BACKGROUND THE SOLUTION Leroux & Lotz Technologies (LLT) has a strong focus on innovation through Research & Development and annually invests up to 4 % of it’s turnover into R&D projects. Ever since the fluidized bed technology portfolio was acquired from TPS Sweden in 2010, it was the strong desire from the LLT management team to invest in a pilot scale facility. Plans were developed and after a lengthy consenting process this vision came to realisation when the groundworks adjacent to LLT’s workshop in Nantes commenced in March 2016. The main purpose of the facility is to demonstrate capability of suc- cessfully utilising the client’s proposed fuel and optimising operational parameters. It will also be used to train commissioning engineers to fine tune the system and client’s operators to understand the process and how to operate the system. During the summer months the heat generated in the process goes “ins blauen hinein” via a heat dump but during the colder months it is utilised for space heating of our work- shops. The design brief to the engineers at LLT was to develop a multifunc- tional fluidized bed system that could operate in both bubbling mode (BFB) and circulating mode (CFB) and also both in combustion or gasi- fication mode. The system is fitted with a cracker which will be used in gasification mode to remove tars to improve the quality of the syn- gas generated. Also a sophisticated flue gas treatment is installed by means of a pulsejet baghouse with reactant dosing to meet the strict emission regulations. The facility, aptly named Innov’Energy is capable of combusting/ gasifying a wide range of solid fuels either biomass derived or waste derived. A large fuel reception and storage area is part of the system which will allow us to store the client’s fuel. The plant is expected to be commissioned toward the end of 2016 and will be available for R&D purposes and client’s fuel trials by the beginning of 2017. Supported by a grant from ADEME (the French Agency for Environ- ment and Energy Management) this investment puts LLT on the fore- front of R&D for renewable technologies to reduce our reliability on fossil fuel.
