easy access to the major motorways, plus the quality of the terrain, has attracted the attention of one of the sport?s leading experts. They have done several site visits to measure out the course and to get to see the terrain in dif ferent weather conditions and have described the venue as having, ?? an interesting mix of terrain, including beautiful fast runnable forest,

open areas and university campus. It has been remapped and extended specif ically for the event. The arena provides good views and great opportunities for seeing some parts of the races. A covered seating arena with a café overlooks the elite spectator control, and there will be additional catering services supplemented by the usual sports club facil it ies,? says Gary Millar, volunteer and committee member at Shelley FC.

Nadio Granata, head of marketing at Staff lex says, ?Partnering with the Leslie Sports Foundation will give Staff lex access to a growing family of l ike-minded, local people who are as passionate about sport as they are about our community.

?No that?s not a spel l ing mistake or a word we?ve just made up? ? says David Broadhead, owner and founder of Partners in Management Ltd, a leading regional centre for execut ive management and leadership development and based at the Media Centre, Huddersf ield.

?Intrapreneurs are the real deliverers of growth and productivity and they are those individuals that can combine the essential skil l sets of being a successful manager, leader and entrepreneur to either develop high-growth businesses or reform essential public sector services.?

?The latest released f igures show that UK labour productivity as measured by output per hour fell by 1.2% from the third to the fourth calendar quarter of 2015 and is some 14% below the pre-downturn trend, which just confirms that the government?s emphasis on managerial eff iciency and so called entrepreneurial activity isn?t working. In fact, you could argue that the more entrepreneurs we have, the less productive we become nationally.?

Since 2010, Partners in Management has focussed on developing and delivering what is probably the UK?s most innovative nationally recognised development programme for practising, experienced professionals from across all sectors.

Mid 2016 we will see the 200th participant join a 21st Century Leaders course, which is designed in such a way to help overcome the main barriers to training facing all organisations, namely that of t ime, cost and most importantly credibil ity. In the past participants have come from all sectors and included sole-traders and micro-businesses right through to local government and the NHS, and continue to do so. We like to practice what we preach though, and through the

application of lean innovation and design thinking have formulated an intensive seven-day programme, delivered one day per month to small groups of no more than twelve and backed up by state-of-the-art on-line learning platforms. The incredibly low cost and high value is further enhanced for those organisations that can access the Leeds City Region LEP funding, of which we are in the top 6% of multi-application providers. Credibil ity is assured through the programme being nationally recognised at a developmental level by the Chartered Management Institute after which suitable participants can continue on to a nationally approved graduate or masters level management and leadership qualif ication if they so wish. In under f ive years we have grown this business by a factor of seven and are already looking this year at a third year in four of over 100% annual sales growth.?

By this time next year though, we could well be in the grip of a very severe economic recession with the associated additional public

sector cut-backs. Have you and your leadership team got the knowledge, attitude and skills necessary to see this one through?

Welcome to Apri l 's edit ion of member of the month . This month we are pleased to int roduce you to Maria Cot ton Business Development Manager for Kirklees Markets

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Please give a brief descript ion of your organisat ion: Kirklees Markets, with two large markets in the town centre, we represent over 200 businesses trading within Huddersf ield.

1. Why did your organisat ion join the partnership? We see the links between the businesses we represent and the other town centre businesses as vital to the vibrancy of the whole town centre. Through the partnership we can share concerns, ideas and meet other likeminded businesses and work together to improve and keep Huddersf ield town centre vibrant.

2. What are your aspirat ions for Markets during 2016? We have steered the markets through the very dif f icult trading climate of the past few years and we hope to continue to do this over the coming year. In Queensgate Market our main aims are to continue to attract new and varied businesses as we have done over the past few years. We now have wrap bars, Thai food, will writ ing, tattoo studio, massage, beauty treatments including microdermabrasion and even Botox! The market is evolving to meet the changing needs to the customers to the town centre.

At Brook Street Market we have a second-hand market on Saturday which is one of the largest and best in the North and we are looking at

ways to develop the antique and vintage aspects of this market and the shops close to the market. We also have the monthly Upmarket Sunday event, now in its third year, which we are keen to see continue to grow and develop.

We are also part of the campaign to grow the Sunday shopping offer in Huddersf ield. We are opening Queensgate Market open once a month, the Upmarket Sunday market once a month at Brook Street market and our youth market taking place every month on New Street outside Primark.

3. Give three words to describe your organisat ion? independent, entrepreneurial and affordable

4. Give us three words about yoursel f? passionate, determined and supportive

5. What do you think are the main chal lenges for Markets across the region? Main challenges to markets, l ike al retailers the market industry is facing very tough trading conditions and will continue to face stif f competit ion from supermarkets, out of town shopping development and online shopping. Also in our local area we are seeing a rise in farm shops, not just selling their own, or local produce, but almost becoming mini-supermarkets. These are having a negative impact on the food offer in the town centres and this may decline even further in the coming years. Like all small businesses, we are concerned about business rates and what the future may hold, although at the moment the news is positive.

6. What was your proudest achievement within your career history? have lots of proud moments working in markets and watching new businesses f lourish and grow. One tenant I worked closely with to help start a business in 2013,

now owns four businesses which are trading well, we have also won several market industry awards however kick-starting the recent Sunday shopping init iative in Huddersf ieldand seeing the huge will of the independent businesses to work with one another to revitalise Huddersf ield is possibly my proudest achievement.

7. Have you ever met anyone famous, please tel l us about i t (keep it short )? I?ve met quite a few famous people but the nicest person was Bobby Charlton who I met on a place when I was only 15 and travelling alone. He helped me with my suitcase when we landed in Lisbon despite him being inundated with Manchester United fans on the plane all asking him questions and taking photos.

8. If you could pass on one single piece of advice to a child/ young musician, what would it be? Accept all offers of help and get involved in networks and groups who can help and recommend you to others. Starting a business can be very lonely and you need to keep involved with others especially those in similar situations. If you?re looking for a town centre location, take a look at the markets, they are low cost and you benefit from the other businesses in there. However don?t expect overnight success, it takes a long time to establish a retail business.

9. If you could change something about Huddersf ield what would it be? it would be great to open up the town centre so it is visible from the ring-road. The buildings on the ring-road do form a bit of a ?wall? so you can?t see what?s inside the town.

10. If you could give the Partnership some advice what would it be? Good collaborative partnerships in the town centre working together to promote the town and encourage shoppers.
