Innospection’s marinised riser and caisson inspection systems consist of both external and internal inspection tools. The MEC-MPS series of marinised scanners enables the non-intrusive condition assessment of rigid risers, caissons and structures including through the neoprene coating and Monel cladding.

The MEC-MPS marinised scanners are based on the fast corrosion mapping Magnetic Eddy Current (MEC) technique which is the next generation and further development of the SLOFEC technique. Combined with other inspection techniques such as Ultrasonic, Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) and built-in camera system, the MEC-MPS scanners provide a versatile and cost effective inspection solution for the offshore and subsea assets.

Due to the smaller size, the MEC-MPS scanners can be easily deployed by divers or rope access personnel. Adapted for both external and internal inspection, the MEC-MPS scanners have high defect detection capabilities for pitting, general corrosion, wall loss and cracks. They may also be equipped with advanced high pressure jetting cleaning heads for a simultaneous cleaning and inspection operation.

Riser and Caisson Inspection

The complex layer structure of the flexible risers corresponds to challenges in the integrity evaluation of these pipes, especially the different wire layers under various tensional stress levels.

There is a market demand for a technology able to deliver an external fast corrosion screening of the flexible risers in-situ with visibility of the multiple wire layers including those on the far side but without the risk of damaging the integrity through the annulus flooding with a couplant.

As a result, Innospection developed the patented MEC-FITTM flexible riser inspection technique to provide a reliable and technically advanced solution for the inspection of general risers and flexible risers operated from offshore installations.

The technique combines magnetic field lines with Eddy Current field lines to allow the deeper penetration into the various armour layers for defect detection in the inner layers. It also enables the optimisation of inspection for a specific layer from which a defect signal is received.

The key capabilities of MEC-FITTM are:

• Rapid external scanning with the ability to penetrate into the various armour wire layers of the flexible risers

• Detection of localised material defects such as cracks and corrosion (corrosion pitting areas or individual pits)

• Detection and analysis of general wall loss• No couplant or annulus flooding is required

for the inspection to be carried out due to the electromagnetic technique

Flexible Riser Inspection

Page 15: Innospection brochure

DD ImageProspekt 280811 28.08.2011 19:46 Uhr Seite 15 C M Y CM MY CY CMY K

The MEC-Hug Crawler is developed not only to deploy the MEC-FITTM inspection technique but also to address the very specific challenges of accessing and inspecting the flexible and rigid risers in its working locations. A sophisticated self-crawling inspection system, the MEC-Hug Crawler embraces the flexible risers after being deployed into position by ROV or rope access personnel and moves along the flexible risers through the splash zone to perform the external inspection.

The ability of this tool to crawl vertically or horizontally along the inspection assets provides greater flexibility in meeting the rigorous demands of the subsea inspections. A change out of the sensor system allows the MEC-Hug Crawler to be used for the of rigid risers and general pipes.

The signal data with encoded position details is transferred in real time via the umbilical to the inspection computer located on the support vessel or installation to provide instantaneous inspection results.

The MEC-Hug Crawler with the MEC-FITTM technique has been successfully deployed on flexible risers in the North Sea. The specifically developed magnetic system and sensors have demonstrated sensitivity in the detection of single or multiple wire cracks and corrosion in the first and second tensile armour layers and to some extent, damage and interlocking failures in the third pressure armour layer.

Subsea Structure and Pipeline Inspection

Innospection’s MEC-Combi Crawler is a sophisticated self-crawling inspection system developed to support the inspection and lifetime assessment of offshore and subsea assets such as risers, caisson, pipes, platform legs and flat surfaces like ship hulls.

The MEC-Combi PipeCrawler is a similar self-crawling inspection system and supports technically the inspection of smaller diameter subsea pipes, risers and caissons ranging from 6” to 18”.

Based on the fast corrosion mapping Magnetic Eddy Current (MEC) technique which is the next generation and further development of the SLOFEC technique, these inspection tools operate in combination with direct Ultrasonic wall thickness measurement to provide valuable data on the external and internal wall condition including the identification of localised defects and general wall loss.

Both inspection tools are versatile and enable the incorporation of supporting inspection techniques such as Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC), laser triangulation system and other advanced inspection techniques to provide comprehensive and high density inspection data within a single deployment.

The key features of the MEC-Combi Crawler / MEC-Combi PipeCrawler are:

• Capable of crawling up the structures or along the subsea pipelines due to the hydraulic powered drive unit and wheels• Capable of remaining in stable contact with the

inspection surface despite the turbulences and waves due to its integral buoyancy, hydraulic wheels and magnetic system

• Preparation of the inspection surface is less critical due to its electromagnetic technique

Page 17: Innospection brochure

DD ImageProspekt 280811 28.08.2011 19:46 Uhr Seite 17 C M Y CM MY CY CMY K

The key capabilities of the MEC-Combi Crawler / MEC-Combi PipeCrawler are:

• High defect detection sensitivity• High inspection speed of up to 10m/min• Ability to detect both external and internal

corrosion and defects• Ability to inspect at various subsea depths• Ability to inspect through surface coating, clad or

painting• Minimal surface preparation prior to inspection,

except for the removal of heavy marine growth

After deployment by ROV or divers from the support vessel or from the installation, the MEC-Combi Crawler moves on its own from through the splash zone into the subsea area to perform the inspection while the MEC-Combi PipeCrawler moves along the subsea pipeline to perform the scanning.

With Innospection’s comprehensive reporting software, the signal data with encoded position details is transferred in real time via the umbilical to the inspection computer located at the ROV control unit on the support vessel or on the installation to provide instantaneous inspection results.

The advanced colour condition mapping report provides analysis of the external and internal defects in term of size, severity of wall loss and locations of defects and other occurrences.
