  • Ingress Protection Rating

    - Venkataraman S

  • Objective:

Used to rate the degree of protection against the intrusion/ingress of Solid particles and water in mechanical casings with electrical enclosures

    Standard:

    IEC EN 60529

  • Represnetation

IP XYWhere,X - Number ranging from 0-6 indicating the degree of protection against solid particles

Y - Number ranging from 0-8 indicating the degree of protection against water ingress

  • IP Code Decryptioni) Protection against solid particles (first numeral ranging from 0-6)

First numeralObject sizeProtection against0-No protection against solid particles1>50 mmAny large surface, such as back of the hand2>12.5 mmSmaller surfaces like fingers3>2.5 mmTools, thick wires etc.,4>1 mmInstruments leads, wires, screws etc.,5Dust protectionIngress of dust is not entirely prevented but ensures that the satisfactory operation of the equipment is not affected by the dust ingress6Dust tightComplete protection against ingress of dust

  • IP Code Decryptioni) Protection against water ingress (second numeral ranging from 0-8)

    Continued...

Second numeralProtection againstDescriptionTesting0No protection--1Dripping waterWater falling vertically in the equipment shall have no harmful effectTest duration: 10 minutes Volume: Water equivalent to 1mm rainfall per minute2Dripping water tilted by 15 degWater falling vertically with equipment tilted upto 15o shall have no harmful effectsTest duration: 10 minutes Volume: Water equivalent to 3mm rainfall per minute3Spraying waterWater sprayed in the equipment upto an angle of 60o from the vertical shall have no harmful effectTest duration: 5 minutes Volume: 0.7 litre per minute Pressure: 80-100kPa4Splashing of waterWater splashing in the equipment from any direction shall have no harmful effectTest duration: 5 minutes Volume: 10 litre per minute Pressure: 80-100kPa

  • Second numeralProtection againstDescriptionTesting5Water jetsWater projected by a nozzle (6.3mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effectsTest duration: atleast 3 minutes Volume: 12.5 litres per minute Pressure: 30 kPa at distance of 3m6Powerful water jetsWater projected by a nozzle in powerful jets (12.5 mmnozzle) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effectsTest duration: atleast 3 minutes Volume: 100 litres per minute Pressure: 100 kPa at distance of 3m7Immersion upto 1mIngress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the equipment is immersed in water upto a depth of 1m under defined conditions Test duration: 30 minutes immersion at a depth of 1m measured from bottom of equipment or atleast 15cm from yop of device. Pressure: 100 kPa at distance of 3m8Immersion beyond 1mEquipment is suitable for continuos immersion in water beyond 1m under specified conditions defined by manufacturerTest duration: Continuos immersion in water at a depth specified by manufactureer
