of six massive stone columns, two o n

each side and one in front of each pier supporting the maim arches. Upon ped-estals atop of these columns,' gsanite statues about 18 f e e t high are placed, those on the west side of the entrance represenf irng P~ometheus and ThaEes, typifying Fire and Electricity, those on the east side, Ceres sad Archimedes,

typi fying A,qricuEture and Mechanics, while Freedom a d Imaginatiolt a r e de-picted by the central figures. Those on the west side represent two of the great

forces connected with the operation of railroads, those on the east owe much of their development and wealth to the rail-roads. The central figures typify the. atmosphere of freedom in zevhich the in-ventive imaginatio~zhas been able -to ac-

complish suck great results. The columm ' f ink ing the ' carriage
