In an ideal world ?

• We would have perfect biomechanics• We would train progressively and scientifically

and allow time to build up • We would have great nutrition and hydration• We would get adequate sleep and rest• We would train in a suitable environment• We would train at the best times of the days• We would use the best equipment

In the real world ?

• Our biomechanics are far from perfect• Our training can disorganised and adhoc and

last minute• We don’t have adequate nutrition/hydration• We don’t get enough sleep or rest• We train in an unsuitable environment• We train when we can• We don’t use the right equipment

Why do we get injured ?

• Trauma and overuse

• Trauma tends to be rare- factors that are implicated poor fitness, poor biomechanics sudden, increase in loads, adverse environments, poor equipment, fatigue and factors out with your control.

• Overuse much more common

Well can we prevent injury ?

• Deal with inadequate/abnormal biomechanics especially if they are causing you a problem

• Maintain strength and flexibility• Wear the right foot wear• Do train sensibly and progressively• Do cross train• Choose your environment• Get adequate rest/sleep• Get adequate nutrition/hydration

And if you become injured ?

• Do not train through injury• If injured apply PRICE principles• (Protect, rest, ice, compression and elevation)• Seek help and advice early• Comply with treatment and advice• Complete treatment and return to activity

progressively- remember soft tissue changes may go for up to a year following injury
